[Wikimediaindia-l] Input methods for mobile phones
Hoi, I blogged about an issue that Bellayet introduced me to. He has to enter in latin script data to trigger the search box on the http://be.m.wikipedia.org.. As I can imagine that this is also an issue for other languages of the Indian subcontinent, I would like you to consider providing us with the Unicode characters that are used for your language in the order you know them by. This should provide you improved support in the advanced toolbar and also (this is my expectation) for the mobile interface. [Wikimediaindia-l] Popularising this list
Hi all, In the last meetup, some wikipedians felt that this list and several coordination avenues for Indian Wikipedias get perceived as only for English Wikipedia. To clear this misconception, we decided on the following course of action: 1. Popularising this list in all wikimedia projects (not just Wikipedia) across all Indian languages. I request Jyotis to use his shiny steward tools for this. 2. Meetup announcements etc. shall also be popularised similarly with a home in meta and simultaneous mirrors in wikis. Tinu, please take note of it. Once we have a good representation, we ll forward important announcements to the respective language lists and village pumps, duly translated. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Input methods for mobile phones
Hoi, There is a difference between a transliteration script and an alternate input method. In an alternate inputmethod you select characters from the screen. In my understanding something like an transliteration script is what Bellayet is using.. Thanks, GerardM PS I cc to Hampton as he is the guy who has to understand this :) On 18 March 2010 16:05, Shiju Alex shijualexonl...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Gerard, We (Malayalam Wikipedians) have asked about this some time back. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Input methods for mobile phones
In fact we are looking for some solution to input Malayalam text in the search box that is available in Malayalam Mobile wiki ( http://ml.m.wikipedia.org/). Currently there is no way to input malayalam text there and navigate to a particular article. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Input methods for mobile phones
Hoi, I did get a list of characters from Praveen and, I have communicated with the likes of Brion about it. Sadly there is only so much that I can do. If there is one thing I want to prevent is that people consider me a ¨toxic personality, a risk you run when you are trying to hard. The list I asked from Bellayet is in the standard order as people expect them I am told. I am not so sure of the list I received from Praveen as the vowels and the consonants are separate.. Anyway, it turns out that they are also looking for a Vietnamese input method.. What I can tell you is that it is best to work together, even find programmers if we can and be nice, friendly but persistent in order to achieve our goal. The good news is that Wikipedia on the mobile is considered a priority!! The other thing is, we are concentrating at the moment on getting Wikipedia right, there are however many websites outside of the WMF that would benefit from a proper input method. To get this we need cooperation from the manufacturers of mobile phones. This is why I have set up a Facebook cause called Enable Wikipedias on the mobile phone. If you are on Facebook, I will really appreciate it if you make this your cause as well. [Wikimediaindia-l] Please provide input for the strategic planning process!
Philippe/WMF posted this message on the Indian language Wikipedias. I am cross posting it here to get wider audience: This message is posted by Philippe (http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Philippe_(WMF)), on behalf of Tyler, from the Bridgespan Group: My name is User:TylerT (http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:TylerT), and I am a member of the team from the Bridgespan Group that has been working with the Wikimedia Foundation throughout its strategic planning process. As you may have heard, as part of this process the Foundation has decided to experiment with making short-term investments to put staff on the ground and help grow readership and participation across the Wikimedia projects and languages in a few high-priority places. The idea of this pilot program is to determine what works, and what doesn't, and document those findings. India is one of the places that is being considered, and we would appreciate any help in understanding the following: # What has the Indian Wikimedia Community done in the past year to increase readership and participation? # What plans do the Indian Wikimedia Community have to continue to work on increasing readership and participation? # What are the greatest challenges the Indian Wikimedia Community faces in increasing readership and participation? # How could the Foundation help? # If the Foundation were to put staff on the ground in India, where would it make the most sense for them to be located? # Is there anything else the Foundation should consider when deciding whether or not to put staff on the ground in India? You can leave comments for me here, or on my talk page on the strategy wiki (http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:TylerT), or by emailing strat...@wikimedia.org. Thanks in advance for your help!
