[WISPA] If there is not a rule about posting off list content on list, there needs to be one.

2007-07-30 Thread Michael J. Erskine

I've had time to think on this as we spent the entire day working a
lightening strike. Spent some time talking with Graylend and got some
good advice from him.

Rick, I will be unsubscribing from this list, not because of your
selfless work and sincere attempts at fairness but because I can see
that my presence makes your job harder due the those few who will
whine and knit pick at every post of mine. It is unfortunate that those
few don't have the courage to come out into the open or contact me
off list, but they have the audacity to whine and complain to you to
the point that they can harry you into a mistake.

I will not file a complaint about Peter posting my off list comments
on list... as I have just taken the same liberty of violating that
"unwritten rule of list etiquette". No doubt you will have no more
problem with that action than you did with Peter's posting of off
line content.

Again, I am unsubscribing from this list to make your job easier by
silencing those children who can not find the courage to bring their
complaints to the person they wish to complain about. Sadly,
Rick, there will alway be those who hide in the shadows and whine
for someone else to fight their battles but maybe this will get two
of them off your back.

Lastly, I have redacted your comments to remove certain information
which might cause even more problems.

Good day...

Subject: My Response ...

Rick;

Forward this to whomever you wish. You do need to make
it more obvious when you are posting on and off the list, Rick.

I was going to post this to the public list since I was publicly
dragged thru the muck by RICK. Literally three minutes ago
I noticed that you folks had had your vote and decided to
drop it on the board list.

The board decided to drop it based on my recommendation, thank you very
much.

What follows was my response:

---
--- Quote ---
---

If I am to be charged in public, I think I should reply in public.

1) My post, to Peter R. was off list until Peter R. posted it to the list.

My apologies, we did not catch that part. personally feel that there
are some
people you should not respond to privately even. (personal reference
redacted MJE).

2) There was nothing discourteous about my post. There was no
swearing. No insults and no name calling.

Hence the reason we did not take any action!

3) The gentleman claimed my original post was off topic. I explained
how it was not off topic and in the first paragraph explained why the
FBI would never come forward to explain how they collect
their information. The gentleman claimed I had made an
anti-government tirade. The gentleman apparently can not read
for content. I spoke an opinion. I will be the first person to
support my government and the LEA's in general. Why would I
join the CALEA committie if I did not want to support the FBI.
Never-the-less, I am allowed an opinion and the expression of that
opinion.

Very true, but you might consider that other people may have a different
opinion to what is relevant on-list topics and what is not.

4) Either the gentleman is playing the board or someone is playing
the gentleman's comments for his own personal agenda, I know
not which. If everyone left every time that someone upset them
a bit, there would be maybe a tenth as many members today as
there currently are.

It's a shame some people can't just let things go isn't it.

5) The gentleman posted off line content in an effort to support his
feigned desire to leave WISPA. If the board accepts that kind
of blackmail, so be it. Did the gentleman also suggest to the board
that I be removed from the

Yes he did, but we did not accept the attempt of "blackmail" as you call it.

7) How exactly this came up is beyond me. Did the gentleman
come to you to have me kicked off "or else", or did Rick just
take it upon himself to bring the charges.

I did not take it upon myself, in fact I forwarded everything to the
board and tabled it until we discussed it. I feel I acted appropriately
although I probably should not have used your name in the subject line. My
apologies for that.

8) Why was this charge not brought privately, in the first place?

Probably because I was upset that this was being thrust on us on a
Friday afternoon after a very long week.

Is it because my off line post to the gentleman was dropped on
list?

Most likely

Isn't there a rule about that kind of violation of privacy?

I would think there is an unwritten rule of list etiquette.

Aw, well.

Gentlem, decide what you decide and let me know. You might as
well do it publicly since Rick has dragged it out onto the list in
the first place.

Thank you again for your vote of confidence!

2007-07-30 Thread Mike Hammett
The reduced costs are big in cellular when you factor in roaming. They said
in the article, they could have over $1B in savings due to roaming alone.
That takes it down to under $2400 per customer. Say $50/month (I wish I
only paid that!), that's a 4 year repayment. Not a bad long-term
investment.

