Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] The upcoming couple of weeks

2017-12-04 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

As Lily mentioned we started the WLM Instagram account a little over a
month ago and so far the growth has been steady. I have posted all photos
that are posted on the winners page
. I'm
looking forward to building a strong base for our next year's competition
and I have specific plans that I will share with you in the future. But
until then please make sure to follow our account if you are on Instagram
and also spread the word to your local audience. Please encourage people to
tag us and mention us in their Instagram posts. That way we will get a lot
of visibility. Based on my experience with WLM Iran account, I'm hopeful we
can get a lot of engagement from WLM Instagram account. Many local chapters
are active on Instagram and I believe I have found more than 40
Wikipedia/Wikimedia related accounts. My hope is that next year many more
local teams use Instagram so we can build a strong network of accounts that
can help promote each other. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out
if you have ideas to improve our presence on social media and in
particular, Instagram.

Also I will be posting all winning photos one by one on the Instagram
account. Please feel free to share the posts on your own social media
channels.

Thanks,
Mohammad

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Featuring National Winners on WLM Social Media

2018-05-02 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

A while ago I wrote to you about our social media campaign that we run
throughout the year with hashtag #MonumentaStories. In this campaign
we highlight national winners and ask the photographer to share with
us a story about the photo (the setting, the place, the mood, anything
interesting). To ensure diversity in this campaign, I've personally
reached out to winners from many countries. So far, we've published 30
stories from 30 different countries but despite all my efforts some
countries are still missing. It might be due to language barrier but
in any case, I want to ask local organizers for their help in
highlighting photos from their own countries.

A brief and non-comprehensive list of missing countries: Germany,
Thailand, Taiwan, Croatia, Venezuela, Brazil, UK, Palestine, Austria,
Belgium, Malaysia, Netherlands, Georgia, Armenia.

I'm also thinking of starting a second round and include countries
that are already covered for a second time. So even if your country is
represented I'd appreciate if you help me get another story. It should
be easier for local organizers to reach out to winners. Note that the
photo doesn't have to be from this year.

If you can help please reach out to the winners, get a story from them
and send it to me or put them in touch with me so I can continue the
conversation with them.

Thanks,
Mohammad

[Wiki Loves Monuments] "Monumental Stories" on WLM Social Media

2018-01-19 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

The international team is running a campaign on WLM Instagram and Facebook
accounts called "Monumental Stories." This campaign is an effort to
highlight winning photos at national level that didn't make it to the top
25 of the international competition.

We have reached out to a number of our national winners and asked them to
share with us a story about their photo. The stories we've posted so far
are very diverse, some are very personal and touching, some are quite
informative. You can check out some of them on our Instagram and Facebook
accounts:
https://www.instagram.com/wikilovesmonuments/
https://www.facebook.com/WikiLovesMonuments/

So far 11 countries have been featured with 6 more ready to be posted but
of course we'd like to highlight photos from all participating countries in
2017 or past years and we also welcome more stories from the ones already
featured. The main difficulty so far has been the language barrier. We are
looking for help from local teams in collecting these stories in local
language and then translating them to English for us. If you would like
your country to be featured in this campaign and can help please contact me
and I will send you more details on what exactly we need.

Also any help in advertising for this campaign is appreciated. If you have
Instagram/Facebook accounts you can share or re-post our stories or you can
encourage your followers in Twitter to check out our stories.

Thanks,
Mohammad

[Wiki Loves Monuments] WLM 2018 Poster

2018-07-29 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

We've put together a poster for 2018 competition:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_2018_Poster.pdf

The list of national competitions participating in this year's competition
is included at the bottom of the poster. The list is based on:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_2018_Poster.pdf

As of now, 43 national competitions have signed up for this year's WLM. The
poster will be updated weekly to add new national competitions that join
after today (if any). If you are planning to sign up and haven't yet please
do so as soon as possible so we can include your competition in our
promotional activities.

Thanks,
Mohammad

which will be more suitable for sharing on social media. It is available in
PDF and PNG formats and in blue and red colors:

Thank you all for your interest in the poster. The design is in Pages which
does not export to SVG. I will need to look into ways to create the SVG
version but that may take a few days. If someone has experience with that
I'd really appreciate if they reach out to me.

