[Wikimedia-l] Qrpedia domain transfer
Dear all, In January it was announced that Wikimedia UK had reached an agreement with Roger Bamkin and Terence Eden to accept the donation of the intellectual property rights of QRpedia to Wikimedia UK. WMUK are choosing to do this via a company called Cultural Outreach limited. This will mean that in future the site qrpedia.org will be managed by Cultural Outreach Ltd and governed by the Wikimedia UK Website Privacy Policy. Both the domains qrpedia.org and qrwp.org were transferred to the registrar maintained by Cultural Outreach Ltd as of today. This is a notice that the server hosting for the sites will be changed at 22:00 on Sunday 22nd December. Users should not notice any difference, however there is the very slight chance that in some cases QR codes may not work for short periods during the switch. If you experience a problem you can report it by emailing t...@wikimedia.org.uk or by logging a bug at the Wikimedia UK install of bugzilla (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org.uk/) *Katherine Bavage * *Wikimedia UK* +44 20 7065 0752 Wikimedia UK is a Company Limited by Guarantee registered in England and Wales, Registered No. 6741827. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Qrpedia domain transfer
Thanks Katherine, I just have a couple of questions if you have a moment... 1) Why did WMUK choose to incorporate a new company to host the qrpedia IP? 2) Who are the officers / trustees of Cultural Outreach Ltd and how are they chosen? 3) Are there already or will there need to be cross agreements between WMF and other Wikimedia entities and Cultural Outreach Ltd? Thanks, Nathan ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe
[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: [GLAM-US] Position: Wikipedia Affiliate, Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media
Hi all - George Mason University just posted a one year position for a remote Wikipedia Affiliate. It's unpaid, but that's not the point: if selected, you'll have full access to GMU's library resources, including access (via proxy) to their electronic journals. There's a huge amount of important content that currently only exists behind paywalled journals. If you write frequently in a field where you find your ability to write restricted by your lack of access to sources, I would highly encourage you to apply for this. It's worth noting that, besides for improving twenty five articles of historical significance and giving a brief talk about how you used your access at the end of the year, there is pretty much no further 'work' associated with the position. After I lost my student access to journals, I lucked in to a not dissimilar arrangement with another major research university, and it's been absolutely invaluable - there are things I couldn't possibly write about without access to paywalled journals. For those of you working in libraries (or anyone wanting to attend!) we are having a meeting at the American Libraries Association midwinter meeting in Philadelphia (Saturday January 25th). We have a number of academic libraries who are interested in supporting Wikipedians in this novel way. Hopefully a lot more to report in the new year! The position is designed to give research library access to a Wikipedia editor who does not currently have such access or who has only limited access to scholarly resources: the purpose of the position is to help improve Wikipedia's reliability and accuracy by providing Wikipedia editors with access to the best scholarly information resources while providing a model for other universities to do likewise. Qualifications The affiliate will be an experienced Wikipedia editor with at least one year of regular activity contributing to Wikipedia on historical topics in any field, region, or period. The affiliate will also be a thorough researcher who is committed to improving Wikipedia articles by consulting and citing reliable, scholarly sources and who is a lucid writer of text for Wikipedia encyclopedia articles on historical topics. An undergraduate or graduate degree in History, Art History, or a related discipline is desirable but not required. Position Description and Duties During the affiliate year, the affiliate will conduct scholarly research using the library resources of George Mason University with the aim of significantly improving the accuracy and reliability of at least 25 Wikipedia articles on historical topics, preferably articles within a particular historical scope (for example: modern Russian and Soviet history, U.S. Civil War history, the history of late imperial China). Near the end of the affiliate year, the affiliate will write a brief report listing the Wikipedia articles he or she has contributed to and improved over the course of the year, describing how his or her access to GMU library resources has helped increase the reliability of Wikipedia on this topic and analyzing whether the affiliate program could serve as a model for other universities. The affiliate will also be asked to give a brief talk on the same subject to

[Wikimedia-l] The Old Wikipedia logo is still widely used - what can we do?
Hallo. The old version of the puzzle globe Wikipedia logo was retired in 2010. It had wrongly painted letters in several languages as well as some graphical imperfections. The current logo has correct letters and improved vector graphics quality. Despite the replacement having taken place almost four years ago, I still see the old logo in news stories about Wikipedia in many languages every few days. I find it very frustrating. One likely reason for this is that Google images search shows mostly images of the old logo when queried for wikipedia logo. Can we do anything about it? My SEO skills are about non-existent. A Facebook friend suggested changing the title of the Commons file File:Wikipedia-logo.png to File:Wikipedia-logo-v1.png and File:Wikipedia-logo-v2.svg to File:Wikipedia_logo.svg. This sounds reasonable, though it may have considerable technical implications. Re: [Wikimedia-l] The Old Wikipedia logo is still widely used - what can we do?
Most news agencies don't just go to the web for their images due to copyright reasons. They will have a media collection system that they have the logo stored in. So the best response would be for the Media Relations/Comms teams to actually contact them and request they use the updated logo. On 21 December 2013 07:02, Amir E. Well, one thing we did was actually retiring the old logo, just few months ago. :) Odder provided no less than 108 Wikipedias with a v2 logo. http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikipedia-l/2013-May/031550.html Nemo ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe

That is no doubt true for major media corporations, but a lot of the uses of the old logo are by born-digital outfits, where I fully expect the procedure to often be Google X plus logo and grab the first decent hit. So there may be much value in the (admittedly unorthodox) rename proposal relayed by Amir. To my mind, the fact it is a logo justifies it. Also, thought experiment: suppose a certain laborer-abusing gadget-producing company, say Elppa, changed its logo last year; suppose it reached out to the community asking to replace our hosted version of their old logo with the new one, because the media keeps getting it wrong. Would we not accommodate them? Looking at the Google results, the first two are from Wikipedia (and these are the old logo), but from the articles [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia logos]] and [[Logo of Wikipedia]]. Both of which still includes the old logo.
