Re: [WISPA] ANOTHER Apex firmware upgrade problem

2010-06-26 Thread Travis Johnson
Yes, we see 6-8db fluctuations during temperature changes... but that's
an 18ghz frequency thing, not specific to Trango. We also saw the same
changes with our Dragonwave 18ghz links.

2010-06-26 Thread Scott Carullo
Make sure you don't use RPS, the ports will not come back up once they
drop. Confirmed with Trango support this is a problem still. Other than
that ours are working nicely, and the ATPC and modulation shifting are
doing excellent. Other than that we are still getting use to the APEX gear
but are happy so far with the performance... ~250MB FDX almost 25 miles.
Modulation has dropped in rain but link never stopped passing traffic.
Looks like its more sensitive to temp inversion fluctuations than 5Ghz but
one side is at 1200ft so it may have something to do with that as its
higher than we have ever put gear around here.

Good luck fixing your problem, report back once you figure it out.

Hi,

During the upgrade process, did it give any errors? You did all 4 or 5
files, correct? Have you tried doing them again and re-flashing each one
as you go?

I will look into a tour for the arch. However, I wouldn't want to miss any
of those infamous vendor parties; at least to the level a light weight can
bear.

I am looking forward to meeting the cast of characters. It will be an
ordeal ripping this country boy away for a trip to the city.

Have I mentioned I've gotten comfortable here the past five years? I will
have to find a trained monkey to fill in for me.

Mike,

I haven't organized any trips like an arch tour or a trip to a Cardinals
game. I would suggest doing either on Tuesday or Thursday evening before or
after the event. I have heard some talk about going to a game. I would
love someone stepping in to organize an extracurricular activity as I know I
won't have time.

Thank and I look forward to meeting you. It seems like we already have.

Thanks,

I've decided I'm going to St. Louis. Who is going where it would be
convenient to arrive together? Too close to fly.  Kinda like my generation;
too young for Woodstock, too old for Sesame Street.

I hope someone has an arch tour in the works; I'd do that if time allows.

STP was enabled. I also couldn't think of a place for a L2 loop
to exist. Doesn't mean there wasn't one. CDP was disabled.

I punted.

We happened to have our first RB750G test unit show up yesterday.
I put it at the tower and brought up OSPF from the office to the
RB750G across the ubiquity link. Then I configured the necessary
static routes on the RB750G. Looks good for the most part. We
have much better throughput and latency.

I do have one left over problem. We have a StarOS vtun from the
office to the OSPF network we are merging in 4 (OLSR) wireless hops
away. The tunnel has always been a bit flakey, but now, it doesn't
seem to want to pass traffic for very long. It stayed up for the
longest period while I had a ping per second running across the
link for a couple of hours. But shortly after I kill the ping, it
fell down again. StarOS 1.4.22mumble.

I don't have enough data to know if the vtun forgets to pass traffic
when it goes "idle" or if it was just luck. StarOS never recognizes
that the tunnel is broken. It just doesn't pass IP. Nothing in
the logs.

We have a handful of vtuns to provide redundant paths across the
OLSR wireless net to non-wireless gear which cannot speak OLSR in
various locations. They've always been a bit of a pain. They take
minutes to fail down which slows OSPF routing around the problem.
But, now I'm fed up. It's not ubiquitous enough
for a multi-vendor ISP network.

And it's cost me half of Field Day weekend... That's the last straw.

OLSR must die!!!

Not really; in the next paragraph, I'm referring to rules that were
intended for WISPs.  It is a truism that receivers aren't regulated;
the FCC has not disclaimed the right to regulate them. They claim a
lot of authority. They sometimes use it to try to choose winners and losers.

Power limits are on the table, both for Part 15 and for Part 90
(3650). Not to mention white spaces, where current rules (like
antenna height) make it almost useless.

Balanced ERP makes sense for symmetric bandwidth. There's no one
right answer for all kinds of systems. The FCC rules seem to assume
two types of systems, one a true symmetric PtP, the other an omni or
wide-sector PtMP access point/user network. But when I need to do a
symmetric backbone feed to two nodes which are 10 degrees of azimuth
apart, does sharing a radio at the common point really make it PtMP,
and potentially force me to use two antennas? Sometimes the rules
result in silly results. And the tech guys at the FCC aren't the silly ones.

I'm currently working on a Petition, with a lot of my clients as
members of the signatory Coalition, on the topic of ASR order
processes. (I want the ILEC to provide a price quote and escape
button with the Firm Order Commitment, so there are no surprises when
the bill comes.) I'm not spending my own money on a wireless issue,
unless it directly impacts my clients. I'm just noting that it seems
ripe for clarification, because the markets and technology have moved
quite a bit since the rules were written.

Re: [WISPA] Network Redesign

2010-06-26 Thread Jeromie Reeves
We use 10./8 for the network. Then, route single publics out to the
end points (yes, the 10's show up in public trace routes and time out,
shoot me!) PPPoE would take care of that and was the plan to move to.
MT has not implemented pppoe forwarding as
yet, so we have a choice of having many concentrator points, or
dumping 30 MT routers for something else. Both are less then ideal
options. For now, 1:1 NAT at the core gateway and routing publics
works. We also route the inside client networks, Only 1 point of NAT.
