Great.
Someone for Android (and other cemeteries) too? Or some open code.

Great news!

We can do a lot of things in this area. For example, an
app for the Pere-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. The app is based on
Wikidata, Wikipedia and Commons. I've started improving Wikimedia
projects and then try to find a dev to write an app or a website. I was
lucky to find a dev specialised on iOS.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Recognition of the Wiki Cemeteries User Group

2020-02-18 Thread Camelia Boban
Yes, I'm responding in my capacity of a UG co-founder, so from a personal
perspective (but also using the knowledge and experience gained during the
participation in the committee).
And no, even if on the territory are more than one UG, the topics could be
different: someone could treat GLAM, someone else Education and so on. And
the language could be different too, not only on the same more extended
territory, but even in the same country. We have different UG based on
language, often acting on the same territory (lgbo Wikimedians UG, Hausa
Wikimedians UG and Wikimedia Nigeria UG are active in Nigeria, for example).

May WikiDonne or Wikimedia Italy say something if a cimitery UG want the
recognition in Italian language? No, because Italian is a language (spoken
in Italy, but also in Switerland, Albania, Argentina etc) not a country, so
geographical discrepancy (in Italy WMIT could have something to say). As
language coverage, WDG could say something, but cimitery is not related to
gender gap (so different topic from WDG).

(For now) At the base of the UG's recognition are also language and
topic/area of activity, not only territory. These are the models
 right
now, with the strategy direction everything could change.

You are probably responding in your personal capacity and not as an AffCom
member. So, I am going to take this as your personal opinion. But if the
intention is to begin to recognize country-specific or region-specific
cemeteries, I doubt you will be able to manage the potential conflicts that
may arise from such recognition in countries with multiple user groups
already.

@Ciell
As one of who joined the group, I can say it is not the charm of the
cemetery itself, but the particularities of the local culture and the
history (many of the personalities are buried, often the texts on the
funeral stones are real poems and the funeral stones themselves are
cultural heritage).
Just think to Campo Verano
 and Protestant
Cimitery (Keats,
Shelley, Gramsci and many other) in Rome, Staglieno
 in
Genoa, Merry
Cimitery in Săpânța
(Romania) etc.

[Wikimedia-l] Recognition of the Wiki Cemeteries User Group

2020-02-17 Thread Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight
Hi everyone!

I'm very happy to announce that the Affiliations Committee has recognized
[1] Wiki Cemeteries User Group [2] as a Wikimedia User Group. The group
aims to collaborate around the scope of cemeteries with existing
Affiliates; connect with new partners and editors, especially in the field
of traditional genealogy; understand cultural sensitivities around the
theme of cemeteries; understand cemetery culture, including the role of
caretakers, specialty items (e.g. flags for veterans, flower wreaths), and
so forth.

Please join me in congratulating the members of this new user group!

Regards,

Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight

Chair, Affiliations Committee
