I'm told in a Facebook post is that we have a silver lining - that you have
four new editors thanks to the Outreach so imho I'd say your event was not
a fiasco but a success for us in retrospect.

I think the discussion has gone off on a bit of a tangent here.

As far as the hospitality (or lack of it) goes, its not *that *big a deal
and certainly does not deter me from conducting any academies in the
future. (and it shouldn't deter Srikanth as well)

That being said we should not overlook the fact that the 2 hour session
was cut short to a paltry 1 hour (with interruptions in between) because

 a. The organizers arrived late.
We were told the session would start at 9 and we there on time. The crowd
trickled in by 9.30 and the organizers shortly after that.

 b. The internet wasn't working
which is why we had to wait for the organizers. By the time the issue was
 solved, it was 10 am.

 c. One of the main sponsors (Temenos, for those who might be interested)
had to give a presentation. Hence the organizers cut short the wikiAcademy
 to fit that presentation in.

Thus we were forced to wind up by 11.10am. Which is hardly sufficient for
 even an introductory session.

I think we all can agree that it isn't easy at all for a speaker with a
set presentation, to adjust to this sort of sudden change. IMHO, Srikanth
handled it well but few things were out of our hand.

 Cheers!

 Hey Srikanth,
Let's start fresh. I think you put in tremendous effort and it is a shame
that you put in so much of work and call it a great fiasco. In my humble
opinion, every experience is good to learn. I was simply asking you to
concentrate more on the session and tell us what was good and bad about it.
This will provide interesting insights and help us avoid more unpleasant
 experience.
I am sorry if I sounded rude. All I wanted to know is whether the fest
was a fiasco or the interaction in the session. And I hope you don't stop
doing this work in the future.

I believe I have inadvertently caused a flare up which has resulted in a
lot of people getting shouted out. Tensions are soaring and I believe I
 caused it.

As far as Accomodation/Travel is considered, from my POV, what I got was
perfect. Saagar had informed me that guesthouses weren't good enough and I
took [and still take] his word for it. He slept in the lab so I could sleep
 in his room.

As for the event, as Sohan pointed out the, delay and internet issues were
the only issue. The internet issue was mine in entirety. I didn't mention
that, OR mention anything about a lab. That makes it my fault.
The MoU: I admit, I didn't read the MoU at all, both the edited and
original versions of it. Big mistake.
Saagar helped me a LOT, and did whatevr was in his power to change the
slot to a weekend to ensure that Sohan could participate.
The lack of time and all was because we, [particularly ME] took time in
arriving at a proper decision. For every 10 mails I got from Saagar, Sohan,
Nitika, Naveen and Tinu on the matter I sent out only one reply.

I admit, the majority of the goof up was PURELY MY FAULT.

The remaining issus were a direct result of lack of time.

I just feel pathetic that I said whatever I did, because I and several
others are now at the receiving end of a lot of people.
At the time of writing the first mail, I was at the receiving end of three
people, one in particular called my session a flop show and blamed
everything on me, causing me to write that mail.
Now, suddenly I'M at the recievning end of no less than 16 people.

I feel guilty that the NIT T team, who did their best to make me feel
comfortable have been put thru this by me.
I learnt a lot at Pragyan, it was my first tech first, to be honest, and I
really enjoyed the guest lecture that I attended, which I feel is specially
significant to Wikipedia, which I shall write separately about soon.
Sohan may feel different, but as I said over the phone to Nitika, I and
ONLY I am to blame for what I did.

I hope this isn't the end of what I was hoping would be a good
partnership. It is quite rare to see the top brains look at Wikipedia from
our POV. Most top schools/colleges etc are snobs [it's a stereotype but
mostly true in my experience] and these guys seemed genuinely interested in
 what was being done.

I just feel pathetic at being such a screwup. As stated earlier I have a
lot to learn and till then I shall not volunteer for an academy/workshop.
I'll merely be a spectator and wait till I mature into someone better. The
real world is not so rosy as the Wiki world is.

 Srikanth.
P.S: I did manage to get a picture of the NITT gate which is now on the

 Hoi,
I blogged twice today about mobile. Once because of Kannada but more
relevantly because I learned that other projects are now also supported
under Wikipedia mobile. The consequence is that you may want to check out
the mobile main page for other projects in your language.
 Thanks,
   Gerard

 Thanks Tinu.

My congratulations to everyone who worked on it Shrey, Santhosh, Junaid
 and especially, Naveen.

I'm sure Erik is aware and following the development. But I think this
tool can have a positive impact generally, as a new search project. it can
do wonders for projects like Wiktionary, consolidating
 different language versions.

I have proposed a new project on Meta based on it -
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Live.wikipedia - Feel free to make
changes and edit it as you see fit.

If anyone is in contact with Shrey, please link him to that page, in case
he wants to make any changes. I didn't want to leave my name there first as
the one who proposed it, since I believe that title should go to Shrey or
the people who worked on it. This is good work done by everyone involved.

 Theo

  Hi

I just saw this Live search project http://live.wikimedia.in/ supported
 by Wikimedia India.

I was travelling recently, so I must have missed the announcements for
it. Can someone fill me in about how this came to be? This looks like an
excellent project, the chapter did an outstanding job supporting it. I love
 the twitter-ish font-end.

It seems like a great tool that can even be a new general Wikimedia
project. A live version. I would like to learn more about it.

 Regards
 Theo

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Tamil Wiki Media Contest

2012-02-29 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
 Hello All,

The contest is now closed. A total of 15217[1] (5 times our expectation[2])
files were uploaded by around 300 contributors. We are planning to announce
the results by March 25th (Yes, selecting 9 prizes out of 15,000 entries is
slightly tough task). A detailed report / statistics will be available
soon. Thanks for your support.

The fact that 300 volunteers participated in this contest in really an
exciting news. Hope the contest helped to attract many Tamil speakers to
Tamil Wiki projects.
