[Wikimedia-l] Happy Ada Lovelace Day
Ada Lovelace Day is celebrated on October 14 this year. Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (born in the year 1815) was a mathematician and computer programmer who worked on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. She foresaw how computers could evolve into devices that perform tasks more sophisticated than simple calculations. She is controversially credited with authoring the world's first computer program, and certainly worked extensively with Babbage. [1] Ada Lovelace Day celebrates women's contributions to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Wikimedia Commons, English Wikipedia, and Persian Wikipedia have designated a watercolor portrait of Lovelace as a featured picture. Pine W, 15/10/2014 09:56: Hi Risker, I am speaking of all of them, and I suppose our mission also, although in ways that are broadly interpreted. For example, as an organization that values freedom and transparency, and is for the purpose of public education for the benefit of all people, I feel that we should avoid investing in organizations or governments that 1. likely tolerate or profit from sweatshop labor, 2. contribute notably to environmental hazards that may harm people, 3. contribute to the repression freedom of expression, 4. conceal government-authorized unethical activities from the public, 5. have significant or consistent problems with corruption or fraud. Considering your list would force even the abandonment of USA treasury bonds (points 2 and 4), I suggest that you need a stricter definition to start with. Twenty years ago perhaps it was uncommon, but today ethical (or social responsibility) investment strategy is common among non-profits and there are many dedicated funds for the purpose. ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Earth Brasil - Exhibition
Hello fellows! Concluding our participation and activities on Wiki Loves Earth, we organized an exhibition during the event Paraty em Foco in the historical city of Paraty - Rio de Janeiro. During the event (Sep 24-28) the exhibition received near 1.500 visitors daily and the exhibition continued until October 12. The exhibition was exhibited inside the Casa da Cultura, an historical building constructed during the 18th century (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Loves_Earth_Brasil_2014_-_Exhibition_-_Casa_da_Cultura.JPG) that is a cultural reference in the region. Students from the near islands/beaches visited the exhibition during Paraty em Foco, as you can see here http://migre.me/mihhY I've published some pictures and information about the exhibition here https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014/Brasil/Exposi%C3%A7%C3%A3o (in portuguese) We received a lot of visibility during the WLE, generating excellent results for Wikimedia Commons. Near 900 new users and 7.000 photos uploaded. The contest and exhibition was published in many sites and blogs, including a printed magazine with 50.000 copies distributed around all Brazilian states. [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference[1] 2015
Hello, everyone. Weeks go by, and the previous conversation was throughly derailed, so out of a profound interest in ensuring a high-value event, I am bringing this up again: we[3] *need to make progress* with planning the working-meeting-featuring-Wikimedia-affiliates-and-WMF-and-the-WMF-Board-and-AffCom[4], whatever we may end up calling it[1]. In the interest of moving on to focus on more substantive issues, and in light of there being only a single bid submitted so far[5], may I boldly *suggest that it be accepted* and that we devote the rest of the time until the spring to ensuring the lessons[6] of the previous years be heeded in *significant preparatory work* by the program team and the affiliates? Asaf [1] or whatever we may choose to rename it. The previous thread was successfully killed by the digression into the event's name. Let's try to keep this one on track, and discuss the name ELSEWHERE[2], shall we?
