Re: [WISPA] FCC Slides that didn't make it in time to be used

2005-09-15 Thread rcomroe
Good eye. You never know who will take note, but I wouldn't be so sure that
this would necessarily be noted by even the FCC.

I'll never forget an scene I watched, even though it was 29 years ago (you
just don't forget some things). We were giving a live demonstration of new
2-way trunking radios to FCC and FCC staff members in DC. We certainly had
expectations that we were presenting to people who knew what we were talking
about. Yet when we invited the FCC FCC staff members to try the radios
themselves I saw an FCC staff member hold the mic in their hand up to their
mouth and said hello, and then move the potato mic over to their ear to
listen.

But I agree with your suggestion. You don't want an image with your name on
it to give a wrong impression. But I'd be surprised if anyone with the FCC
would actually note the omission. :-)

Hello Rick,

The last slide should be pulled as the climber is not using safety
equipment. Not a good showing if we flaunt safety rules.

Rick:

It's not so much that FCC personnel would know what they're looking at,
but if it's distributed as part of the official record, any competitors
to the WISP industry who do know they're looking at would be quick to
point out any issues TO the FCC to discredit WISPs.

ANYTHING that is submitted for official record should really be
checked over for all the i's to be dotted and the t's to be crossed
(offered from a survivor of more than a couple oopses that have made
it into mass-circulation print.)

Thanks,

Hello Rich,

IIRC, Bob Moldeshel had mentioned ( years ago) that if OSHA sees the picture
they can
track down and fine the person doing the violation. Not sure if that
is high on the list of things for OSHA to do, but why give them a
opportunity?

Also, we all need to practice safe climbing.

I quickly skimmed through the document and found a very honorable
mention of WISPA and Mac Dearman.

I think WISPA should be grateful that Bullit offered our organization
to the FCC in a very positive light.

We should find more ways to build a relationship with P-15, together we
can accomplish more.

[WISPA] A Message from Brother Larsen

2005-09-15 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists

Hello all,

I considered going to the FCC meeting today, but it would have been a
huge time committment for me after already making a pretty big
committment to get down to Louisiana last week. If I really felt that
this was the time for us to come out to the forefront and declare our
industry ready to take charge, I would have gladly taken the time to do
it, but WISPA was mentioned as one sentence in one report that was
little more than a footnote after all of the stories of sacrifice and
tremendous efforts that the ILECs bandied about.

We are still nothing more than footnotes to the FCC and the telecom
industry. 250 miles north of NOLA, we had spotty cell phones and the
regular phones only worked half the time - which is why Mac's team went
down south and is doing something very SPECIAL and AMAZING down on the
Gulf Coast.

In my mind, the thing to do right now is to keep on plugging away on the
relief efforts and save our promotional activities until we have a
little bit more under our belts. Many in our industry made donations
that went straight to Mac's team, and will keep them fed and operating
through the weekend - and I will say this right now

MAC'S GROUP IS GOING TO BRING A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF POSITIVE VISIBILITY
AND CREDIBILITY TO OUR INDUSTRY

That FCC meeting is going to be completely forgotten in another week or
two, but I guarantee that people are going to know the legend of Mac
Dearman and his motley crew for years - and the most important thing to
do right now is to stand behind him and support him in this time of
need. If any of you had been there, you would have felt the incredible
power of that team, the energy flowing between everyone and the focus.
Many in that team knew little about WISPs - they were network or VOIP
guys - but they are believers now, I guarantee it. In the next two
weeks, they are going to show the world what the git er done attitude
can do, and it is going to put the Telcos, the cableops and the FCC to
SHAME!

Gentlemen, our golden moment is upon us - we are about to rise from the
horizon of obscurity and start our fast rise into respectability,
credibility and investability. Our seat at the big table is being
prepared, and Mac Dearman - probably one of the most unlikely heroes we
could ever have, and yet probably the most deserving - is going to pull
the chair out for us.

The most important thing we can do for the next thirty days is going to
be to make sure that we can put any possible resource in front of Mac,
just to show what ONE MAN, ONE WISP can do with resources behind him.
When his job is done, the most important thing we can do will be to
trumpet that acheivement - we need heroes and the stories behind those
heroes will be remembered. I want every person in America to know who
Mac Dearman is - because he stands for all that is great about our
country.

After being down there for a few days, I have completely recommitted and
reworked my video project idea about WISPs to focus on Katrina efforts
and how the things that Mac is doing are just a reflection of what WISPS
do everyday, all over the world. I have two hours of video footage, and
another two hours coming from a videographer in Louisiana, and I fully
intend to make a documentary that tells our story like nothing else. I
have no idea where I will come up with the money and time to get that
video done, but I WILL FIND A WAY! I was in tears at home last Tuesday
night, feeling for my friend Mac and wishing I could be down there
helping him out - but it only took me about 30 minutes and two phone
calls before I figured out how to get it done. I was able to enjoy a
once in a lifetime opportunity, and I was able to be part of something
meaningful and pure of heart. This is our chance to make a difference,
RIGHT NOW! It is time to seize the day.

Our number has been called, are we going to stand on the sidelines or
get in the game!

LETS DO IT!

Re: [WISPA] FCC Open Commission meeting - Real Audio

2005-09-15 Thread Bob Moldashel

Hey Matt,

I am sure you may have figured it out but in case you haven't, here it
is..

By Mark Rockwell mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

September 15, 2005

The FCC is moving to get new efforts in place to support the recovery
of telecommunications in the Gulf Coast region in the wake of
Hurricane Katrina, including some wireless programs.

During an unprecedented off-site monthly FCC meeting at BellSouth
Telecommunications Inc.’s Emergency Control Center in Atlanta today,
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin proposed using $200 million of universal
service funding funneled through existing programs to aid the area in
communications recovery.

Part of that funding would provide those using FEMA disaster
assistance with support for wireless handsets and a package of 300
free minutes of service for evacuees and people still in the affected
area.

The proposed $200 million total would be funneled through several
existing programs, such as the agency’s low-income, rural health care
and E-rate programs. The low-income program would fund the wireless
handsets and free wireless minutes.

Under the proposal, health care providers in the region, including Red
Cross shelters, would apply for telecommunications support aide at
discount rates. Also, Martin said, the commission would open a new
funding window to re-connect schools to the Internet in the area. He
also suggested the establishment of an “expert panel” of public safety
and communications industry executives to examine how the storm
affected the network infrastructure.

[WISPA] Satellite Anyone?

2005-09-15 Thread Jason

Hello everyone,

Has anyone successfully used satellite (ie, Directway 7700 or
similar) as their source of upstream bandwidth? If so or if not, why?
How did it turn out? Any suggestions? T1's are hard to come by here,
and I'm still shopping for alternatives.
