In case you did not know, recently NetFlix and Microsoft teamed up to
provide video on-demand services to all of the XBox 360 users. Not only
can you start one of 12,000 videos in a matter of seconds on your
computer, but you can also do this right on your Xbox 360, bringing it
mainstream for many who have never used it. Not to mention the super
low cost of basically $9 bucks a month!

I have been using it for a few weeks and since it came out on the XBox
360 last Wednesday, I have streamed GIGs. Soon as you hear, gigs, you
may be interested to know what is required to maintain a high-end video
stream. So, I put together some numbers for everyone, in case you are
interested in how much bandwidth this service uses! A

You can see my data at http://www.linktechs.net/netflix.asp. Feel free

I'm not sure they have a determined peering policy yet. I've had

Almost all is port 80 and the worst part is this rule comes after my

As Tom noted... why can't manufacturers put hardware on their devices
to attach them to a rope, lanyard, etc. for you to lift the item and
 secure it during installation?

If not dedicated hardware, what about a hole to insert reusable hardware
for this purpose? Cheap to implement, very useful in the field.

I'm afraid of it falling when holding a $7k Orthogon radio on a tower.
It's not like my Nextel and will survive the fall!

Re: [WISPA] wireless mesh recommendations for extreme weatherconditions?

I helped design a network that worked through a hurricane out on the barrier
islands near NC. We did NOT use adhoc but rather put in ptp or ptmp
stations. It was pretty amazing to see video feeds from inside the
hurricane. Cool stuff.

We used mainly Zcomax gear at the time. Just off the shelf stuff.

Let me know if I can be of help. Maybe I can get lucky and find the guy
that actually built if for you.

Subject: [WISPA] wireless mesh recommendations for extreme
weatherconditions?

Can anyone recommend a wireless mesh vendor (and associated brackets and
antennas) that would undergo extreme weather conditions?

A really good friend from university works in a hurricane research group
and is looking wireless communication devices that they can put on top
of these 30m ad hoc mobile research towers that they place in the middle
 of hurricanes for monitoring.

He told me the distances that they want to get (1+ mi), and I told him
that from a link budget perspective, this was a piece of cake on 2.4/5.8
Wi-Fi bands, and as long as he could be assured that the radio and the
radio accessories could stay on the mobile unit and have a good source
of power, we'd most likely be okay (these mobile units apparently have
 great backup batteries).

Right now, they're looking at cellular coverage, but the distances that
they want to do aren't that far, and they like the idea of building a
backbone in these emergency situations which might also be used to
converge other services on, particularly when the cellular network is
 unstable in hurricane environments.

Any help or pointers on this would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, Limelight is one of the largest content delivery networks there is...
their client list is a mile long.

A significant number of downloads and streaming media come Limelight,
Akamai, and similar networks.

Almost all is port 80 and the worst part is this rule comes after my

 Hi,

So I grabbed all of Limelight Networks' IP blocks and created a queue on

my MT core router. I am currently seeing about 8-9Mbps upload with only

a 500kbps download. Any idea why I would be seeing so much upload

traffic (coming from 10-15 different customers)?

In case you did not know, recently NetFlix and Microsoft teamed up to

provide video on-demand services to all of the XBox 360 users. Not only

can you start one of 12,000 videos in a matter of seconds on your

computer, but you can also do this right on your Xbox 360, bringing it

mainstream for many who have never used it. Not to mention the super

low cost of basically $9 bucks a month!

I have been using it for a few weeks and since it came out on the XBox

may be interested to know what is required to maintain a high-end video

stream. So, I put together some numbers for everyone, in case you are

While those claims may look okay, and their brackets look okay, I'm

[WISPA] New Vendor Member - SecurAlign

2008-11-29 Thread Rick Harnish
I would like to welcome Layne Christenson and SecurAlign as our newest WISPA
vendor member. Below is a company bio.

Thanks,

Rick Harnish

SecurAlign began building the LT-18 solid reflector for Canopy radios in
early 2003 under the name Layne Tool Company.

Layne Tool was building the LT-18 reflector as a high quality, low priced
alternative to the Canopy 27RD. Motorola engineers liked features of the
LT-18 design and considered switching from the 27RD. After two months of
testing Motorola decided to continue with the 27RD because of the lower gain
of the LT-18 and costs and effort associated with FCC compliance for a new
product. Layne Tool then began selling the LT-18 exclusively through
distributors. The LT-18 sold well for about three years. Sales began to slow
down due to the large markup by the distributors and the availability of
other competing reflectors. In mid-2007 the decision was make to sell
directly to WISPs under the new name SecurAlign. Along with the new company
name came an improved design for the LT-18. Early in 2008 the MAX Dish was
introduced as a higher gain alternative to the LT-18 as well as the more
expensive 27RD. The MAX Dish also has additional features not found on any
other solid dish antenna. See the SecurAlign website
http://www.securalign.com/ www.securalign.com for product features and
ordering info.

By selling directly to WISPs SecurAlign can offer the best products at the
lowest wholesale pricing. SecurAlign's mission is to build products of the
highest quality and performance and sell at the lowest prices possible.

[WISPA] stopgap for congested wi-fi channel

2008-11-29 Thread Rogelio
When you have a noise floor of -30 dBm to -50dBm on a 2.4/5.8 11a/b GHz

alleviate the problem other than switch channels, use narrower beam
antennas, etc.

That's actually a good point.

So, if you're going to protect gear in a hurricane, it becomes important
to put the gear in some sort of other protective enclosure.

While just about any radio could be protected, what do you do about
antennas? They (particular omnis) must stick out and be exposed in
order to work properly.

Well, speaking as one of the most experienced wireless
interference-reduction specialists in the broadband wireless industry
(and also one of the most humble)...

No, there's not much you can do except possibly to deploy more access
points (or wireless nodes) closer to your end-users. You will have to do
this in a way that does not increase the level of inter-access point or
inter-node interference.

My recommendation is to either a) call in an experienced wireless
professional for advice, or b) ask the kid next door who knows
wireless because he deployed a wireless router in his bedroom.
