Re: [WISPA] Equip Leasing

2008-10-30 Thread 3-dB Networks
Well I guess its 2 for it was an advertisement and 2 for it was not.

I apologize if it was viewed that way, I was really trying to point out that
Landmark is a local leasing company to us we have had great success with,
and have directed other WISP's to.

I want to apologize though if it appeared I made an advertisement... and I
really don't want to start a thread or conversation on it one way or
another.

Thank You,

It describes in detail the various funding options out there and why you
should choose each option. It was written by Todd Bergstrom, the former
CEO

 If you go here

We have a link and some information about the company we used for our

If you need some Motorola gear for that financing, we may be able to work

[WISPA] Eavesdropping on wired keyboards

2008-10-30 Thread David Hulsebus

FYI From SANS NewsBites

--Researchers Read Electromagnetic Emanations From Wired Keyboards
(October 20 22, 2008)
Swiss researchers have demonstrated that keystrokes from wired keyboards
can be read remotely from distances of up to 20 meters. The keyboards
emit electromagnetic waves. The researchers at Security and
Cryptography Laboratory at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne have
described four different methods of eavesdropping on keystrokes on wired
keyboards.

Are both ends StarOS? If so, I would be happy to look at it for you

If only one end is StarOS, I would still look at it, but am less

Hi All,

I have a StarOS system that's running slow. It's probably an interference
issue but I'm not good enough with these units to figure out what channels
to use based on scans etc. I'd also like some help with tweaks etc.

Who would be a good consultant or operator to hire to help with this?

This is somewhat urgent. I've tried to fix it myself a couple of times now
and I'm not doing much good.

Thanks,

 Ladies and Gentlemen,

A few weeks ago (years in some cases, hi Travis!) there was discovered a
random disconnect issue between Tranzeo CPE and Mtik APs.

First it was prism vs atheos (no, that was not it)
Then it was tranzeo CPE are terrible. Yadda Yadda (no that is not it
either as even MTIK CPE were seing this, although not as often)
Then it was you must have some power issue with the boards browning out
on the routeros board you are using (nope, not that either)
Someone even threw in Pluto is mad that it is not a planet any more.
(Pluto is now considered the largest member of a distinct population
 called the Kuiper belt http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuiper_belt.)
Even I said it was not an issue and hey they just disconnect a few
times a day.. who cares! (whoops! talk to my P** off customers!)
Even Marlon the strange wizard from the far side of the mountains said
the Tranzeo CPE were to blame (he convinced me to use Tranzeo over
 SmartBridges! Thank Goodness!)
Travis from Idaho posted a forum entry here for Mtik to ignore or scoff
 at: (Hi Uldis!) http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=7t=24971

I emailed Damian and another gentleman from Tranzeo privately and said
WTF kids? I did some network sniffing for them and was able to give
EXACT details about what was happening, when and how.

We (Tranzeo and I, mostly Damian) opened a ticket with Mtik
 (Ticket#2008091666000531):

Tranzeo laid out a packet sniff from Network Instruments Wireless
Observer along with my wireshark packet sniff showing in brief that
the Mtik AP was throwing out random zeros in it's beacon frame
timestamp. They stated that when a zero is recieved, the CPE are to
assume that there is a change in the settings of the wireless AP and
they should disconnect and reaquire. (think of this as an INSTANT
change from 802.11b to 802.11b/g and all your clients disconnect and
reconnect, because, well, there is a change in the AP's
capabilities. This is reasonable reaction to a notification of a
change of settings.

Mtik replied with IEEE Std 802.11-2007 section 11.1.1.1 (located
here if you have trouble sleeping:
*YAWN* let me tell you, this explains why wireless engineers are who
they are.. whoa!) Mtik continued and said that the wording of this
standard allowed for a timestamp of zero sent from the AP and
basically the CPE should deal with it and play through.

Damian learned some Latvian so he could swear in a diffrent language
than Canadian. Honestly, he likes to be legal in APs etc and just
cannot see why us ULS users would flaunt the FCC _and_ put up with
these Mtik bugs. I mentioned something under my breath regarding
CPQs and firware updates about 3 years ago...

The nice gentleman engineer at Tranzeo placed some virtual CPE on a
bench facing a Mtik AP and was able to reproduce the issue. He then
released to me some very alpha firmware that would email him with a
warning whenever a CPQ saw a zero frame.

[WISPA] FCC licensing

Hi,

What is the required notification distance on 18ghz licensing? I have
a tower with 18ghz links, and just found a new tower that went up about
20 miles away with 18ghz and yet I never received notification. Is there
a certain distance that they don't notify?

Also, how does one go about finding if a 18ghz or 11ghz link has been
licensed with the FCC?

thanks,

Did you do all the licensing yourself? Most smaller operators tend to
just let someone else handle the paperwork; if you go that route,
chances are that firm, not you, got any licensing notifications.

Re: [WISPA] Equip Leasing

2008-10-30 Thread Tom DeReggi
Also don't forget property tax.

A dollar buyout, usually means the buyer owns it, and the purchase is subject
to personal property tax. (which in our county comes close to 3% per year).
In a Fair Market Value Lease buyer does not need to pay PPT.

