Ignoring the somewhat ad hominem nature of the argument, you do
realize that Indic is something that is used at the Unicode
Consortium to denote the group of Indo-European languages comprising
Sanskrit and the modern Indian languages that are its descendants.

The Wikipedia seems to use Indic and Brahmic scripts as synonyms of
each other. Does your contention hold in that case ?

Admittedly, we are a bit off the original topic.

Hi Abhishek,

It is a novel effort. Wish the event a big success.

One suggestion.

As many on the list may have heard about the growth of Community Radio in
India. Probably it would be ideal if we tie up with some of these not for
profit entities to tap into their recordings and make them available on the
wikiproject platform. This will not only save the energies of community
members in creating new audio articles but will also provide the CR
stations and the rural communities they target a virtual space and also
expand the wiki-India community.

I would be more than happy to take a lead on this if the community finds it
worthy.

Best

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Spoken Wikipedia Workshop - 16th December-2012 Pune.

2012-12-13 Thread Vickram Crishna
I think this is a pretty good idea. Already, the stations have the need to
deliver 6 month's recordings to the relevant Ministry, as part of the tc
of their licenses. We need to establish a 'chain' to each station, whereby
an additional copy (presently, the stipulation mentions a cd or DVD) can be
made for wikipedia.

Actually, I see scope for a very big step forward, where the content is put
up on wikipedia every month, for instance, or even at shorter intervals,
and the Ministry be sent the links. This will considerably reduce the
'unofficial' pressure on the stations created by the need for monitoring
content (presumably to prevent misuse; in reality, such misuse is inherent
in the way that licenses are disbursed, but that is a topic for a different
list).

What I am suggesting, therefore, is cooperation from Wikimedia to make the
content of cr stations available online as a practice. The stations would
love it, because it will give them huge leverage in being able to get the
Ministry off their backs. If the Chapter can get involved, and a framework
established to make this online content available regularly at no cost to
the stations (which work hand-to-mouth, the genuine ones, I mean) I think
it will be a win-win situation.

Even without making it a systemic practice, a lot can be done with
individual stations, and in any case it is only respectful to approach each
station that way. Still, I am pretty sure the existing cr bodies (there are
two) will find this suggestion very welcome, and will put their weight
behind getting a system in place.
