[Wikimedia-l] Learn how to develop bots in small wiki toolkit workshops

2022-01-31 Thread Srishti Sethi
Hi all,

TLDR; Want to learn new technical skills to help improve your wiki? Sign up
for workshops on scripts and bot development, organized by the small wiki
toolkits initiative: <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Workshops> [1].

Small wiki toolkits (SWT) is an initiative to build technical capacity in
smaller language wikis by developing toolkits, conducting workshops, and
providing technical support <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits> [2]. The first set of
workshops for 2022 will teach individuals how to automate work in their
wiki community by developing, maintaining, and hosting bots. These
trainings build upon the lessons learned from two regional initiatives in
2021: [3].

To sign up for a workshop, add your signature under a specific workshop
section on this page <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Workshops> [4]. The
first workshop is scheduled for February 25th, 16:00 UTC. The organizing
team will share more details on mailing lists and on your talk page closer
to the date of the workshop.

The SWT Organizing Team is also exploring issuing digital certificates and
badges to attendees of these workshops. More information on that will be
available in the coming weeks.

We look forward to your participation!

Cheers,
Srishti

[Wikimedia-l] Meet the Community Development Team

2022-01-31 Thread Cassie Casares
Hello everyone,

The Community Development team
 at the Wikimedia
Foundation is hosting our first ever community call on February 23, 2022
from 15:00 - 16:00 UTC on Zoom

.

The purpose of the community call is to provide a space for volunteers to
meet the Community Development team. The five-person Community Development
team is responsible for developing accessible opportunities for volunteers
to grow critical capacities and leadership skills for movement
sustainability and growth. The community call is also a shared space for
all volunteers to hear or speak about projects related to capacity building
& leadership development in the Wikimedia community.

Our first call, Meet the Community Development Team will include a sign up
sheet
for
those who would like to speak for 5-10 minutes about their
individual/community capacity building work.

If you would simply like to attend and listen, join the Zoom link at the
scheduled call time, please find the link here

.

Although the primary language of the call is English, we are committed to
providing simultaneous translation to the best of our ability. Please use
the same sign up sheet

to indicate your language preference so that we can best accommodate
translation support as needed.

Some may be asking, what is capacity building and why is the Community
Development team supporting this work?

What is capacity building? Capacity building is any activity aimed at
developing a skill or capability in others; it can take many forms, ranging
from formal training through online self-study courses to individual
mentorship.

The “Invest in Skill and Leadership Development”

recommendation of the 2030 Wikimedia Movement Strategy
encourages
movement-wide capacity building as a necessity to achieve our strategic
commitment to Knowledge Equity. Capacity building has the ability to
encourage diversity, redistribute and share resources, welcome newcomers
and grow communities.

Community Development is launching this series to ensure we can hear
directly from volunteers who are interested in or who already are leading
capacity building work in their communities. This is one one way we plan to
create a space for direct conversations with volunteers about the different
contexts, challenges, and opportunities in capacity building across the
movement.

How do our projects relate to capacity building and leadership development?

Our team's portfolio is a curation of online and offline learning programs
and resources that aim to enable skill development and resilience in the
movement.

Some of our recent capacity building projects include the Wikilearn Online
Learning Pilot
, Board of
Trustees Candidate toolkit
and
the 2021 Wikimania Speaker Series
.

In order for us to continue building relevant curricula and programming, we
need to hear from the Wikimedia movement. Please visit the Community
Development team page
 to learn more about
our capacity building and leadership development projects.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Wikimedia payroll and related (WAS: Re: Media coverage in Germany: Enterprise / Advocacy)

2022-01-31 Thread Christophe Henner
Hi,

I'm sorry but I feel that discussion is loaded and meant to create a heated
debate and not provide good analysis data points.

I was surprised by your claims, so I picked one example, not giving names
to not single anyone out.

