Dzahn added a comment. @bking @Gehel Meanwhile we have duplicate both monitoring checks. So for query.wikidata.org and commons-query.wikimedia.org there is one check that notifies collaboration-services and one that notifies search-platform. Given this each team can change their own notification methods or how detailed the check is (content check vs just checking if the proxy is up etc) as they see fit. Now unless WMDE also wants to be notified by email or something.. I think we can call this resolved. I think I also misunderstood this ticket at first but we chatted on IRC now. So.. if you really want this removed from the miscweb* backends and everything about it is gone from wdqs* machines.. it's ok to simply assign this to me. Dzahn added a comment. We can confirm we served a lot of 5xx's in a time span from about 21:00 to 21:05 UTC yesterday. The reason was an overloaded database, db1143, in the s4 cluster, which is commons. The fix was that DBAs depooled that database temporarily. If you simply want to point out that a certain team isn't going to work on it soon there are other options such as setting to 'stalled' or lowering priority to lowest. Dzahn added a comment. As of right now both wcqs1002 and wcqs2001 seem to be running normal, blazegraph is active and all Icinga checks are green/OK. It's not obvious what the issue was but it seems gone now. re: "various NRPE timeouts" these happen when the nagios-nrpe-server service dies. An issue we have seen repeatedly on other hosts was: host runs out of memory for whatever reason, OOM-killer picks nagios-nrpe-server process as the victim, all the Icinga standard checks for this host that are executed on the host via NRPE start failing (check_disk, check_cpu and so on), someone restarts nagios-nrpe-server, everything recovers. So maybe it was that here as well? (unhandled CRIT since about 18 hours, does it have notifications?) I did a `systemctl restart wdqs-blazegraph` and that caused: RECOVERY - Query Service HTTP Port on wdqs1004 is OK: HTTP OK: HTTP/1.1 200 OK but in turn also a new: <+icinga-wm> PROBLEM - WDQS high update lag on wdqs1004 is CRITICAL: 1.224e+05 ge https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata_query_service/Runbook%23Update_lag told me to also restart the `wdqs-updater` service, so I did that. When that did not seem to immediately resolve it I also depooled the server as the docs above say to do until it catches up. Reusing this ticket. That file has tests to check if all the existing microsites on miscweb* work but now that WDQS UI is on it that is missing from the tests to have complete coverage. While we are generally interested in moving all static sites at some point in the future we are not there yet at the current time, primarily because we don't have an ingress yet. Until that has changed we would like to offer a the following fix in the meantime: wikidata-query-service UI / query builder move to the current setup for microsites. They are hosted on miscweb* servers alongside other existing microsites. We would add puppet code needed for that and puppet would pull content from deployment repos on Gerrit, like we do it with other microsites. Once setup, some people would then get +2 on the deploy repo and it would also solve the requirement that you can deploy content by yourself without having to wait for other teams while needing a lot less engineering effort. Regarding CDN cache purging the same would apply that does for varnish/ATS on wiki sites. (https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Apache_Traffic_Server#Forcing_a_cache_miss_(similar_to_ban) if really needed though almost never needed for microsites). It is also possible to configure a specific site as just "passthrough" without actual caching. I would be happy to setup the puppet part for you. In the future we would then revisit this to move all static sites at once. We do have backups of mailman archives in the current setup and have had them
since a long time. list servers include "profile::backup::host and the lists
role tells it to backup "backup::set { 'var-lib-mailman': }". Whether specific
databases are backed up should be verified with DBA team.

Looks like Herron already answered the part about the total size it currently has. If there is a migration and it turns out we actually have to reduce the size .. i guess we could just skip copying/migrating some selected archives instead of actively deleting stuff on the old instance now. The people receiving wikidata-bugs-ow...@lists.wikimedia.org can just do this as they see fit. You don't need Operations/SRE for that. Deletion of archives is normally only done if there are legal reasons for it and the server is not about to run out of disk anytime soon. Dzahn added a comment. @dcausse As John pointed out on Gerrit the (only) java process running on wdqs machines is running as the blazegraph user and wdqs-admins already can run any commands as the user blazegraph. So this works for me: `sudo -u blazegraph jstack 46484` where 46484 is one of the java processes. Does that work for you? But nn both cases HTTPS can be fixed, which this ticket is about. Also the plan from @Addshore sounds about right to me at this point. It's an important notion that one name is canonical! Yes, that's kind of why i wanted to mention it now. It seems to me it's "now or never" to make a choice for or against wikibase.org. It also seemed like quite an interesting timing that we got wikibase.org right now while we (never?) had it in the past. My personal opinion is that an .org domain is better and more consistent with our other domains instead of using the TLD of Sweden just to get a shorter name. But of course i also realize it's already an existing project and cool URIs don't change and that it would complicate things.
