Re: [WISPA] your thoughts on opps in Africa?

2008-09-08 Thread Jeff Ehman
We do some business there but are very careful with every transaction. Cash up
front most of the time. I think that is the main theme here. Just go in
understanding the many unknowns, be cautious and don't get too involved until
real money can be confirmed.

That being said, no one can argue that the opportunities are huge in
underdeveloped economies if you can find the right partner/customer.

I have a good sized customer in Africa. Their network has been built
steadily over time, and I've met the principle on several occasions. We've
done lots of smaller projects, but always on a cash basis.

Exactly the same experience here. Lots of talk, long-winded network design,
layout, and bidding process with numerous tweaks and revisions, and
ultimately nothing. Complete waste of time for us, but I don't see what

Is it just me, or do African wireless opportunities rarely materialize?

I've been involved in tons and tons of big ($10+M, in theory) projects
where all sorts of big numbers are thrown out, but for whatever reason,
someone never ultimately pulls the trigger.

(Not sure what I'm missing, but this seems to be a running theme with
African projects I've ever gotten pulled in on.)

Re: [WISPA] Wimax world news?

2008-10-08 Thread Jeff Ehman
WiMAX World was a bunch of mobile pipedream stuff with an emphasis on in the
clouds technology roadmaps, haha.

What most people got out of WiNOG was the ability to speak with other operators
ACTUALLY deploying 3.65 gear. Can't really describe the good parts, except for
getting Redline and Aperto's full attention for 2 days instead of being
attacked by 300 vendors.

I think everyone in our industry is aware of the benefit of 3.65 being open
spectrum and the ability for high quality service due to WiMAX's QoS
capabilities. Only time will tell with which manufacturer will win your hearts
but the mobile stuff that WiMAX World spoke about is not it at this point.

Hi,

Has anyone heard of or used products by Radwin (www.radwin.com)?

I understand they are releasing the Radwin 2000 series of 5.x GHz
point-to-point links in the US in November.

The price is very attractive.

My main concern is performance reliability. We can test the
performance within a short period of time, but not the reliability
(would need to have the link up for a while to do that). We are
considering these for a critical 2 mi. link.

Thanks,

Re: [WISPA] Vecima 3.65

2008-12-14 Thread Jeff Ehman
We are going to test this for ourselves but it is our understanding that all
3.65 WiMAX Forum Certified equipment is interoperable but only to a certain
extent. From what I understand, Redline Base Stations and Tranzeo CPE will
work together but only on a best effort basis. All QoS functionality is
proprietary. If you are just providing data services that should not be an
issue though.

Once again, this is theory. I do not know of anyone who has actually tried out
a system using Redline Base Stations and another manufacturer's CPE.

Thinking about it more though, the cost of the cable fluctuates a lot with the
price of the commodity. Purchasing becomes a big pain sometimes so I think
there may be some cash in it. I think a lot of us would like to know what you
get for it.

Re: [WISPA] Credit Card Processors

2009-12-15 Thread Jeff Ehman
Sorry for bringing up an old topic but I thought about it last night and it
should be touched on. We are all in extremely commoditized industries where
margins are thin and streamlined operations are a key to success. In these
types of businesses, every little bit counts. Finding a one size fits all
solution that will take over a space doesn't happen overnight (if ever). What
makes a business truly stand out is doing a million little things better than
the competition.

So, $500.00 is not something that is going to make any of us rich, but if you
can find $500 savings or improvements in places that your competition hasn't
thought of, it really starts to add up.

Exactly how close is close when you mention pricing between the two

Re: [WISPA] Need 18ghz link

2009-02-12 Thread Jeff Ehman
Only half of the truth.

Was the quote less... yes. Is it related to the conversation right now (i.e.
Apex line vs. Dragonwave)... no.

NOT APPLES TO APPLES.

The particular quote was for a Trango GIGA line, not APEX (need for T-1 ports).
In order to get the reliability needed, we had to quote a higher dish size
with the GIGA because of modulation issues. The GIGA line will bring down the
throughput during rain in order to keep the link going but not automatically
bring it back to normal speeds. It is a brief time period but you have to
bring the link down in order to fix it and up to +300mbps again. Because this
customer has HIGH SLAs we had to be very careful that the link didn't go down.
With a comparable Dragonwave, we were able to quote a smaller dish size due to
automatic modulation. So, because of the raw cost of smaller dishes and then
leasing costs of less space due to smaller dishes, the Dragonwave quote came in
lower. This is an exception and not a rule.

If it were not for the need of the T-1 ports, everything would have been normal
pricing because the APEX line does speed up without the need of bringing the
link down. This is the most popular option right now so there is a little
misunderstanding.

APPLES TO APPLES, the Trango APEX product will be 10-20% lower cost. Bottom
line.

