[Wikimania-l] Program-session chairs, room moderators, and general session helper for Wikimania

2010-07-06 Thread Samuel Klein
Dear Wikimaniacs,

I hope you have all had a chance to look at the final program by now.
Three long days, but lots of amazing space to hang out and relax on
your own; of course noone is obliged to spend their conference time in
sessions ;-) We will have all the riverside seating and walkways
around the venue, and aside from an interlude in which a wedding party
is using the upstairs restaurant at our venue -- which should be fun
-- we will have full use of the Philharmonic during Wikimania.

We need another dozen or so volunteers to help with the sessions: we
are looking for room moderators (needed to moderate one room for at
least half a day), session chairs (helping disparate ideas and talks
integrate into a coherent discussion in the room), and general
room-helpers: people who can assist with technical issues that may
affect speakers and videographers, and help with crowd control and
cleanup.

If you are interested in any of these things, please leave a note on
the talk page of the main program, or let our program chair Jacek
Jankowski know.

More notes will be out shortly about where to start discussing your
own sessions -- every session will have its own talk page on the
maniawiki.

Thank you :-)

[Wikimania-l] Wi-fi at Dom (sic)

2010-07-06 Thread Aphaia
Hi,

now I'm sitting on bed along a chest besides my bed, since the line is
too short for me to work on the desk and
it's quite annoying in particular for me who need to make talks from right now.

While I'm happy to have a connection - it's really great - if I can
work on the desk and a stable chair,
not comfortable for lying but not for sitting because it's way soft
and unstable for sitting for hours -
it's triple-hyper-super-more than great. Really.

So back to the subject: is there wi-fi connection is or will be
available at Doms? Doms I'd say, because
there are two doms (both are quite near btw) and I guess everyone
lodging at dorms would love to know that.

A digression but another interest of many people still: are there two
and only two dorms for maniacs?
If so, many people will just be able to come to the Music Academy and
pay a visit to two dorms (Dom Sonata
and Dom Muzika) just in a few minutes, instead of trekking with
luggage from the Philharmonic.

Witam!

I'm current in Dom Sonata on Wi-Fi. I don't know where it is coming
from. The SSID is SK and it is a fairly weak signal, but it's working
fine. No log-on was required.

Hi Takashi and all,
It is a little confusing, but...
The Dom Sonata is the dorm at the Dom Muzyka complex. It is all the same
thing (there is also a hotel, school, and conference venue at the same
place). If you tell the cab driver dom muzyka they will get you there,
then you want to look for the awning with dom sonata printed on it.

Hi

BTW, according to http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org/wiki/Venue ,

| Most of the area of the old City in Gdańsk is covered by a public
free wifi with a many additional
| hot spots being provided in cafes, restaurants and shopping areas.
Additional wifi infrastructure
| will need to be implemented by the Wikimania team. Ołowianka island
will be supplied with a
| 100-megabit optic fibre connection, provided by TASK, Tricity's
academic network operator.
| Currently the city authorities have covered much of the the Old Town
with 2 Mb/s free wireless
| Internet access[1], hosted from 8am to 10pm during the high season.
As of 2008 tourist season
| the western part of the Ołowianka island, where the conference will
be held, was not yet in
| range of the wifi network.

Has anybody tried to do that? If it's available between the venue and my dorm,
it really helps...

Re: [Wikimania-l] Directions from Gdansk airport to your dormitory

2010-07-06 Thread Jodi Schneider
Everything you say agrees with my experience, Maysara, except I bought
a 3 zl ticket on the bus and then validated it.

Many of us are in the Dom Muzyka complex (WikiSym venue, hotel and
music school dorms).

** Also, (per Phoebe) please note: for anyone relying on the in your
pocket Gdansk map -- the location of the Dom Muzyka on this map is
INCORRECT. The Dom M. is at the corner of Lakowa and the highway. See
Google Map http://tinyurl.com/32ezc38 -- or, after walking through the
long street walk over the bridge (take Stągiewna then turn right onto
Lakowa). More than a 15-20 min walk from the train station for me, but
there are lots of lovely distractions on the way.

On Tue, Jul 6, 2010 at 7:59 AM, Maysara Omar maysara.o...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hello everyone,

It's obvious that no one yet knows “where exactly” to go once in Gdansk.
Most probably this information will be communicated to us soon. There is a
number of dormitories in which we will be lodged according to some
arrangement that we yet don't know. In any case, because some of us have
already arrived in Gdansk, some others are about to be there, these are the
directions available from the airport to the city according to the many info
that was provided in the list so far.

Once in the airport you can:

1)exchange Euro to PLN [1€ = 4.1 Zloty (zl)]. Try to obtain change for the
 bus fare.
2)buy bus 210B tickets (4.20 zl) from the Gdańsk Tourist Organisation
Information desk in the terminal building on the ground floor opposite the
 check-in desks.
3)take bus 210B to the main Gdańsk Główny train station. Then head by walk
for your destination (when you know the address finally!). The station is
probably 10 to 15 mins walk from most dormitories. So consider if you can do
it with your luggage or not.
4)Another bus called “Airport bus” (10 zl) moves from the airport in the
 following times: 09:50, 10:50, 11:50, 13:10, 14:45, 16:05, 18:25, 19:50.
tickets can be purchased direct from the driver (euros accepted). Catch it
from the bus stop to the right of the terminal building, and find your
journey terminating outside the Hevelius Hotel, which is very close to the
Gdańsk Główny train station. You will still have to walk to your
 destination.
5)You can take a taxi (45 to 55 zl, City Plus Neptun, with the following
number printed on them: 19686) directly to your destination. There are
warnings about other types of taxis which could be more expensive, so avoid
 these.

Probably you can still take a taxi from Gdańsk Główny train station to your
dormitory if it is too far or if you have too much luggage and can't walk.
Departure times for the 210B bus from the airport can be found here:
 http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=ensl=pltl=enu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ztm.gda.pl%2Frozklady%2Frozklad-210-11-1.html
I'm not sure of any of these info since i haven't yet arrived in Gdansk. But
it will be useful if someone can authenticate the info. or at least point
out if there is any mistake.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip everyone :)