Note: In FMV leases the Leasor may not necessarilly pay PPT either, because PPT
is usually paid on assets that reside in the state the tax is applicable. As
well, with dollar Buyout, buyers may not necessarilly pay PPT if equipment is
deployed in a state that does not charge/assess PPT on wireless infrastructure.

PPT can be a huge burden on how a WISP needs to tracks its purchases. What
General Ledger account purchases apply to for PPT purposes would be different
depending on what state the equipment would be used in. The risk is... If you
don't report PPT on your purchases, it brings up a flag, that you likely would
have sold it instead, and be applicable for Sales Tax, which is higher. Tax
Auditors don;t really understand that WISPs exist with the situation that all
purchased owned property, might actually be NON-Taxable because of special
provision made so WISPs don't have to pay PPT on those assets.

So FMV leasing gets rid of all that tracking headache. We personally prefer $1
Buyout, but it does create challenges for PPT tracking.

  Marlon,

The difference with fair market value leasing is that you get to deduct the
full amount of each monthly payment because it's a true lease... so you don't
have to depreciate the equipment and deal with tax law changes every year and
wonder if you are going to be over or under the limit, etc.

Some leases are going to work better for some companies than others. This
year, because of tax law changes for 2008, we actually will bump right up
against the new limit of taking the full deduction on our equipment purchases.

Check with your accountant on which type of lease is best for your company.

Actually,

3dbnetwork's post was appropriate because

The link was to a helpful FAQ on leasing. (They aren;t a leasing company,
they are an equipment seller). The information learned from that link could

Stupid me, I forgot to even look for the simple stuff. This site is always
picking up nasty interference and I had changed out 2 other ap's recently.
If I'd have looked at my usage graphs I'd have seen that someone picked up a
virus or something this last Sunday afternoon. They burnt through 90 gigs
of traffic since then. Blocked the customer and everyone else seems to be
fine now.

Thanks again Justin!

 hi Marlon,

I don't know of any paid StarOS consultants. (I get most of my ideas
from the StarOS forum at www.staros.com)

Are both ends StarOS? If so, I would be happy to look at it for you
for free. (but I would only grade myself B based on my two years of
using staros -- there are several very sharp people on the forum)

If only one end is StarOS, I would still look at it, but am less

I'd argue probably not a lot. (Due to potential fines from the FCC if
reported). But I'd argue it would be likely to occur more frequently, now
that Licesned equipment has come down so much in price, and becomming more
mainstream use, and newbies might feel compelled to perform RD, before
putting up the licensing cash. (even though there are experimental licensing

Did you do all the licensing yourself? Most smaller operators tend to
just let someone else handle the paperwork; if you go that route,
chances are that firm, not you, got any licensing notifications.

2008-10-30 Thread Scottie Arnett
Who is to blame for this all you can eat fiasco? My guess would be AOL back in
the dialup days. I just can't seem to believe that the telco's followed suit,
of course back then, the FCC rules were a little different.

I guess the buffet has spread over to the broadband times. Not much you could
do on dial-up at buffet level..when all speeds were basically the same and you
could guess at bandwidth based on the amount of backbone bandwidth you had
available compared to ports, but now it makes it hard to predict usage levels
if you have various bandwidth plans.

I think some applications have bypassed the amount of bandwidth we have
available to us to stay in business. Of course, I operate in BFE where a 2XT1
cost over $1300/mth. The FCC thinks these new apps foster innovation...but it
just spreads the digital divide even further IMHO.

I think the problem is until the big boys change, us little guys can't
change to a metered system. Right now cable, DSL, licensed WiMax, etc.
are all unlimited usage. There is no way I could change to a pay per
byte model without losing a ton of customers.

Exactly. For those imposing bit caps where is the bit cap at? Here
comcast is doing a 250GB bit cap then you here some of there customers
whining how thats not fair. No way I can afford a 250GB per month
user.

 Hi,

Changing the country code is the same as buying the Custom Frequency
 license.

What does your power output table show on the AP and CPE side? What
 kind
 of signals are you getting?

In order to use 3663 MHz you must set the card for 5770 MHz and 5770

 selecting a
different country other than the good old USA would allow you to
 select the
5770 Mhz frequency. This is true and we used the Germany 5ghz ptp
 setting
for country and we now have the needed 5770 Mhz frequency available
 for
selection. So now I am starting to wonder if this may be the reason
 we are
getting less than anticipated results with signal levels. So now
 finally the
real question I am asking; is there really a difference between
 purchasing a
special frequency license from MT and using the cheat of selecting a
different country in order to select 5770 Mhz? Isn't 5770 Mhz still
 5770 Mhz
  no matter what?

Re: [WISPA] MikroTik and UBQ XR3

2008-10-30 Thread Sales
Oh Wow. That was good reading. Especially about the offset. I had no idea my
XR9 Cells was losing 10db of signal out of the default MT setup. I made the
manual adjustments and some of those questionable links shaped right up :)

Thanks!

Also, when working with UBNT cards and Mikrotik, be sure you are
adjusting for correct power settings. See
 http://www.ubnt.com/downloads/ubi_mtik_power.pdf for a pretty thorough
 explanation.