This astounds me. Read the dollar amounts and customer counts below:

Verizon agrees to buy Rural Cellular

Verizon Wireless is snapping up Rural Cellular in a deal valued at $2.67
billion. The deal will boost Verizon's subscriber numbers by more than
700,000. The Washington Post/Reuters

A bit of quick math says that they are paying over $3,000.00 per
customer for this company. Obviously WISPs are not able to command such
valuations but it is interesting to see what the bigger guys will value
top end wireless companies

Re: [WISPA] What are your customers worth?

2007-07-30 Thread Blake Bowers

Kind of rough to figure out what exactly they are paying
per subscriber, the system may have a lot of
revenue from other sources, such as co-locating.

Put another cell carrier on the tower and you can add
another 200K or more to the value of the tower.

IE, if you have a cellular carrier on your tower, and
want to sell, you can expect 8 -9 -10 times yearly
revenue, or in some cases even more if you want to
sell that tower. (Yep, I'm buying!)

Even at the low end of valuation, with just 100 of
their towers having a co-locator (And that is a low
number for them) thats another 14.5 million
dollars of value to Verizon.

15 to 25 percent of the total value of the deal may be
coming from other income sources.

[WISPA] ice bridge

2007-07-30 Thread Travis Johnson

Hi,

I am looking for an inexpensive ice bridge to cover some 2ft dishes.
Ideally something that will mount to a 2 inch pole. We have some towers
that have ice pieces as large as 4-5ft and fall almost 100ft before they
hit the top of our dish. :(

We have made one before and it works, but it took a lot of time.

some interference. I do have some channels showing peaks in the -88 range.

The best RSSI we can get is -77. Any thoughts?

This is our first time aligning dishes. Our LOS is very good and we are
pointing, to the best of our knowledge, in the right direction.

Re: [WISPA] Business Networking International

2007-07-30 Thread Clint Ricker
I guess as a followup, just simply understand that it takes about 5-10 hours
a week. Ask your local chapter for the statistics on general number of
referrals passed and see if it works for you. I would recommend doing the
math on the front-end, since, for a lot of service providers out there, it
simply doesn't make sense, even under best-case scenario. On the other
hand, for other service providers out there, it can make great sense. A lot
depends on your niche market, ARPU, etc...

In general, it will work well for you if your target customer is a smaller
business with a high ARPU and good margins. (IE you are doing a lot of
bundled PC support or such). If you are primarily an access provider with
small margins, it will not be worth the time.

Hi Mike, I attended my local chapter and was
impressed. You will have to pay quarterly dues and
there are membership requirements such as attendance,
rules of engagement; in order to make it worthwhile
for members. It is especially great for small

Try Times Microwave (lmr-400 (50 ohm)) or (lmr400-75 (75 ohm)) as the
mfgr and Tessco as the distributor; you will have to purchase the
N-Connectors separately; however they are not difficult to terminate.

2007-07-30 Thread Clint Ricker
I was a member for about a year. In the end, I left because I felt like
there were more effective ways of marketing, although that really does
depend on the type of business you're running

For those of you who don't know, BNI is a business referral organization
that revolves around weekly meetings where you trade referrals (ie you may
know someone looking to buy a house, in which case you'd refer that person
to a realtor in the group; likewise, if a person ran into someone who was
looking to change ISPs, they'd (ideally) point the business your direction).

A few notes about this:
1. Mostly small businesses (and, on the small side of small businesses)
2. Good way to get "small clients"; ie DSL-level accounts and computer
repair sort of work
3. Not good if you're trying to win "bigger" accounts (ie $500/month and
up), simply because the people who usually come to these meetings don't have
the connections (chamber and face to face is much more effective for this).
4. Also only effective if you can/are willing to refer a lot of business to
other members in the group
5. The reality is that most of the value is done "behind the scenes" and
most good business people are already doing the jist of this program. In
other words, it's good, perhaps, if you aren't feeling like you've been
effective in setting up synergistic business relationships with other
businesses to swap customers around. On the other hand, you can save
yourself a lot of time, trouble, money, and be much more effective by just
creating those relationships outside of such an organization...ie start
talking to commercial real estate agents, developers, etc... and set up your
own referral program and pay them commission for successful leads.

[WISPA] High quality LMR-400 cable

2007-07-30 Thread Javier Arigita
I am looking for a provider/manufacturer of high quality LMR-400 cables with
N-type connectors. We will probably use 1.5m cables. Do you have any on
mind?

Many Thanks