2009-03-06 Thread Jeff Ehman
You can find good quality outdoor cable that is certified for UV protection and
harsh weather conditions (last WAY over 3 years). A lot of people I have
talked to are not fully aware of the different types of cable available and
just go to a Belden rep somewhere. It can be pretty confusing and they
overcharge all the time. It really isn't their fault, but I don't think they
fully understand cable manufacturing. Most of the electrical distribution guys
just buy small amounts of Cat5 for people in their area. It isn't a large part
of their business so it isn't top of mind share.

I have had a few customers look at us crosswise. A couple
have even asked for wall plates, or had us install ethernet
jacks. We'll do this if asked, but I don't carry
  the parts with me.

I also try REALLY hard to NOT put any ethernet wall plates
in. I don't want the extra connection in a poe
situation. It's probably fine, but as an ex lineman I
know that connections are almost always the reason for a
failure so I want the fewest possible.

We try to hide all cable as much as possible, we ask for a
vacuum to clean up any drillings, we do NOT leave the little
ends from the cat5 crimps laying around - not even outside.

Hell, until recently we always ran indoor WHITE cat 5
cable. People REALLY liked that, I have just gotten tired
of cables with water in them. Luckily it seems to almost
exclusively happen at my towers not at the customer's
sites. It's usually cheap and easy to replace the bad
cable and ruined poe. But I hate service calls!

Sure wish I could find a double insulated white cable to

[WISPA] High Throughput Licensed vs. Unlicensed

2009-04-10 Thread Jeff Ehman
All,

This post is for those looking at putting in high throughput unlicensed radios.
I can talk all day about the advantages of licensed (guarantee of 35-40db fade
margin for starters) but I want to throw out some real world numbers I am
seeing. Don't get me wrong, there is always a place for unlicensed radios
(speed to deploy...licensed takes 4-6 weeks to build, and you can move the
radios without relicensing) but there are other options on the high capacity
side right now. Check out everything below because the pricing for licensed
has come down tremendously over the years. Just something to mull over this
weekend.

THIS IS ALL IN APPLES TO APPLES.

~110mbps Licensed Radio
Radio + 2 foot dished + Coordination = $9,995.00
FCC Fees = $650 per side = $1,300.00
2 Power Supplies and 2 POE Adaptors = ~$638.00
TOTAL PRICE ALL IN = ~$11,933.00

~150mbps Unlicensed Radio
150mbps Connectorized Radio Link = ~$11,000
Dual Pol Antennas + Coax Jumpers = ~$400.00
TOTAL PRICE ALL IN = $11,400.00

Re: [WISPA] High Throughput Licensed vs. Unlicensed

2009-04-10 Thread Jeff Ehman
150 is half duplex, so not this one. I should have specified that. Looking
back, to really get a true comparison you would have to look at the 300mbps
full which comes out to about 14k street. The licensed is FDX at 110mbps. So,
this actually makes the case stronger for the licensed radio. Save about 2k.

I believe the full (300mbps) spectrum cost is 30MHz. I assume the cost for the
licensed link doesn't really matter but it is somewhere around 40-50MHz.

All,

This post is for those looking at putting in high throughput unlicensed
radios. I can talk all day about the advantages of licensed (guarantee of
35-40db fade margin for starters) but I want to throw out some real world
numbers I am seeing. Don't get me wrong, there is always a place for
unlicensed radios (speed to deploy...licensed takes 4-6 weeks to build, and
you can move the radios without relicensing) but there are other options on
the high capacity side right now. Check out everything below because the
pricing for licensed has come down tremendously over the years. Just
something to mull over this weekend.

THIS IS ALL IN APPLES TO APPLES.

~110mbps Licensed Radio
Radio + 2 foot dished + Coordination = $9,995.00
FCC Fees = $650 per side = $1,300.00
2 Power Supplies and 2 POE Adaptors = ~$638.00
TOTAL PRICE ALL IN = ~$11,933.00

~150mbps Unlicensed Radio
150mbps Connectorized Radio Link = ~$11,000
Dual Pol Antennas + Coax Jumpers = ~$400.00

Re: [WISPA] High Throughput Licensed vs. Unlicensed

2009-04-10 Thread Jeff Ehman
Since it is Friday and I am bored

Here's some interesting points

11 GHz Licensed Radio
- 220 Mb (110 FD): -76 dBm

PTP600
- 300 Mb (150 FD): -59.1 dBm
- 200 Mb (100 FD): -68.1 dBm

12 Mile Shot - Availability for both systems using 2' dishes is 99.999% -- but
we may need larger dishes for 5 GHz to account for interference and noise
(while in the licensed band, interference and noise doesn't exist)

Assuming no noise for PTP600
- 2' (28 dBi) Dishes on both sides - Aggregate Throughput - 200.68 Mb
(~100 Mb Full Duplex)
- 4' (34 dBi) Dishes on both sides - Aggregate Throughput - 287.69 Mb
(~140 Mb Full Duplex)

