Re: [Wikimedia-l] Community consultation + Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director selection process

2014-01-29 Thread Ting Chen

Hello dear all, hello Transition Team, hello dear board,

I am still willing to take the challenge.

Looking into the description of the search criteria:

citeKey to the success of the Executive Director will be a commitment
to understand and advance Wikimedia's core values./cite
- In many occasions in the past years I have demonstrated that the core
values of our movement are part of my life. They are the values that I
use to guide my behavior and my decisions, not only inside of the
movement, but also in my professional work and in my personal life.

citeThe Executive Director will need to have the technology management
and product development skills to effectively lead a high traffic
website, and experience designing and implementing planning processes
with a high built-in assumption of fast and iterative change./cite
- In the past 16 years I worked in a company which like no other IT
companies had decisively contributed into the establishment of standards
and processes of the industry. I started in that company as a programmer
on the OS (Assembler and C++) level and moved with the time into the
position of technical lead of projects that are set into highly
complicated political contexts. Being a subject matter expert, I am the
anchor with facts and expertise between the different political
interests and streams, build trust with my open and direct communication
style to all groups and parties and move things forward by understand
the background of the different interests and so build bridges and
provide solutions that address those backgrounds directly. These are the
skills and personal marks that brought me there where I am now: Into the
core of those troubled projects.

citeHe or she will need to have exceptional communication skills, and
to possess both a drive to achieve transformative results and a deep
respect for collaborative processes. The ED's ability to effect change
in partnership with Wikimedia's community will be decisive not just to
their success, but to Wikimedia's lasting impact in the 21st century./cite
- As I have stated in my resign letter from the board, I believe this is
indeed the most intriguing, most urgent and most difficult part of the
work that lay directly before us in the next decade. And for this we
need, more than anyone else inside of the movement, an ED who is really
trusted by the community (to which I count the readers, the editors, the
affiliated organizations, their board and staff, the staff of the
Foundation, and the board). Gain trust is hard work, build trust needs
time. It took me long time, two or three years, to build that mutual
trust with many of the people within our movement. And trust is the
thing that thwart the belief that the process has the luxury of time.
Because with the lasting of indecisive time the trust sinks and the
anxiouty raises.

As it is remarked at one point, there is no obvious career path that
leads to this position. After seeing the result of last year's search I
am strengthend in my belief, that I am the best fit for this position.

Greetings
Ting

I will write an update for the meta page in the coming week or so but just to
give you a general sense of where we are at: we are trying to reach potential
candidates in a different way, and so far that looks like a good strategy. This
means more direct contact between the Foundation and candidates and more
pro-actively reaching out to people who initially showed no interest.

There is no scientific way to make the trade-off between characteristics/skills
of candidates. We might very well choose to ignore an important characteristic
if all the others fall into place. And it is of course easier to make a
trade-off on less significant characteristics and skills. The decision to look
for more candidates rather than make a choice in December was not an easy one,
but we were not willing to go for a candidate who was missing too many of our
desired characteristics/skills. This is something that the transition team
does, and its not something that translates well to a table on meta.

I am not sure what you are referring to as “avoid another fiasco”, but as far
as I am concerned we are simply in a stage of finding new candidates and trying
to surface the candidate that is up to the challenge and opportunity that we as
a unique movement have to offer. This was always an option, and we would have
liked to have found someone in the first round, but it wasn’t to be.

Dear members of the Wikimedia Movement:

In the past weeks, I've taken the decision to resign to my position of
Executive Director of Wikimedia Argentina. This decision was presented
 to
the Board of the chapter past Saturday and it was accepted.

For personal and professional reasons, I've decided to return to my
country, Chile, in the following weeks and start a new stage of my
 life.
Two years ago, I was presented with the opportunity of living in
  Argentina
and working for one of my passions. This was a big challenge for me: I
  had
to leave my country and my family and work in a foreign country. These
  last
18 months have been a unique experience and I've learnt a lot,
 becoming a
better professional and a more mature person. However, at the same
 time I
feel that I need to move on and continue with new projects and
  challenges.