In the meantime, I can offer to make the localized version for those who
want the use the poster in their local language. Please send me a massage

the poster and how you want to replace the text and I will modify the
poster for you.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Social Media Activity for WLM 2018

2018-08-29 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

The international team will be active on social media (Instagram, Facebook
and Twitter) throughout the month of September to promote WLM and to reach
out to a wider audience.

If your local campaign is planning to use social media please go to the
following page and fill out the details so we can coordinate with you:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Social_Media
Please make sure to add a contact person we can reach out to for
coordination. The contact person does not need to be the same as the people
running the accounts but someone (e.g., from the local team) who has access
to the people managing the accounts. This page also helps us decide where
to focus our efforts.

Also, when posting on social media please make sure to tag us
(@wikilovesmonuments in FB and IG and @wikimonuments in Twitter) to make
sure we see your post.

Thanks,
Mohammad

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Social Media Tips to Increase WLM Participation

2018-09-08 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

My apologies for the long email but there are important tips that can help
you with promoting your campaign on social media so please bear with me :)

The international team has been promoting the contest on its social media
accounts (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). We do our best to reach out to
as many people as possible, but in many cases, due to language barrier, it's
much more effective to do promotion in the local language. Here are some
tips to help you promote your campaign on social media:

   1. Make use of WLM stats page by
Emilio. It's a wonderful tool to keep track of your local contest. You can
see the total number of uploads, number of users, and the daily breakdown.
It also shows where you stand in comparison to other national campaigns.
   2. Stay active throughout the month of September. In addition to making
posts make sure to like relevant posts and encourage those who are
potential participants by commenting under their posts/photos.
   3. Use Facebook and Instagram stories to keep your audience engaged. If
you have a large follower base, consider running a live event (e.g.,
Instagram Live) for your audience to go live and ask questions.
   4. It's hard to constantly generate content. There are some easy ways
that will help you make a post without too much work. The best way is to
share someone else's story or post. One easy trick is again the stats.
Everyday the international team shares the stats in a story. For example,
today we posted "so far we've got >45000 photos by >3200 uploaders from 53
countries." This is a good way of keeping the excitement alive.
   5. Be proactive! If you see a profile on social media with monument
photos invite them to share their photos through WLM. This is perhaps one
of the most effective ways. Typically, I leave a comment like this: "Great
pics of cultural heritage. Please consider sharing your photos on Wikipedia
through Wiki Loves Monuments photography competition. It runs through Sep.
30 with the goal of visual documentation of monuments on Wikipedia." This
encourages people to join and puts all the keywords (monument, Wikipedia
   ...) in a short message.
   6. It's all about word of mouth so ask your followers/friends to be your
ambassadors and encourage others to join. Previous years' participants are
typically excellent candidates to help with promotion.
   7. If you have access to people with large accounts ask them to tell
their followers about WLM. This, if done correctly, can help a lot. When
Wikipedia account on Instagram started following us and told about us to
their followers we immediately got many new followers.
   8. Consider paid promotions on social media. They are cheap and they can
reach to a very large number of people. But make sure to make it targeted.
If you need help contact me.
   9. Make sure to update your information on this page:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018/Social_Media
so we keep you in mind when promoting WLM on our social media

Finally I would like to thank all our local organizers. You are all doing a
great job and it's so exciting to see so many beautiful monument images
from all over the world. Keep up the good work!

Thanks,
Mohammad

Thank you all for your feedback.

Suyash, I added Hindi in 2 places.

Saqib, I saw the same thing as Lily. I understand your point and changed
the text to the one you'd sent.

Johnattan, thanks for pointing out the grammatical mistake. I had the
Spanish translation but "a" was missing in it.

I uploaded a new version of the design at:

Also if you are a national organizer who has submitted the nominations to
Erina but hasn't posted them on the commons page please do so as soon as
possible (unless you are holding off because of a ceremony or other
reasons) As of now we only have 28 of national winners posted:

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Last week of WLM 2018

2018-09-24 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

We have officially entered the last week of this year's competition (for
most nations). Things look great thanks to the efforts by all organizers!
In the past couple of days submissions have picked up significantly.
Yesterday was the best day so far with almost 10,000 submissions. One more
week and it's time for the last push.

We have started a countdown on our social media outlets, where we make
daily posts until the last day:
https://www.instagram.com/wikilovesmonuments/
https://www.facebook.com/WikiLovesMonuments
https://twitter.com/wikimonuments
Feel free to share our posts on your own social media. If you need
localized versions contact me and I can send you the original files or
modify them for you.

