Re: [Wikimediach-l] WMCH resolution about providing a web conferencing system for the Wikimedia Movement
I also think that OpenMeetings would be great, being a big fan of open source and free software, but the main issue here is one of speed, and volunteer availability. The way I see it, and Manuel can correct me if I am wrong, is that we have someone who is familiar with BBB and setting up such a system for wikimedia will not require a lot of extra learning for him. BBB will take time to set up, of course, but not all that extra time needed to learn the details of an Open software solution and to iron out the bugs. I would say that we go ahead with the proposed BBB solution, and in a few years we can always switch programs. I'd didn't know about the sister project proposal. It looks a bit odd to me, doesn't really fit in the strategy of Wikimedia. I see video conferences as a tool, not a project itself. We have a similar component in the WikiTV project I am leading on german Wikipedia but the results are the discussions we want to document, not the video platform we use. /Manuel Am 25.02.2013 14:05, schrieb Charles Andrès: It seems that Openmeetings has actually been proposed as sister project, http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/OpenMeetings.org But I do not see any progress on this subject. Re: [Wikimediach-l] WMCH resolution about providing a web conferencing system for the Wikimedia Movement
Hello Charles, we have in TAO also good experience with big blue button! But today I see, that OpenMeetings.org is being proposed as a Wikimedia Foundation Sister Project. Do you know OpenMeetings? best Markus Am 22.02.2013 10:46, schrieb Charles Andrès: Dear member of the Wikimedia Movement, During our last Wikimedia CH board meeting, we resolved to set up a web conferencing solution. After reviewing our needs, we decided that the most effective solution would be that of setting up a dedicated server for that purpose. From a chapter level point of view, it could appear like an expensive investment, but put in the context of the Wikimedia movement, this investment (not such a large one, in fact) could be made profitable quite easily. We plan to give access to these tools at first to all the chapters and affiliated group, as then as well for thematic groups. Deployment is planned for the next Wikimedia Conference in Milan. In the meantime, people interested in getting access to the tools can contact us by email at supp...@wikimedia.ch mailto:supp...@wikimedia.ch, with a simple description of the project, an estimation of the number of people interested and the frequency of usage.
