Re: [Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy: Draft recommendations are here!

2019-08-18 Thread Chris Keating
Just to follow this up, we in the Roles and Responsibilities working group
have now supplemented our recommendations with three potential future
structural models for the Wikimedia movement. (These have were being worked
on still on in the light of other feedback on Thursday, hence them not
being published at the same time as our recommendations.)

While comments and questions are welcome on Meta, we have created a survey
for each model to help gather granular feedback on the strengths and
weaknesses of each and that is our preferred method of getting detailed
comments.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy: Draft recommendations are here!

2019-08-18 Thread Ilario valdelli

Hi Nicole,

I suggest also to harmonize a little bit the reccomandations of the
working groups too.

I had a quick reading and I found several conflictual points among the
different working groups.

An example is the technology working group where the first
reccomandation is about a decentralization and I suppose about a
"strong" decentralization where everyone can contribute to the vision,
while the Resource Allocation reports the concept of hubs in several
points of their reccomandations.

In this case to decentralize from one point to another point a
competence doesn't mean "decentralization" but it's "delocalization".
Basically it remains a central point of competence delocated
geographically but basically a central point (so the opposite of
decentralization).

This is an example but there are several ones and the time is short to
comment.

Kind regards

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: Diversity Working Group Recommendation 9 - proposal to split in two: "Terms of Use update" and "Licensing Policy update"

2019-08-18 Thread Aron Manning
This draft resulted in the longest talk page
,
and the most passionate feedback. The responses mostly address the
Licensing Policy update, that turned out to be a very heavy topic, while
the Terms of Use update is overlooked.
I think both are equally important, but raise very different concerns and
technical questions. The community feedback would be more focused, if these
two were split into their own recommendations.

I suggest the Terms of Use update be split into recommendation 14 with the
next iteration, so the community can reflect on that topic as well.

It would be also helpful to add cross-references to the strongly
related Recommendation
# 1: Code of Conduct
,
and Community Health Recommendation #1

I'm posting this here, as it seems more likely that it reaches WG members.

Aron

And his option of a dedicated project for non-free content has been
already proposed
in 2015 and 2018
, proposed name
*NonFreeWiki */ *FairUseWiki */ *UnCommons */ etc.
Discuss at: recommendation talk page section

I was pretty surprised this was not mentioned in the recommendation. That
proposal answers many questions, missing from the current recommendation.

I expect the drafts to be revised for new rounds of feedback within that
timeframe. In one week the community gathered information fundamental to
these drafts, but missing from the first iteration. In an agile environment
this can be incorporated into the drafts in a few days, and even in
wikipedian time 1-2 weeks could be enough to publish the next iteration,
and keep the conversation alive.
I hope after Wikimania the WG members will be able to dedicate time for
this, otherwise the tight timeline is not possible. Ideally the most
popular drafts would be updated weekly, or more often, answering some
feedback in each iteration, not necessarily all of it.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] The timeline of the Wikimedia strategy: please reconsider!

2019-08-18 Thread Ad Huikeshoven
To be more precise: on September 15 Working Group members, the Board of
Trustees Members, and all Chiefs of the Foundation will convene in Tunis
for a sprint to discuss these materials.

The working groups will have a lot of work to do to come up with something
that convinces decision makers to embrace recommendation to change anything
from the current status quo.

From participants at Wikimania I sense buy in for a number of more or less
radical changes. The working groups have to be very clear and very specific
which changes they want and why.
