[Wikimedia-l] Announcing a 3rd funding round for Conference Fund in 2022

Hello everyone,

*TL;DR*: Given the community need for in-person events, we are opening a
3rd funding round for Conference funds for events taking place in September
- December 2022. This condensed round will be for events already in
planning. Proposal deadline is June 13, but you are encouraged to submit
your proposal earlier if possible.


Recently we announced the removal of the Covid travel restrictions
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/03/29/announcement-of-the-removal-of-the-covid-travel-policy/>,
and we are now welcoming proposals to support travel again. Since the
announcement, we have heard many communities expressing the urgency and
desire to convene and resume plans of hosting in-person global events.

We wish to respond to that need, and therefore, we have decided to open a
3rd funding round for Conference Fund 2022, to allow communities who have
already started planning their events for the last quarter of 2022, an
opportunity to submit a proposal.

*This will be an expedited round, *meaning - shorter turnaround time, *for
events already in planning* for late 2022.
This condensed round is designed to support events in September - December,
so we have to be able to finalize decisions by June.

We know what it takes to organize and host a global event. It requires a
lot of capacity, time, volunteers, and planning resources. If you haven’t
started organizing your conference, or if you have the option to delay it
until the next round in September - we highly encourage you to take the
time you need to properly plan.

*Who should consider applying to the 3rd round?*

   - If you already have event planning underway for September - December
   2022, with a clear vision, capacity to organize and a proven community
   interest.
   - If you started planning this event 2 years ago and had to pause due to
   the pandemic, and now can undertake the effort quickly.
   - If you started planning a small scale event, limited by the previous
   restrictions, and now wish to adjust your existing plans to include
   international travel that can be coordinated easily, and require more
   funding.

This new round *will not replace* round 1 for 2022-2023 (proposal deadline
is September 5 <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Conference>). So if
you are thinking of hosting an event in early 2023 - you should wait for
the September round.

*The 3rd round timeline:*
June 13, 2022 -  proposal deadline
June 14 - June 28, 2022 -  Staff eligibility review and feedback
June 29 - July 6, 2022 -  Revision
July 6 - July 12, 2022 -  Finalizing + Announcements

You are welcome to submit your proposal before June 13. The sooner you
submit and inform us, higher the chances we can process your application
faster.

Thank you for your email. I hope I can clarify some of your questions.

*   What is the accepted conference scale?  -  *The recent updates to the
Conference Grants program page were to clarify and provide more information
on the kind of events we are welcoming in general -  and not specifically
referring to the new guidance or tools related to the Covid-19 Risk
Assessment work. In general - we do accept national, global, large or small
scale events, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria. Specifically
for events during the pandemic- we will publish the full guidance and tools
in September

they will address events of all sizes.

 * Is this globally applicable for all countries and all regions? *-  The
guidance will include a host of assessment criteria that will allow
community members to evaluate the specific characteristics of their
proposed event/activity, including location.

*  Round 2 timeline *-For this round we allowed submitting proposals for
events starting from January to allow communities that are already eager to
convene, to do it earlier than usual, probably for smaller scale events
that need less planning. That does not change anything for larger scale
events and the funding round timeline remained the same, other than the
fact we postponed it in 3 weeks.

*The Meta page *- the first notice is a general one we published across all
grants programs to inform on the changes we applied In late March

The second one was to inform that we lifted restrictions we had last year
regarding eligible events (that is why the 2019 reference. It's actually
not a mistake). But I just removed it so it would be less confusing. Thank

We are looking forward to sharing the new updates later this month and I'm
sure those will answer most of the questions remaining.

[Wikimedia-l] Update to the Conference Grants program dates and new proposals deadline

Hello everyone!

Following our last update

regarding in-person gatherings, we wanted to share another update on the
new dates for the upcoming Conference Grants program funding round.


As we want to allow more time for potential grantees to review and utilize
the forthcoming September release of guidance for in-person gatherings, we
have extended the upcoming deadline for new Conference Grants proposals
until  September 28, 2020. Please see all the specific dates on the

We will be accepting applications in September for events occurring between
January - June 2021.

For this round we will also include Growth events

and innovative ideas that will welcome more contributors to our movements
and projects; and on gatherings that will support the implementation of the
Wikimedia 2030 strategy recommendations.

We also wanted to take the opportunity to officially welcome the new member
of our team, Rachel Farrand

many of you already know from managing our past Technical Events Ecosystem
and who has been working at the Wikimedia Foundation on community events