First, you assume the first year is systematically a full year, it never
is. And yes even if you arrive mid january, it does take a dent in your
yearly compensation (it represents 5%).
Second, you voluntarily speak in numbers and not ratio, which makes all
data easy to twist. The one I checked had a 4% to 6% yearly salary increase
which all in all is market practice in the US (we can argue about the
discrepancies but hey).
Third, even if you spot a higher increase, going into personal details
about the increase is meaningless (such increases can be related to pre
negotiated increase, to planned catch up on cost of living, on role change,
role expansion, new responsibilities, beyond expectations achievements, a
load of valid HR reasons).

If only on very specific and verifiable data points like those I can find
how you distort reality to fit your narrative I can only assume you are
doing the same for the rest of the discussion.

Public eye provides a safeguard for problems and financial abuses, yes (and
that's why 503c are public).

But twisting those data to spread gratuitous shade on people working for
the Foundation (and even naming them) is wrong and honestly shows a lack of
empathy (you don't care about how people can live when their integrity is
attacked while they are committed).

So I am happy to jump in Spreadsheet and discuss compensations, but if we
are to do it, let's at the very least do it with a benevolent approach and
minding the people whose job is talked about.

Just a bit of empathy and care goes a long way :)

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Luis Bitencourt-Emilio Joins Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees

2022-01-31 Thread Luis Bitencourt-Emilio
hi molly; certainly.

while I don’t agree with Nicolas’ tweet verbatim - particularly the “need
better critics” bit - what resonated with me personally was being unable to
attribute human values, good vs. evil, to an underlying technology platform.
note; I interpreted good/bad as value judgments here rather than quality
ratings; from a quality perspective, there’s tons of bad tech out there!

in my experience, the communities that build on those platforms are
overwhelmingly the most impactful force in its outcome being either positive or
negative, and oftentimes the same underlying platform is used and misused to
both outcomes by different communities (e.g. the internet).

a potential caveat here is how high or low in the stack one considers… I don’t
think anyone would propose that SQL is inherently evil, but perhaps there’s
specific use cases of higher level technology, particularly in the ai realm,
that can make it harder to separate the technology’s potential from how it’s
being used. in my interpretation of the tweet above, the “platform” wording
made me consider broader, underlying technologies rather than this scenario.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Media coverage in Germany: Enterprise / Advocacy

2022-01-31 Thread Liam Wyatt
Dear Željko,

I wish to make a reply to some of the comments you raise - primarily to
emphasise to the rest of the subscribers on this list that there is already
an extensive community discussion about this Frankfurter Allgemeine
Zeitung (FAZ)
opinion column on the German Wikipedia 'Kurier' forum, starting from here:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Diskussion:Kurier#Antwort_von_Wiki_Loves_Broadcast_zu_FAZ-Artikel_vom_18.01.2022
I encourage anyone who wishes to discuss the issues raised on the original,
and the reply, articles - to do so at that forum.

Relatedly, there is also this point-by-point rebuttal thread on Twitter,
which has been shared by WM-DE too:
https://twitter.com/leonidobusch/status/1483409545473015810?s=21 [with each
tweet being machine-translatable inside twitter's own interface].

But mostly, I wish to emphasise this letter, which written by the volunteer
community leaders behind the "Wiki Loves Broadcast" (WLB) project. The FAZ
opinion column is referring at a community-originating volunteer campaign
to obtain free-licensing for audiovisual material produced for public
service broadcasters. And so, I feel their response which should be the
thing which is emphasised:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Loves_Broadcast/Statement_zum_FAZ-Beitrag_vom_18.01.2022
[English language machine-translated version:
https://de-m-wikipedia-org.translate.goog/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Loves_Broadcast/Statement_zum_FAZ-Beitrag_vom_18.01.2022?_x_tr_sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-GB&_x_tr_pto=wapp
].
The WLB homepage is here:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Loves_Broadcast.[1]