Make sure to keep an eye on the stats tools we have:
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/monuments/2018
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wlm-stats/
In particular, in the 2nd one when you click on details you can get
information on the uploaders and uploads per day. Sometimes it's useful to
check out the uploaders and encourage them to upload more :) Also make sure
you tell your previous winners to participate they have been through the
process so they are already familiar with the steps and the procedure.

Also ask others for help in outreach. If there are social media accounts
with large number of followers ask them to mention WLM in their accounts
and encourage their followers to participate. Just be creative and try to
expand your reach through other people's network.

Finally, feel free to reach out to me if I can be of any help.

Go Wiki Loves Monuments!

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Social Media Tips to Increase WLM Participation (Part 2)

2018-09-18 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

We are more than halfway through this year's competition. So far we have
had more than 100,000 photos. Kudos to all local organizers for the amazing
job they are doing. As we get close to the end of WLM 2018 submission
period you may want to consider another push on your social media. I
thought I'd add a few more tips to those in my previous email.

   1. Consider switching to a business profile on Instagram. It allows you
to look at stats and performance of each post and the overall audience of
your account. It's free and contrary to what the name suggests won't make
you look like a business. You can select the category to be: Community
   Organization
   2. If you are present on both Facebook and Instagram it would be helpful
to link them to each other. Given that Facebook owns Instagram, they have
made the connection pretty straightforward and you can do it from either
platform. It makes it easy for your Instagram posts to automatically show
up on Facebook. Instagram stories can be shared on Facebook stories as
well. Also if you consider paid promotions, linking the two will give you
one unified access to ads in both.
   3. If you'd like to share your FB and IG posts on Twitter you can use IFTTT
service. We use it with the international account,
therefore, our posts on Instagram automatically show up on Twitter as well.
It has some limitations (e.g., for posts with multiple images) but overall
   it's quite useful.
   4. If there is a specific monument that you want to have a photo of, you
can easily find people who have photos of that monument on social media.
Say you want photos of Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani in Tanzania. If you search
#KilwaKisiwani on Instagram you will find 280 photos with this tag. Some of
them look good for Wikipedia. You can then just leave a comment or send a
message to the photographer and ask them to submit the photo through WLM.
This works particularly well with countries that have a short list of
monuments or the newcomers to WLM who don't have a large follower base.
   5. You might have noticed that we posted a promotional clip on our
social media. I have uploaded the file on Commons
   . If you
would like to make one in your local language you can access the PowerPoint
   presentation
out of which this clip is made. We are working on an Arabic version of the
clip, which will hopefully become available in a few days. If you need any
other language or want to change anything for your own competition, feel
free to modify it in any way you like. Just make sure when you post it you
credit the music (Music: Royalty-free music by bensound.com) Once you
are done editing just go to file>Export>Create a Video. It should
automatically take care of transitions between slides and the music and
generate an MP4 file that you can post..

On the international account we try to promote local accounts. If we have
missed you or you feel you'd want us to mention you more frequently, please
send an email to wikilovesmonuments.in...@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Mohammad

Hi Jernej,

We have some promotional material from previous years. You can see our
social media feed for examples (promo clip, poster, countdown, etc.):
https://www.instagram.com/wikilovesmonuments/

1. 2018 poster in square form factor for social media:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_2018_Poster_sq_en.png
(It's available in English, Arabic, Spanish and Farsi. I can make one for
you if you send me the right text and also change the dates) I can also
send you the original file (in Pages)

2. Promo clip: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_Promo_4_5.webm
and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WLM_Promo_Arabic_ver1.webm
This is available both in English and Arabic. It's a powerpoint
presentation that I convert to a slideshow.

3. Countdown like this one are
again powerpoint files that I can share with you.

Also if you have social media accounts please send me the links so we can
promote them on our own social media channels.

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Social Media Tips to Increase WLM Participation

2019-09-05 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

We are only 5 days into WLM 2019 and so far it's been amazing! More than
28000 photos already! Kudos to all local organizers!

The international team has been promoting the contest on its social
media accounts
(Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). We do our best to reach out to as many
people as possible, but in many cases, due to language barrier, it's much
more effective to do promotion in the local language. We've noticed
increased activity on social media by national competitions and we
certainly hope this momentum carries over until the end of the contest.

