Manuel added a comment. About the missing revision history: - Did I understand correctly that we do not have any kind of complete edit history for Wikidata on the data lake? If so, we will need to find a solution for this, as my assumption is that we will need this kind of information for other use cases as well. What you found out about potential solutions will be helpful. Still, if this needs to be implemented new in any case, the first step should be finding out what exactly we need. Could you create a separate task for this project? - It would help to understand what options this currently leaves us to access historic revisions: To my knowledge, the dumps for Wikidata stopped including a complete page history at some point. Does this leave us with only the live API and MariaDB? This confirms what I mentioned already, @AndrewTavis_WMDE: For a similar metric our legacy systems were set up to re-compute the entire history with each new snapshot. This would be the easiest solution in this case as well. To save computing resources, we could also use the newest snapshots only to add the most recent new data points. As a result, the historic data (where no snapshots are available anymore) would follow a slightly different definition, but this seems ok here for now. There seem to be gaps in the data and there is a chance that the quantities represented in the graphs may also be higher in reality. The other way around is very unlikely considering how Graphite works. For the same reason missing historic data will likely stay missing. New data to fill empty graphs on the board will only be available if the team decides to fix them. The status quo was already ungrammatical, so we are at least not making it worse. I am not sure if this could be solved via a general formulation that works for all cases, especially considering translations in all languages. So changing the formulation just for 'mul' as a special case sounds like a better option. TASK DESCRIPTION
As a Wiktionary user, I want to know what are the most common words
("entries") that are missing from a specific Wiktionary project.
Scope
-
- Identify the original CSV for the "I miss you ..." table in
https://analytics.wikimedia.org/published/datasets/wmde-analytics-engineering/Wiktionary/
- (Re)create a data process that generates the table daily (daily for now so
that we can evaluate the resource investment and usage)
- Some entries need to be filtered out ("Main_Page" and "main_Page")
Context
---
**Wiktionaries** describe words coming from their own languages as well as
other languages. Pages on Wiktionaries are called "entries". Example: en:tree
<https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pain>.
The **Cognate extension** provides automatic links between two pages of
different language versions of Wiktionary that have the same title (including a
few normalization rules). So for example, fr:tree
<https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/tree> and en:tree
<https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/tree>. These links then show up as automatic
interwikilinks.
There was also a **Wiktionary Cognate dashboard** that helped the community
analyze the data of the extension.
This community tool included an **"I miss you..." table/dashboard**.
- The users could select a particular Wiktionary from a drop-down menu. A
table then showed a table encompassing the top 1,000 enties (page titles) found
in other Wiktionaries that are absent from the selected project.
- The idea was to give to the editors of a language version, some ideas on
what new pages to create on their home wiki. So, if someone is editing French
Wiktionary, they would be interested in the words (whatever the language), that
already have a page on many other Wiktionaries, but not the French one. That's
probably the most interesting/useful pages to create. That's why users want a
list of the entries that already exist in a lot of languages, but not theirs.

I had just looked this up in German myself, after I realized that the differentiation between "default" and "fallback" in English may not be as clear cut in other languages. I wanted to understand better what your point was and therefore tried to make things clearer and avoid misunderstandings. In any case this is unfortunately something that we will have to consider when the copy this gets translated. DL;DR: No veto from UX, so we are good for the initial release from my side.

What do you mean with "it might not be aligned with the use case or the
users' intention"? Maybe we have a different understanding of what a default
is? The dictionary <https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/default> says
that in the software context it's "a selection automatically used by a program
in the absence of a choice made by the user" (see here
<https://www.reddit.com/r/learnspanish/comments/pvrwqv/is_por_defecto_the_best_way_to_translate_default/>
for Spanish). So it should mean that the value specified is used for all
languages that don't have a dedicated value specified. If users are setting a
"default value for all languages" it is important that their intention aligns
with this meaning.

My original intention was to mention the language code ("mul") to create a
bridge for the API users. After the user tests I realized that this was not a
good idea. Not referencing "multiple languages" is a plus from my side, as it
does not explain to users what this does.

I asked most people that worked on this feature (in the team, department, and
community) about this and there were no strong opinions in any direction, so
personally, I have no need for additional input on this from the team. I will
however have an open ear about what the wider community says about this after
we switch it on. If you want to ask additional people before that, it is
important to thoroughly explain them the context, otherwise the feedback will
not be valuable.

Do we know that? We only tested "default values (mul)" as far as I remember.

In any case we seem aligned that this is the less optimal solution of the
two, so I'll go with that for the initial release.

Manuel added a comment. I think "default values for all languages" is more correct, as the values are used as the defaults for all languages, not just some/multiple. If you would veto this from the UX perspective because of the long copy, then "default values" would be the other feasible (but likely less self explanatory) option.
