Ping.

I would like to repeat my offer to add this extra level of openness to
this information, my email might have been lost in the long thread. Is
there a reason for not switching on publishing to the public
spreadsheet so that the community can refer to a maintained wiki-table
of the same data on meta rather than relying entirely on Google's
excellent but closed-source collaboration tools?

Thanks,

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Affiliation in username

2014-05-14 Thread James Alexander
I'm heading to bed but will follow up with you tomorrow from the office.
Publishing is on for that sheet at the moment (that's what I'm using to
show it through the link I gave) so not exactly sure what else you need but
I'd love if faebot was able to help keep it synced up on wiki.

Actually, others may have figured it out (I know the one on wiki works),
but I just noticed that particular link was broken somehow in my email
(sysadmin got added to the end). The correct, working, link is
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AvhjkTJIpW2zdDl1bVBuOU1jQUJwOHd5YmhmSzFaZHc&single=true&gid=5&output=html

A similar proposal for per-edit affiliation selection came up recently in
Zürich. It does sound more usable than having to log in using different
accounts.

In our context it might make more sense to let the user select the
affiliation at save time though, rather than making it an extra step after save.

[Wikimedia-l] How to Criticize with Kindness

2014-05-14 Thread Everton Zanella Alvarenga
Hi,

I remember once I shared here some thoughts from Dennett on the importance
of making mistakes.
Now I saw this article about his new book, *Intuition Pumps And Other Tools
for Thinking*,
and I would like to share here also:

http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2014/03/28/daniel-dennett-rapoport-rules-criticism/

"How to compose a successful critical commentary:

   1. You should attempt to re-express your target’s position so clearly,
vividly, and fairly that your target says, “Thanks, I wish I’d thought of
   putting it that way.
   2. You should list any points of agreement (especially if they are not
matters of general or widespread agreement).
   3. You should mention anything you have learned from your target.
   4. Only then are you permitted to say so much as a word of rebuttal or
   criticism."

If someone here read it, please, share your impressions. I'm tempted to do
it.

Tom