Here are some tips to help you promote your campaign on social media:

   1. Link all your social media to each other so when you post on one, it
automatically shows up on the other ones. Linking Facebook and Instagram
accounts is pretty straightforward and you can do it from either platform.
Instagram stories can be shared on Facebook stories as well. If you'd like
to share your FB and IG posts on Twitter you can use IFTTT
service. It has some limitations (e.g., for posts
with multiple images) but overall it's quite useful.
   2. Make use of WLM stats page
   . It's a wonderful
tool to keep track of your local contest. You can see the total number of
uploads, number of users, and the daily breakdown. It also shows where you
stand in comparison to other national campaigns.
   3. Stay active throughout the month of September. In addition to making
posts make sure to like relevant posts and encourage those who are
potential participants by commenting under their posts/photos.
   4. Use Facebook and Instagram stories to keep your audience engaged. If
you have a large follower base, consider running a live event (e.g.,
Instagram Live) for your audience to go live and ask questions.
   5. It's hard to constantly generate content. There are some easy ways
that will help you make a post without too much work. The best way is to
share someone else's story or post. One easy trick is again the stats.
Everyday the international team shares the stats in a story. For example,
today we posted "25882 photos so far and so far and counting, Ukraine 4156,
Italy 3244 ..." This is a good way of keeping the excitement alive.
It runs through
Sep. 30 with the goal of visual documentation of monuments on
Wikipedia." This encourages people to join and puts all the keywords
(monument, Wikipedia ...) in a short message.
   7. It's all about word of mouth so ask your followers/friends to be your
ambassadors and encourage others to join. Previous years' participants are
typically excellent candidates to help with promotion.
   8. If you have access to people with large accounts ask them to tell
their followers about WLM. This, if done correctly, can help a lot. When
Wikipedia account on Instagram started following us and told about us to
their followers we immediately got many new followers.
   9. Make sure to update your information on this page:
   https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki
   /Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019/Social_Media

so
we keep you in mind when promoting WLM on our social media
   10. Consider switching to a business profile on Instagram. It allows you
to look at stats and performance of each post and the overall audience of
your account. It's free and contrary to what the name suggests won't make
you look like a business. You can select the category to be: Community
   Organization
   11. If there is a specific monument that you want to have a photo of,
you can easily find people who have photos of that monument on social
media. Let's say you want photos of Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani in Tanzania.
If you search #KilwaKisiwani on Instagram you will find 280 photos with
this tag. Some of them look good for Wikipedia. You can then just leave a
comment or send a message to the photographer and ask them to submit the
photo through WLM. This works particularly well with countries that have a
short list of monuments or the newcomers to WLM who don't have a large
   follower base.

If we have missed you or you feel you'd want us to mention you more
frequently, please send an email to wikilovesmonuments.in...@gmail.com.

Thanks and good luck,
Mohammad

Also please remember to post your winners on this page:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2019_winners
This is in addition to submitting your nominations to Erina. We understand
some national competitions follow certain timeline for announcing their
winners or may choose to announce them later in a special ceremony but
please make sure to post your winner on this page once you've publicly
announced them. When posting please make sure to include a brief
description in English (see Azerbaijan for an example).

Thanks,
Mohammad

[Wiki Loves Monuments] Announcement of WLM International Winners

2020-01-12 Thread Mohammad Hekmat
Hi all,

We are getting ready to announce the winners of this year's international
competition. As usual, in addition to the top 15, we will announce ranks
16-25 as honorable mentions.

The announcements will begin on Jan 14, 12am (GMT). Every half an hour we
will reveal one photo starting from rank 25 and working backwards. Once
ranks 16-25 are announced we will wait for another 3.5 hours and then start
the top 15 winners. The top winner will be announced at 3pm GMT.

Please follow the announcement on our social media
[1] https://twitter.com/wikimonuments
[2] https://www.instagram.com/wikilovesmonuments/
[3] https://www.facebook.com/WikiLovesMonuments/
Please help us spread the word about the winners and competition by sharing
them through your social media, news outlets and local news if you have
access.

WMF will also publish a post on this year's competition once the top winner
is announced.

This year was another incredible year for WLM and we are very excited about
the big announcement.

Thanks,
Mohammad