Certainly, this has not been an easy decision for me, because I'm very
  fond
of this work, the people that have participated in our activities and
 the
projects we worked on and we are still working on.

I leave the Association in a very different position than when I took
office. We have several ongoing projects and we regularized all the
  delayed
paperwork. We became the first organization from a developing country
 to
get an Annual Plan Grant via FDC and have been one of the best-graded
chapters in both processes. We are now a reliable and serious
  organization,
continuing a process of professionalization that can improve our
  programs,
making them more efficient and more effective. Clearly, this has not
 been
only due to my work, which is why I thank the Board of the Chapter that
helped me in everything and to María Cruz, which has been a great
  colleague
   these months.

My main interest is that Wikimedia Argentina continues to grow, which
 is
why we have decided that my departure occurs at the end of March. This
  will
allow us to work calmly to ensure the continuity of the ongoing
 projects
  of
Wikimedia Argentina and the transfer of knowledge once the new
 Executive
Director takes office. In any case, I will continue to participate as a
member and Wikimedia volunteer, once this period expires. By request of
  our
Board, I will also attend the next Wikimedia Conference, so I will be
  able
to transmit the experiences of Wikimedia Argentina in the last year.

I appreciate the trust placed in me by the Board and all the members of
Wikimedia Argentina and their support all these months. I'm sure they
  will
continue the great work we have done lately.

   Kind regards,

 Program activities GLAM activities
Editathons Art Nouveau

On the 4th December we had an Art Nouveau
editathonhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Symbolism_and_Art_Nouveau/London_Editathon
partnering
with Plus Partage. This gave us the opportunity to tap into the expertise
of a volunteer whose real life job involves valuing Art Nouveau objects for
Christies.
 BCS Women in Science

On the 9th December John Cummings ran an editathon in
Southamptonhttps://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/BCS_Women_Wikipedia_editathon_December_2013
covering
Women in Science.
Image uploading

The British Library announced a major image release of circa 1 million
images.

The massuploading tool went live on Commons and is now available for live
testing - unlike most of our existing tools it has the ability to generate
categories from data in xml databases. So a non-programmer can use it to
upload hundred thousands of files without having every file in an upload go
into the same categories.
Wikimedians in Residence Royal Society

WMUK and the Royal Society were delighted to announce the appointment of
John Byrne as Wikimedian in
Residencehttps://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/12/royal-society-appoints-wikimedian-in-residence/.
John takes up his post in January.
 York Museums Trust

Pat Hadley published his second
reporthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/YMT/2nd_Month_Report
highlights
included image release re the Middleham Hoard, also the first of the
Tempest Anderson photos were uploaded.
Education and expert outreach Menai Llandrillo College

On the 20th, Robin Owain and Aled Powell presented to 27 IT lecturers at
the college, outlining Wikimedia projects, the work in Wales and looking at
how colleges are opening their doors to wiki editing skills and open
content.

Software Alliance Wales has also started to train the community in wiki
editing skills, thanks to the Living Paths Project, in Wales, with 8 of
their lecturers having been trained by Robin at Llanelli and Dolgellau. SAW
trainers will now pass on these skills to the wider community, and the
first full day took place at Lampeter on the 10th at the University.
 Other activities
Wiki Loves Monuments

10th December saw the awards ceremony for the winners of the Wiki Loves
Monuments UK photography competition take place at the Wikimedia UK
officehttps://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Office.
The event coincided with the charity's community Christmas party and was
attended by over thirty people.

Wiki Loves Monuments is the world's largest photography contest. The
objective is to collect high quality photographs of some of the world's
most important buildings - in the UK for 2013, this meant Grade I and Grade
II* listed buildings. Over 570 people took part in the UK competition,
contributing more than 12,000 photos to Wikimedia Commons.

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, said: It's fantastic that so many
people took the time to contribute their photos to the Wiki Loves Monuments
competition. The standard of the winning images is incredibly high and I'm
very pleased to be able to present the winners with their awards.

