Hey All

We have a new project called Video Wiki
 which
allows:

   1. The easy creation of videos from scripts from Wikipedia and images /
   short video segments from Commons
   2. Scripts can have inline references and the text of the script with
references end up in the captions of the video with references. These
captions can be turned on and off
   3. At the end of the video it automatically adds
  1. the license for the text (CC BY SA license)
  2. attribution of those who have edited the scripts
  3. all the metadata for the references supporting the scripts
   4. The final video version on Commons lists the files that the video is
   derived from
   5. Attribution for the images is automatically added at the bottom of
   each image

Have started a discussion here on Wikipedia and would appreciate peoples
thoughts. Will be drafting a formal RfC about the use of such videos
eventually.

[Wikimedia-l] sensory overload/wikimedia events

2019-02-27 Thread Sandra Rientjes - Wikimedia Nederland
*There now is a learning pattern

with
suggestions on how to prevent sensory overload at Wikimedia events.*

Last year, there was a short discussion
on
wikimedia-l concerning sensory overload. Sensory overload occurs when
somebody experiences over-stimulation from the environment: loud noise,
several people talking at once, crowded or cluttered spaces, flashing
lights.

People who are susceptible to sensory overload can experience upsetting
symptoms such as "shutting down" or getting overexcited, difficulty
focusing and concentrating, irritability, sleeplessness and fatigue.

Over the past year, Wikimedia Nederland has been gathering suggestions

on how to make Wikimedia events comfortable places to be for people who are
susceptible to sensory overload.

The results can be found in a learning pattern

on Meta. We hope this is useful for everyone organising events.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia has been accepted as a mentor organization in GSoC 2019!

2019-02-27 Thread Srishti Sethi
Yeah, we can! But, we need projects with a clear scope and two mentors who
are willing to provide guidance to students throughout the summer
(May-August) as they develop their projects. And, this is not necessarily
the case with community wishlist projects that are not in the top 10. In
the past, we have tried to promote the wishlist projects through our
outreach programs but couldn't make any progress.

If any developer is interested in mentoring a project from the wishlist, I
would be happy to chat with them!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia has been accepted as a mentor organization in GSoC 2019!

2019-02-27 Thread Nick Wilson (Quiddity)
Hi James,

I'd like to emphasize the point (so that non-devs are aware) that outreach
programs are generally more work for a mentor than "just implement the
feature yourself" would be. I.e. The mentors generally have to help onboard
the newcomer and get their tools setup properly, and then understand the
feature that is being built better than the newcomer does, and other
additional tasks.
The tangential outcomes can be hugely beneficial -- training a new
community member, helping identify weaknesses in our existing docs, often
finding other new bugs which the mentee will describe very clearly, helping
the mentor understand new areas, etc -- but outreach programs are
definitely not a shortcut to getting more wishlist items completed quickly.
They often require more time-resources, not fewer.

The other important aspect for many community wishlist items in particular,
is that they are often "wishlist items" because they are very complicated
(for technical or social reasons) and hence have not been done for many
years. If they were (relatively) simple enough for a newcomer to complete,
they would've already been solved years ago!

Cheers,
