These overlap but they are not quite the same thing. Bug 63518 would
be a smart improvement so that if you are in Wikipedia and have an
article on your watchlist, then you will be notified of changes to
images used on that page. Whereas the Commons based report

notifies you of suspect BLP photograph changes, even when you are not
already watching the articles (or images). The latter is better to
monitor for random vandalism.

Very nice.

If this bug is fixed, the problem would be solved for all images, not just
BLPs: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63518

Perhaps ths indicates that the importance for that bug should be raised?

Dear movement fellows,

Benjamin Smith and Rémi Mathis were not running for a new term. Wikimedia
France board is thanking them a lot for their dedication, energy,
  thoughts, ideas and every single awesome thing they brought to the board
during their terms:
* Benjamin had been on the board for two years and a half, serving as
deputy treasurer then secretary. Among other awesome things, he had been
key in the recruitment process of our ED last year.
* Rémi had been on the board since 2009, and serving as chair since 2011.
He has been the public face of the chapter for many years − including our
fundraising banners in 2011 and 2012. He was named Wikipedian of the Year
by Jimmy Wales at Wikimania 2013 for reasons that shall not be named here.

Of course, considering their overall awesomeness, we are not letting them
go anywhere ; they plan to remain active members of the chapter, and we as
board look forward to continuing working with them.

Christophe Henner and Jean-Frédéric Berthelot were running again and were
reelected. As a reminder:

* Christophe is 29, hardly needs introduction, currently lives in Aurillac
where he is Head of Marketing for the biggest French video game website
(top 3 in the World). He has been around in the movement forever, and at
the board of Wikimédia France for seven years − serving as vice chair since
2012. His focus lies on the internal organisation and international
affairs. You may refer to his Wikidata item [[Q18219536]] for more
information.

*Jean-Frédéric is 27, a research engineer in Lille (North) currently
relocating to London, UK. He is a dedicated Commonist, focusing on GLAM −
especially upload of collections to Wikimedia Commons − and Wiki Loves
Monuments. He has been serving as a board member since May 2012. His
interests lie in quality management and impact evaluation, coopeating &
sharing our awesomeness at the international level, and fostering Cuteness
in the Wikimedia movement. In his free time he enjoys geocaching, curating
commonscat.tumblr.comand baking pastries to his colleagues and chapter
fellows.

Now, we would like you to welcome returning and new board members:

* Sébastien Beyou is 28 and is living in Rennes (Brittany), PhD in applied
mathematics and now a self-employed Web developer. He edit(ed) French
Wikipédia from 2005 to 2011, and is a member of Wikimédia France since
2007, mainly active in tech and communication topics. He was member of the
Board from 2011 to 2012 and served as deputy treasurer; in particular he
co-organised the Finance Meeting in February 2012, whose the discussion
there contributed to the creation of the FDC. During his free time, he
enjoys explaining Wikipedia to public and promoting (often surprising)
physical-life-actions linked to Wikipedia.

* Pierre-Selim Huard is 31 and living in Toulouse. PhD in computer science
with a background in aeronautics, he works as a R&D engineer in green
aviation development. A rugby and photography lover, he is a dedicated
Commonist and OTRS agent. He is active in programmatic actions such as Wiki
Loves Monuments or local actions in Toulouse, and is thus one of the
craftsmen of our long-standing project with the Museum de Toulouse; he also
had been a board member of our organisation previously. As a board member,
his main focus are documentation, quality and evaluation. You may have had
the pleasure to meet him during one of the last three Wikimanias.

* Samuel Le Goff is 40 and living in Paris. He works as a journalist,
former assistant of a MP for several years. His interests lie in
relationship with French authorities, and contributions to public
consultations, to expose Wikimédia positions in public debates in France
and European Union.

* Benoît Prieur lives in Lyon where he is an engineer. He has a background
in computer science and sociology. He is a regular contributor on supported
projects and especially on Wikipedia (but not only!). He participates in
events supported by Wikimedia France and particulary likes editathons.

Our board is now structured as follow:
* Christophe Henner, Chair
* Émeric Vallespi, Vice-chair
* Guillaume Goursat, Treasurer
* Sébastien Beyou, Deputy treasurer
* Benoît Évellin, Secretary
* Pierre-Selim Huard, Deputy secretary
* Jean-Frédéric Berthelot, Board member
* Alexis Marise Bique, Board member
* Léa Lacroix, Board member
* Samuel Le Goff, Board member

I would not want to claim the credit. :-)

This was done the wiki-way, as an interesting tangent from discussion at <
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Better_watchlisting>.
The final SQL is mostly Bawolff's experience, and I happen to be playing
around with SQL to support the Wellcome Images upload project I'm spending
most of my volunteer time on, thanks to some prompting to get more value
from the wiki database from Steinsplitter. When communities use wikis to
work together, it sure speeds up this sort of response compared to working
it all out by yourself.

[Wikimedia-l] Post limits

2014-10-17 Thread Austin Hair
Toward the end of the month, I normally start watching the post count,
since I know that thirty-post limit has a way of sneaking up on some
people. Some months, this gets out of hand quickly, but I was
surprised when the current count was brought to my attention just
halfway through the month.

Pine has tipped the scales pretty heavily, and not for the first time.
I've placed him on moderation for the rest of the month, with the
usual conditions. A few others are getting close; it's probably worth
taking a look at
http://www.infodisiac.com/Wikipedia/ScanMail/Wikimedia-l.html to see
if you're one of them.

[Wikimedia-l] Editor interaction data sets and visualizations

2014-10-17 Thread Pine W
Dear colleagues,

As you may have heard,
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Editor_Interaction_Data_Extraction_and_Visualization
is an individual engagement grant proposal. I am working on this proposal
with volunteer assistance and advice from Aaron Halfaker (WMF), Haitham
Shammaa (WMF), and Fabian Flöck (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
).

We are still developing this proposal, and plan to have it finalized in the
next few days.

We would greatly appreciate your comments on whether you support or oppose
the general concept of this project, and any suggestions about how to
refine the proposal.

Additionally, we would like to hear from you about which sets of editor
interaction data, and what visualizations of editor interaction data, would
be most relevant to your interests. We intend to prioritize our outputs
with your comments in mind.

Please comment on the proposal talk page. Questions and feedback, both
positive and critical, are helpful to us as the proposers, and also help
the Individual Engagement Grants Committee [1] to assess the proposal.

Regards,

Pine

recusing from reviewing proposals in this funding round.

[Wikimedia-l] Vandalism on photographs of living people

2014-10-17 Thread
Due to recent vandalism a new report on Commons for page patrollers
has been started at
.

This page shows images actively used on English Wikipedia biography
articles, where a new upload has overwritten the original by a
"newbie"* account. The report should be automatically refreshed within
15 minutes of a new image upload/overwrite of this type.

Instances of deliberate image vandalism of this type are rare, but
important to handle promptly. If you have suggestions for improvement
of this report, I would be happy to do my best to accommodate them.

Notes:
* For convenience newbie accounts have been arbitrarily taken as
accounts with fewer than 200 edits on the English Wikipedia or fewer
than 100 edits on Wikimedia Commons.
* The report is maintained by Faebot and should be considered in a
draft state as it may be moved to a more 'official' location or be
taken on by more skilled bot operators.

Cheers,
Fae
