[Wikimedia-l] Today's eclipse and Wikimedia Commons
Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know about some experimental outreach we have planned for today's solar eclipse, which will be partially visible from parts of the Americas, as well as spots in Asia, Africa, and Western Europe. We put together a blog post <https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/08/18/solar-eclipse/> [1] and infographic <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:August_2017_solar_eclipse_-_upload_to_Commons_infographic.png> [2] to encourage photographers of the upcoming solar eclipse <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_August_21,_2017> [3] to upload them to Commons. This request was placed on the Village Pump [4] last week. We're planning to publicize the blog post on our social media channels today, and the only *specific* outreach we have planned is to encourage people who post high-quality photos on those platforms to upload them to Commons. We're deliberately limiting our push so we don't flood Commons with poor-quality photos, and/or make life difficult for anyone. Please feel free to use the infographic [2] to reach out to photographers, and let us know if you have any comments or concerns with anything. We'd love to work with you all on improvements as needed. This is definitely an experiment, and your feedback will help us figure out if we'll want to repeat it for other (perhaps more global) events. [5] We are also going to collect some basic metrics and will send them out once we assess today's experiment. Thank you! Mel [1] Featuring an interview with Wikimedia Commons user: Juliancolton, the post details how to take eclipse photos and how to upload them to Commons https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/08/18/solar-eclipse/ [2] English: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:August_2017_solar_eclipse_-_upload_to_Commons_infographic.png Spanish: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:August_2017_solar_eclipse_-_upload_to_Commons_infographic_-_es.png [3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_August_21,_2017 [4] https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Eclipse_photography [5] If this works, we would love to help make templates or encourage photographers to upload in the future. Please let us know what events might work with this approach. -- Melody Kramer <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:MKramer_(WMF)> Senior Audience Development Manager Read a random featured article from Wikipedia! <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:RandomInCategory/Featured_articles> mkra...@wikimedia.org ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l New messages to: Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, <mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe>

[Wikimedia-l] How to watch and follow Wikimania 2017 remotely
Hello! As many of you know, Wikimania 2017 will take place in Montréal, Canada from 9–13 August. If you cannot attend this year, there are still opportunities to follow along remotely. Keynote sessions will be livestreamed [1] and recorded throughout the conference on YouTube [2] and Facebook Live [3]. Additional recorded sessions will be posted on the conference notes page [6] when they become available. We are asking all speakers to designate a notetaker for their session, and to copy the template [8] for use in their session. You can also follow @Wikimania [4] and the hashtag #wikimania [5] on Twitter. We will round up presentations and highlights for both Meta and our blog after the conference ends. [6] You can also search the full programme schedule. [7] Please respond here or contact me directly with any questions or ideas to make this experience better for remote participants. - Mel [1] The Livestream schedule is here: https://wikimania2017.wikimedia.org/wiki/Livestreamed_keynotes [2] YouTube livestream links: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK_cUZLMpibyRiIdp0uF-lQ [3] Facebook links will be posted on the livestream schedule when available. [Wikimedia-l] [fellowship] Opportunity for people working on "open projects that support a healthy Internet."
Hi all, I wanted to pass along an opportunity that I saw earlier today via Twitter: https://medium.com/read-write-participate/work-in-the-open- with-mozilla-1410be0a83b2 It sets up people working on "open projects that support a healthy Internet" with a mentor, a cohort of like-minded people from all over the world, and a trip to Mozfest, which is a London-based open Internet conference I've attended/presented at in past years and found really mind-expanding due to the cross-disciplinary conversations that take place. You can see previous projects here: https://mozilla.github. io/leadership-training/round-3/projects/ — it looks like there's quite a broad cross-section and many of the projects across the movement might be applicable. The post notes participants will learn about "best practices for project setup and communication, tools for collaboration, community building, and running events." Thank you to Leila for suggesting I pass this along to this listserv. Feel free to share it broadly. - Mel -- Melody Kramer <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:MKramer_(WMF)> Senior Audience Development Manager Read a random featured article from Wikipedia! <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:RandomInCategory/Featured_articles> mkra...@wikimedia.org ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l New messages to: Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, <mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe>