Robin Brown, who received a highly commended prize for his photo of Wrest
Park Banqueting
Househttps://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/File:Wrest_Park_Banqueting_House.jpg
said:
I'm still trying to decide if I am more delighted to have a glass trophy
for the mantelpiece or in having my image selected by an exceptionally
talented group of my peers for an award. I think it's probably the latter
though.

 Program activities Community

The second Cardiff
wikimeethttps://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Cardiff/2 took
place at the beginning of the month with around twenty Members turning up
as well as a few local non-Members.

GLAM activities BBC Open Content

For the first time, the BBC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:BBC have
dipped their toe into open content waters, releasing three extracts from Radio
4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:BBC_Radio_4 programmes from their
archives, 'Desert Island
Discshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Desert_Island_Discs and
'Today https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Today_(BBC_Radio_4)' under CC-by
licences, as a prelude to releasing around 200 more at an event
Londonhttp://bbcspeakerthon.eventbrite.com/ on
18 January 2014. The donation came at the behest of Wikimedian Andy
Mabbett, who is running the project with the
BBChttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/BBC_voice_project and
has written about the
initiativehttp://pigsonthewing.org.uk/bbc-open-licence-voice-radio-speakerthon/
on
his blog.
 Mining for information

The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical
Engineershttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_of_England_Institute_of_Mining_and_Mechanical_Engineers
in
Newcastle upon Tyne was the site of an edit-a-thon relating to the
institute's collection. Robert Forsythe delivered a report on the
eventhttp://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2013/11/1995/,
which included a tour round the collections, and there was enthusiasm for
the topic, with one attendee travelling from the other side of the country
to be there. The institute is considering a future event based around their
collection so there may be more to come!
 Scotland

The Wikimedian in Residence at the National Library of Scotland organised
an edit-a-thon on the subject of early
photographyhttps://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Early_Photography_in_Scotland_Edit-a-thon.
Topics included the Edinburgh Calotype
Clubhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Calotype_Club,
the oldest photography club in the world, and participants were able to
access the Library's digital collections. An editing session with the
University of Edinburgh's PhotoSoc is also being considered. In Glasgow an
edit-a-thon was run on the topic of Scottish women on
Wikipediahttps://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Scottish_Women_on_Wikipedia
on
Sunday 16th November. Details of the outcomes can be found
herehttps://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Scottish_Women_on_Wikipedia#Results
.
 Photography

There was a strong photography theme in November. Building on the success
of Wiki Loves Monuments, a Wiki
Takeshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_London/Wiki_takes_the_Tube
event
was organised based around London's tube system. The idea was to take
photographs of Grade I and II* listed buildings which weren't covered on
Commons and were within easy reach of tube stations. Towards the end of the
month there was an
edit-a-thon-cum-photography-sessionhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Atheism/Conway_Hall_editathon_27/11/13
at
Conway Hall in London, with nine articles created.
 Education and expert outreach

The Humanities Research Institute at the University of Sheffield hosted a
workshop on Wikimedia: linking research impact and open education. This
is part of a series being
deliveredhttps://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Expert_outreach/Jisc_Ambassador/Research_impact_and_open_education
by
Martin Poulter in universities around the country as part of the
collaboration between Jisc and Wikimedia UK. The goal is to make educators,
researchers and other people in universities aware of ways they can work
productively with the Wikimedia projects, and to get them to commit to
specific next steps. Among the 27 attendees from across the university
were some MA students in topics such as public engagement and digital
librarianship. Evaluation forms and reflections are written
uphttps://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Expert_outreach/Jisc_Ambassador/Research_impact_and_open_education#Sheffield
on
the Wikimedia UK wiki. A quickie version of the workshop also took place at
the EduWiki conference.

Did aff-comm initially recommend to the Wikimedia Foundation board that
Wikimedia Brazil be approved as a chapter? Or did aff-comm talk them into

Funnily enough the cost of doing so has been looked into:
http://news.com.au/technology/lehigh-university-figure-out-how-much-it-costs-to-build-death-star/story-e6frfro0-1226275852491

In short, $8,100,000,000,000,000 and would take about 800,000 years.
Probably not a viable solution :)
