Thanks! :)

Well, to me (someone who was involved in the process from the get-go and
through the entire thing), the greatest difficulty was the sheer amount
of submissions -- 224.

So, our process was as follows: we announced the job opening on two
relevant sites and accepted submissions during the course of 3 weeks.
After reviewing all the CVs, the committee (originally consisting of 3
persons) members gave their ternary grades (+, -, or ?) for each
candidate. Those with not enough "positive votes" weren't considered
anymore, but those with any sort of significant support were discussed
at a long meeting, where we finally made a list of people who would be
invited in the first round of interviews.

Around 30 people participated in the first round, and that was spread
throughout 3 days (about 12 hours in total, so about 20 minutes per
candidate). After that, we made a shortlist for the second round and
that included 6 best candidates. We were quite strict with some
criteria, but we had to be in order to narrow things down significantly.

The second round was held during the course of one afternoon, and the
committee was broadened by a few board members. The second round
consisted of a short test (literacy and general knowledge) and a half
hour interview, that was broader in scope than the first one: we gave
each of the candidates one of the project proposals we got from our
volunteers for the Annual Grant 2015, so the candidates had to comment
them and try to see how the project fit in our mission, what should be
changed etc.

After the interviews, we had some deliberations that lasted longer than
anticipated, but after about a week, one candidate bubbled up and we
selected him -- Ivan.

That's the process in short (there were some other peculiarities, but
they aren't quite relevant for this venue).

Cheers,
Filip

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference[1] 2015

2014-10-15 Thread Pine W
Hi,

I can speak only in a personal capacity.

My occasional readings of information about WMCH have been positive. I
anticipate that visa problems will be no greater than they were at
Wikimania London. The admittedly limited information about the bid sounds
reasonable, as far as it goes. I assume that there will be a thorough
review of the budget and program by WMF and WMCH to ensure that the ROIs
for both organizations are reasonable. It seems to me that *if* this
conference is to be held (I am still a bit skeptical that having this
conference separate from Wikimania makes financial sense), that it is
reasonable to proceed with WMCH as host.

Perhaps the name, scope, purpose, timing, and outcomes of this conference
from past years and for the future can be discussed at the WMCH event.

My understanding is that there is not a community committee that reviews
bids for this conference and that the Chapters Association is likely to
remain in a deep freeze; if the location of this conference is subject to
community consensus, I would vote to support the WMCH bid subject to the
conditions and suggestions I made elsewhere in this email.

Thank you WMCH for offering to host.

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Earth Brasil - Exhibition

2014-10-15 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello fellows!

Concluding our participation and activities on Wiki Loves Earth, we
organized an exhibition during the event "Paraty em Foco" in the
historical city of Paraty - Rio de Janeiro.

During the event (Sep 24-28) the exhibition received near 1.500
visitors daily and the exhibition continued until October 12.

The exhibition was exhibited inside the Casa da Cultura, an historical
building constructed during the 18th century
(https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Loves_Earth_Brasil_2014_-_Exhibition_-_Casa_da_Cultura.JPG)
that is a cultural reference in the region.

Students from the near islands/beaches visited the exhibition during
Paraty em Foco, as you can see here http://migre.me/mihhY

I've published some pictures and information about the exhibition here
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014/Brasil/Exposi%C3%A7%C3%A3o
(in portuguese)

We received a lot of visibility during the WLE, generating excellent
results for Wikimedia Commons. Near 900 new users and 7.000 photos
uploaded.

The contest and exhibition was published in many sites and blogs,
including a printed magazine with 50.000 copies distributed around all
Brazilian states.

The WLE contest and exhibition were organized through the Brazilian

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Foundation Audit - June 30, 2014

2014-10-15 Thread Richard Symonds
Hmm. I'm not sure that everyone will agree on all of those values you
espouse, Pine - they are laudable goals but as an organisation that also
aims to be "neutral", moving in a left-of-centre direction might be frowned
on by some.

Limiting investment options would also limit the returns on those
investments - which would impact our mission (might be good, might be bad)
- and limiting returns on investments would also in turn impact a lot of
other things, for example, the recommended figures that the WMF and
Chapters hold in reserve.

A complicated issue.

I'm not a natural fan of "divestment ethics", but I don't know that there
is much dispute these days that it is possible to fulfill fiduciary duties
*and* invest using values / ethics oriented strategy. Twenty years ago
perhaps it was uncommon, but today ethical (or social responsibility)

It's also highly disputable that the Foundation would be justified in
reducing the fiduciary care it must employ in its investment strategy
for a set of ill-defined objectives that fall entirely outside its
mission - no matter how agreeable those objectives may be to many of the
volunteers.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Cryonics

2014-10-15 Thread Liam Wyatt
Ok, everyone can go home now. The competition for most abstract suggestion
on Wikimedia-L is now closed. As much as I would love for us to discuss
our own personal preferences in 'supercooling vitrification freezer'
manufacturers...
Perhaps if the WMF purchased their own cryogenics system for the
aforementioned company and instead it in the office cleaning cupboard,
staff coud keep the after-work drinks chilled in there too?
In the mean time, as a personal challenge, see if you can include the
phrase "gender-inclusive cryonics solution" in a casual conversation
without anyone noticing.

[Wikimedia-l] Cryonics

2014-10-15 Thread James Salsman
It has come to my attention that certain companies in the Foundation's
employment peer group have been offering ova cryonics as a family planning
benefit:

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/10/14/apple-and-facebooks-newest-perk-freezing-your-eggs/

I recommend that the Foundation explore gender-inclusive cryonics
solutions. I understand that supercooling vitrification freezers such as
those manufactured by ABI, Ltd. of Chiba, Japan called CASfresh or Cells
Alive System may be of some interest.

Best regards,
James Salsman

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Foundation Audit - June 30, 2014

2014-10-15 Thread Federico Leva (Nemo)

Pine W, 15/10/2014 09:56:

Hi Risker,

I am speaking of all of them, and I suppose our mission also, although in
ways that are broadly interpreted.

For example, as an organization that values freedom and transparency, and
is for the purpose of public education for the benefit of all people, I
feel that we should avoid investing in organizations or governments that 1.
likely tolerate or profit from sweatshop labor, 2. contribute notably to
environmental hazards that may harm people, 3. contribute to the repression
freedom of expression, 4. conceal government-authorized unethical
activities from the public, 5. have significant or consistent problems with
corruption or fraud.

Considering your list would force even the abandonment of USA treasury
bonds (points 2 and 4), I suggest that you need a stricter definition to
start with.

2014-10-15 Thread Pine W

Examples:
1. Some clothing manufacturers
2. Many coal-fueled power plants
3. A number of governments, and the companies that knowingly or recklessly
enable or cooperate with the behavior of those governments by providing
supplies or services that aid those governments' political or ideological
repression of their residents
4. Governments that abusively use secret judicial or extrajudicial
proceedings, and the companies that knowingly or recklessly enable or
cooperate with that behavior
5. A number of large banks
