Re: [WISPA] Re: Interference with TV
We have seen this from local oscillator and/or CPU clock oscillator interference from wireless radios used for Internet access. The radios in question were a Trango Fox one time and a YDI Etherant another time. I am guessing any radio using an external connected POE driven board over unshielded twisted pair could act as an interfering source. Brand is likely not important. This was corrected using RF Ferrite Beads installed at the cat 5 cable right as it comes out of the radio and at the POE end as well. If this does not fix it you will have to move the wireless radio or TV antenna apart farther than they are now. Cheers, Scriv Marlon K. Re: [WISPA] Re: Interference with TV
I note some of the respondents are thinking satellite. I'm thinking 10baseT or 100baseT bleeding into the household coax distribution. Any chance the ethernet runs alongside the coax for any length somewhere within the home? With cable TV I've seen ethernet put interference on the screen for weak cable stations. Since the sat dish is outside and we're talking wireless Internet coming in from outside too, any chance the ethernet is running along side the coax that feeds the inside satellite decoder? That might be able to take out all TV. Rich - Original Message - From: "Marlon K. Not with Dish Network, but I have with the Musak dishes. I mounted right under one of their dishes on my client's rooftop. After I turn it on their music started skipping and cutting out. I relocated to a few feet away and the problem went away. I honestly didn't ask questions and didn't worry too much about it - I just know that with my box on (a Tranzeo TR-6015) the music would skip. When we would turn off the Tranzeo it would not. So, I just moved it, no big deal. - Original Message - From: "Marlon K. I know you're not asking if something between two and six gigahertz broadcasting at less than one watt could affect low megahertz spectrum. If your car horn honked every time you turned on the kitchen light, would you assume the kitchen light was honking the car horn? Whatever the problem is, it belongs to Echostar, not you. - cw Marlon K. You don't need licensed to high throughput backhaul. For example, Orthogon's Spectra provides 300Mbps aggregate at a price point generally less than 45Mbps licensed. -Matt Bobby Burrow wrote: I'm looking at moving to a licensed solution to increase throughput across one of out backhaul links that spans 5 hops. RE: [WISPA] VPN and router choices
Netopia at each location. IPSEC or PPTP both server and client. Have over half a dozen installs using both DSL and Wireless mixed. Models to look at are R910 and 3300 series. Im looking at setting up some VPN's and I have looked at many routers that claim ease of use. Linksys, NetGear, D-Link and so on. I was wondering if someone could tell me what is the easiest router for setup. Also, does one have to have a VPN server( i.e Windows or Linux) or does the router take place of this for remote connections. The senario I have is one central office with 2 satalite offices that connect to central. The central office having the main VPN router. I want to have the two seperate locations seen in the network neighborhood. Would this be a router to router VPN? If so what are the easiest one's to configure. Re: [WISPA] Airimba
We had a booth at the Atlanta Apartment Association show where they exhibited as well. They were very unprofessional in attempting to "spy" on us during the show. We would have told them the same information if they had only asked. Additionally, we have seen their work in Athens, GA and weren't impressed. I also understand they had opened a retail sales office there only later to close it down. I can say for sure that none of their deployments in Georgia are at any important apartments developments. -Matt chris cooper wrote: Hi- Anybody have any experience with Airimba in a multi-tennant deployment? Re: [WISPA] VPN and router choices
Bo, make sure that you're that you're not mis-interpreting VPN support with VPN services. Most of the $20-$100 routers will allow IPSEC (the good stuff) and PPTP to pass through the device. But, the only way I know of to get any of these to act as a VPN client or server is to upgrade to opensource firmware. For example, the WRT54GL will act as PPTP client or server and can act as an openvpn client when you use DD-WRT. See wrt54g.net for info on how to do this. But, keep in mind that this configuration voids the warranty and any support. Also, the device has 200mhz processor with 8MB RAM and 4MB flash. So, it's no powerhouse. You might look into linux boxes (to do an SSH VPN, IPSEC with FreeSwan, or OpenVPN for an SSL-based VPN), a Cisco PIX, or a SonicWall. I warn you that VPN is not an easy thing. PPTP is fairly simple (and it works with win98 clients with no 3rd party software). But, it's also proven to be insecure. VPN appliances are not cheap (probably >$500-$1000 for one that can handle any sort of load). But, you might be able to use a soekris board with a linux firmware that supports some VPN technology. Those are still cute and tiny (with plenty of horsepower), but cheaper.
