[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [WikimediaMobile] Let's applaud the India Hackathon
Crosspost to the Wikimedia India Mailing list. --Kul - We recently completed a Hackathon in India where the themes were: * localization * mobile * offline In summary, over one weekend more than 50 volunteers from many parts of India added their hard work and insights to the technical foundation of Wikipedia. In the mobile area alone, volunteers contributed to 17 features, as listed here (features that were worked on are marked with an "H"): http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Projects/features#India_Hackathon We also got support and input from most of the major mobile operators in India about how to make our user experience better. Free access to Wikipedia is moving forward on a number of fronts, as we identified several forms of collaboration, not just in the form of Wikipedia Zero. For example, there seems to be widespread interest in using an RSS feed of the Article of the Day, and the top 5 languages in India are important. This was our first hackathon in India and all in all, it was a resounding success. For those of you who were at the event, many thanks and congratulations for your achievements in such a short period of time! We certainly hope you continue to stay involved and continue to contribute. IRC is a good way for developers to stay in touch. Join wikimedia-mobile on irc.freenode.net. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [WikimediaMobile] Let's applaud the India Hackathon
Hi Arjuna, We were really happy with the turnout and super excited that there was so much interest from the dev community in India. We definitely want to find ways to support and grow the community and do it again in the near future, working hand-in-hand with the local Wikipedians on this. Yes, it was the first one we did in India (and we kind of put it together at the last minute) there's always room for improvement! Also, if anybody is particular interested in mobile please contribute to the meta page: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Projects and more info on research, as it particularly applies to India can be found here (there is a link from the mobile project page from meta): http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mobile/Research or if you don't know where to go with your feedback or ideas you can start here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mobile_Projects Cheers, Kul On Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 3:58 AM, Arjuna Rao Chavala wrote: > Hi, > Thanks Kul for the update. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [WikimediaMobile] Fwd: IRC office hours with Kul and Amit, about Wikipedia Zero and other mobile work
And I know this may be late for some of you in India so, if people are interested, we can do one a few weeks later as well. At that time there should also be more news about our work in India (probably in June). --Kul On Thu, May 3, 2012 at 11:40 PM, Srikanth Lakshmanan wrote: > For those who are interested on mobile partnerships. > > -- Forwarded message -- > From: Steven Walling > Date: Fri, May 4, 2012 at 4:31 AM > Subject: [WikimediaMobile] Fwd: IRC office hours with Kul and Amit, about > Wikipedia Zero and other mobile work > To: mobile-l > > > FYI... > > -- Forwarded message -- > From: Steven Walling > Date: Thu, May 3, 2012 at 4:01 PM > Subject: IRC office hours with Kul and Amit, about Wikipedia Zero and other > mobile work > To: wikimedi...@lists.wikimedia.org > > > Hi everyone, > > On May 17th at 16:00 UTC, Kul Wadhwa (Head of Mobile and Business > Development) and Amit Kapoor (Senior Manager, Mobile Partnerships) will be > in #wikimedia-office to talk about Wikipedia Zero,[1] as well as the other > initiatives underway on the mobile team. > > As usual, details and time conversion links are on Meta.[2] We have > scheduled this at a time that we hope works for Wikimedians from Africa and > Asia, since it was Abbasjnr's idea to have a mobile office hours. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Mobile Version displaying old content
Yes, sad to say, this problem has been around for quite some time. But there's now more attention on mobile dev issues so I think it will get addressed at the Hack-a-thon in Berlin next week. --Kul On Wed, May 4, 2011 at 9:50 PM, Shiju Alex wrote: > This is a known issue and developers are working on it. They ran a few marketing ideas by us before the launch but we weren't aware of this one in advance; we found out the same time as everyone else. We don't have the available staff to work with Airtel on these promotions so we rely on them, as we do with other partners, to run many of them at their own discretion. I also believe it would be great if WMF could coordinate with the chapters more but we'll need additional resources to do so. It's definitely worth talking about... Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] #IWikiWhen trends in Twitter
Yes, my apologies. Karthik also brought this to my attention. I know all of these companies quite well and certainly know the difference between Airtel and Aircel. I consider this a typo mistake on my part. I definitely meant to say Aircel, and we greatly appreciate Aircel's support. [Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Looking for Wikipedians to add already translated articles
Forwarding to India list to cover Indic languages. See below. --Kul -- Forwarded message -- From: James Heilman Date: Tue, Aug 20, 2013 at 4:12 PM Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Looking for Wikipedians to add already translated articles To: wikimedi...@lists.wikimedia.org, Kul Wadhwa We at WikiProject Medicine are working on a collaborative effort with Translators Without Borders (TWB), a group which includes 2,000 or so volunteer translators. We are working to translate key medical articles into as many other languages as possible. Currently we have translated content into 50 or so languages amounting to 2.3 million words of text. The process involves first bringing articles to either GA or FA status in English. They are then delivered, with MediaWiki markup in place, to the TWB website where the text is sent out to the translators. Once translated we at Wikipedia are notified via orange links on this page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:MED/Progress This issue currently is that we are missing Wikipedians in some languages to add / combine the translated content into the respective Wikipedia. Some of the article created through this process have reached feature article status including translations into Hungarian of anaphylaxis and hypertension. We currently have translated content in the following languages waiting to be integrated: Hindi Chinese Persian Tagalog Indonesian Macedonian Greek Bulgarian Danish Polish Swedish Arabic Ukrainian Dutch Czech Serbian Slovenian Spanish Telugu Tamil Punjabi Turkish Kurdish Thai Swahili Yoruba Kinyarwanda An overview of the efforts can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:TTF If you are interested in getting involved in adding translated articles instructions are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/Translation_task_force/Adding_content If you have further question or comments I would welcome the feedback.