To the other issues raised:
The concept of a free-license means that anyone can use use the material
for any purpose, including commercially: and as we know, many already do.
The FAZ opinion column conflates this fundamental principle of
free-licenses with an entirely separate project being run at the WMF. The
"Enterprise" API project is not licensing content - everyone can *already* use
it. Rather, it is a *service* with higher-speed/volume data throughput than
could (or should) be provided for free for commercial organisations, who
wish to use it. As we say: "Same water, thicker pipe." And ironically, for
the argument being made in FAZ, this API does not include any multimedia
content on Wikimedia projects. I say "should", because if it were a service
provided at no-cost to largest commercial users, that would mean
subsidising their business model with donors' money.
Also, since Željko asked if there was any comments provided by the WMF, I
would like to point out that myself and the WMF Comms team were
coordinating with WM-DE last week about this reply article in FAZ. And
furthermore that the *Enterprise *project FAQ on Meta - which is also fully
translated into German, and has many responses regarding the financial and
legal aspects

[Wikimedia-l] Announcing the 2022 Ombuds Commission

2022-01-31 Thread Karen Brown
Hello, everyone.

I'm writing with information about the Ombuds Commission (OC), the small
group of volunteers who investigate complaints about violations of the
privacy policy, and in particular concerning the use of CheckUser and
Oversight tools, on any Wikimedia project for the Board of Trustees. I
apologize for the length of the announcement. :)

The application period for new commissioners for 2022 recently closed. The
Wikimedia Foundation is extremely grateful to the many experienced and
insightful volunteers who offered to assist with this work.

This year’s OC will consist of eight members, with a two-member advisory
team who will guide the new commission and also, if necessary, fill in in
the event that the OC is unable to act due to incapacity or recusal.

I am pleased to announce the composition of the 2022 OC:

Regular membersÉrico <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:%C3%89rico>

Érico has been editing Wikimedia projects since 2010. He edits primarily on
Portuguese Wikipedia, where he is a bureaucrat, checkuser, and
administrator, and Commons, where he is an administrator. He has, in the
past, also served as an oversighter and a global sysop. He has created
about 1,700 new articles and has made over 270,000 edits in several
projects. Érico can communicate in Portuguese and English. 2022 is Érico's

The 2016 base salary figure for Lisa in my previous mail should have read
$209,706, not $192,018.

[Wikimedia-l] Form 990 clarification request (for the attention of WMF accounts staff)

2022-01-31 Thread Andreas Kolbe
Dear WMF accounts staff,

Could you kindly clarify whether the "Salaries, other compensation,
employee benefits" figure in Part I, line 15 of the Form 990 relates solely
to the 291 employees indicated in Part I, line 5, or whether it also
includes salaries, compensation and benefits for the 82 contractors listed
in Part V, line 1a of the Form 990.

Thank you.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Wikimedia payroll and related (WAS: Re: Media coverage in Germany: Enterprise / Advocacy)

2022-01-31 Thread Andreas Kolbe
Chris,

All the numbers are taken from the official Form 990s filed. You can verify
them for yourself here:

https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/200049703

There is also a table of top-earners' base salaries on Meta, with data
taken from the Form 990:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_salaries

Have a look. They show various individuals' salaries increasing by
remarkable amounts in recent years.

Jaime Villagomez' base salary for example increased by more than $50,000 in
three years, from $237,665 in 2016 to $289,356 in 2019.

Toby Negrin's base salary increased by more than $45,000 over the same time
period (from $192,018 to $237,992).

Lisa Seitz-Gruwell's base salary increased by more than $40,000 over that
period (from $192,018 to $252,117).

These are all base salaries, excluding "other compensation", which adds
another $34K, $33K and $21K to the salary figures for these three
individuals, respectively.

You can find the above figures on Page 7 of the following forms:

The 2016 Form 990 is here:
https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/200049703/201821349349310527/full
The 2019 Form 990 is here:
https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/200049703/202101319349300105/full

In 2008, only three people at the WMF earned more than $100,000:

https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/display_990/200049703/2010_05_EO%2F20-0049703_990_200906

In 2019, it was (at least) 165.
