[Wikimedia-l] Happy Ada Lovelace Day

2014-10-15 Thread Pine W
Ada Lovelace Day is celebrated on October 14 this year.

Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (born in the year 1815) was a
mathematician and computer programmer who worked on Charles Babbage's
Analytical Engine. She foresaw how computers could evolve into devices that
perform tasks more sophisticated than simple calculations. She is
controversially credited with authoring the world's first computer
program, and certainly worked extensively with Babbage. [1]

Ada Lovelace Day celebrates women's contributions to science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics.

Wikimedia Commons, English Wikipedia, and Persian Wikipedia have designated
a watercolor portrait of Lovelace as a featured picture. [2]

Happy Ada Lovelace Day,

Pine

2014-10-15 Thread Pine W
Hi Risker,

I am speaking of all of them, and I suppose our mission also, although in
ways that are broadly interpreted.

For example, as an organization that values freedom and transparency, and
is for the purpose of public education for the benefit of all people, I
feel that we should avoid investing in organizations or governments that 1.
likely tolerate or profit from sweatshop labor, 2. contribute notably to
environmental hazards that may harm people, 3. contribute to the repression
freedom of expression, 4. conceal government-authorized unethical
activities from the public, 5. have significant or consistent problems with
corruption or fraud.

Examples:
1. Some clothing manufacturers
2. Many coal-fueled power plants
3. A number of governments, and the companies that knowingly or recklessly
enable or cooperate with the behavior of those governments by providing
supplies or services that aid those governments' political or ideological
repression of their residents
4. Governments that abusively use secret judicial or extrajudicial
proceedings, and the companies that knowingly or recklessly enable or
cooperate with that behavior
5. A number of large banks

Yes, thanks, those are relevant policies. It appears that we don't have a

 For
short-term investments where the goals are liquidity and preservation of
capital, I think that this alignment should be relatively easy to
 achieve.
For longer term funds that have the goal of accumulating returns,
 aligning
organizational values with ROI may be a little more challenging but
probably not impossible. Hopefully Garfield and/or Stu will comment on
 the
possibility of creating a policy about aligning investment choices with
organizational values. I think WMF's donors would appreciate having a
policy that they could look at, especially when considering a possible
 WMF
  endowment.

Is there public documentation somewhere about WMF investment policy?
  Who

Hey Pine, it looks like you may be looking for

I will say that as someone on the internal 401k committee ( employee
retirement program) mission and values driven decisions are incredibly
difficult to balance well with our legal fiduciary responsibility and
 so
always ended up having to be a secondary (though not ignored) issue.
 That
is, however, a bit of a different case then the greater WMF investments
since our main job is to make sure good 'options' are available for the
staff to choose from rather then actually controlling their money.

Perhaps if the WMF purchased their own cryogenics system for the

In the mean time, as a personal challenge, see if you can include the

I'm not a natural fan of divestment ethics, but I don't know that there
is much dispute these days that it is possible to fulfill fiduciary duties
*and* invest using values / ethics oriented strategy. Twenty years ago
perhaps it was uncommon, but today ethical (or social responsibility)
investment strategy is common among non-profits and there are many
dedicated funds for the purpose.

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Earth Brasil - Exhibition

2014-10-15 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello fellows!

Concluding our participation and activities on Wiki Loves Earth, we
organized an exhibition during the event Paraty em Foco in the
historical city of Paraty - Rio de Janeiro.

During the event (Sep 24-28) the exhibition received near 1.500
visitors daily and the exhibition continued until October 12.

The exhibition was exhibited inside the Casa da Cultura, an historical
building constructed during the 18th century
(https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Loves_Earth_Brasil_2014_-_Exhibition_-_Casa_da_Cultura.JPG)
that is a cultural reference in the region.

Students from the near islands/beaches visited the exhibition during
Paraty em Foco, as you can see here http://migre.me/mihhY

I've published some pictures and information about the exhibition here
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014/Brasil/Exposi%C3%A7%C3%A3o
(in portuguese)

We received a lot of visibility during the WLE, generating excellent
results for Wikimedia Commons. Near 900 new users and 7.000 photos
uploaded.

The contest and exhibition was published in many sites and blogs,
including a printed magazine with 50.000 copies distributed around all
Brazilian states.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference[1] 2015

2014-10-15 Thread Asaf Bartov
Hello, everyone.

Weeks go by, and the previous conversation was throughly derailed, so out
of a profound interest in ensuring a high-value event, I am bringing this
up again: we[3] *need to make progress* with planning the
working-meeting-featuring-Wikimedia-affiliates-and-WMF-and-the-WMF-Board-and-AffCom[4],
whatever we may end up calling it[1].

In the interest of moving on to focus on more substantive issues, and in
light of there being only a single bid submitted so far[5], may I
boldly *suggest
that it be accepted* and that we devote the rest of the time until the
spring to ensuring the lessons[6] of the previous years be heeded in
*significant
preparatory work* by the program team and the affiliates?

   Asaf

[1] or whatever we may choose to rename it. The previous thread was
successfully killed by the digression into the event's name. Let's try to
keep this one on track, and discuss the name ELSEWHERE[2], shall we?
[2] https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Conference_2015
[3] yes, not all the hundreds of people on this mailing list. But this is
still the channel that reaches the greatest number of Wikimedia affiliates.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fwd: [Chapters] Wikimedia Serbia Executive Director

2014-10-15 Thread Salvador A
Great news! Congratulations!

I hope WMRS could tell us how was the experience and difficulties of
choosing a new ED. Such kind of storytelling might be the basis for future
best practices on getting staff.

Welcome Ivan!
