This phenomenon was troubling me too, and now I have a name for it.
Personally, all I do before uploading images to Commons is the occassional
rotation, crop or slight sharpen. However,

photographers name contains non-ASCII letters like umlauts, arabic, or
cyrillic letters, an additional ASCII version would be helpful