Now, since the PTP600 requires 30 MHz of spectrum and BOTH polarities, it's
safe to assume that generally speaking, we should plan for a minimum thermal
noise floor of -80 dBm - adding that into the equation, our calculation now
shows the following
- 2' (28 dBi) Dishes on both sides - Aggregate Throughput - 109.03 Mb
(~50 Mb Full Duplex)
- 4' (34 dBi) Dishes on both sides - Aggregate Throughput - 197.61 Mb
(~100 Mb Full Duplex)

11 GHz Licensed Radio (no noise to worry about)
- 2' (34.3 dBi) Dishes on both sides - Aggregate Throughput - 220 Mb (110
Mb Full Duplex)

*NOTE: Licensed radios transmit and receive on SEPARATE frequencies...so round
trip latency is ~0.4 milliseconds (~400 microseconds) per hop

Now, let's look at cost
PTP600 with 2' Dual Pol antennas and misc stuff: $14k
PTP600 with 4' Dual Pol antennas and misc stuff: $16k
Licensed Radio with 2' Dishes (Software Upgradable to 300 Mb Full Duplex) and
FCC License: $12k

From what I understand the PTP600 is an OFDM best effort radio. If
the RF
environment is favorable then it will pass data. If not then it slows
down and/or starts dropping packets.

I believe the PTP600 is also a HDX radio, is it not? Not trying to be

can produce 150Mbpd FDX as reliable as a licensed radio set.

Anyone have a PTP600 manual they can send me?

Travis, not everyone is in the middle of nowhere Idaho shooting from mountain
top to mountain top with very little noise over 1 75 mile hop :) I have a
feeling many people on this list would DIE for that kind of environment.

Now, I have to say there will always be a place for certain products to fit in
and admittedly my case was pretty general. On the flip side though, I think it
does pertain to a lot of [typical] situations we come across on a daily/weekly
basis. None of us can come up with a one size fits all because there will
always be those outside cases but we can generalize for certain scenarios. For
example, check out the post I just put up. Pretty standard 12 mile shot that
we messed around with. Predictably, the real killer is noise.

Jeff, I think you have made a fine point. I realized about a year ago
that with the cost of licensed links coming down, there wasn't a lot of
reason to look at the high-end UL radios anymore. When a StarOS or MT
setup will deliver 30-50meg of FD throughput at a very low cost, the
next logical step is to go with a 100MB licensed link.I have a
couple of my consulting clients that have been dumping their Moto BH
links in favor of StarOS because it is cheaper and quite a bit faster,
but we have also found a few situations where we need more speed, and
going licensed just makes way more sense than spending that much money
on a UL link.

I do see Travis's point about the longer range shots, however. I've
got a 35, 45 and 65 mile shots with StarOS and they work just fine but
only put out about 18-25meg at those distances. That's enough for me,
but I can see where you would want more capacity and I suppose that
within that narrow definition, a PTP600 would be better than a licensed
link.

really good there is no way to do that shot with 11ghz (believe

So, distance may be a limiting factor when considering licensed vs.
unlicensed. We won't talk about my 32 mile, 18ghz licensed link (using
 2ft dishes) with 99.99% reliability. ;)

There are some problems I see with the hotspot idea. First, this is an area
with people not used to high speed internet so I think it would be very tough
for them to figure out how to connect to the access point. Also, I would
assume that not too many people out there have a need for a laptop or travel
around with one if they do. Third, it would be much easier to make a simple
flyer and mail it then trying to buy/configure/install a wireless hotspot.

I got towers. Lots of them. Many don't have any kind
of wireless service anywhere close, some don't have any
kind of high speed service of any kind.

I would like to put up on some of them, for a fairly short
period of time, something like a hotspot, say a cheap router
that people can connect to, they see a splash page that says

If you are intersted in HIGH SPEED WIRELESS service, please
call 800-467-2346

Then we could log the calls, take their information, and if enough
calls were recieved we could start talking to WISPS in adjoining
areas to see if someone might be interested in providing service
there.

A market study if you will.

see one company mentioned that has deployed their WiMAX gear in the

What I do know is that according to ULS they have only been approved
to deploy a single Aperto radio. Further, at WiMAX World last year it
seemed that Zing's CTO was employed by Aperto in sales. Compare this

Imports cost us way more money. That may not directly affect any individual
consumer, but it does impact nearly every manufacturer. Cost of production
increases greatly. The only way they can make money is to increase their
prices to distributors who in turn have to raise the price to individual
consumers. It creates inflation.

Foreign goods (such as chips in our radios) will go up in dollar price.
Even food, natural gas, etc. can go up as those are priced on a global
market basis. If one Chinese yuan (or whatever they use) can buy two
bushels of wheat where it used to buy one, they can bid the price up on
wheat (maybe to 1.5 bushels for a yuan) and still come out ahead. We
Americans with our weak dollar then end up paying more (at the new
global price) for wheat. Likewise, if our coal can be shipped overseas
for a better price than what the producers can get on the American
market, the global price of coal then goes up, and we end up paying more
for electricity.

Suddenly we become an exporter again, our trade deficit starts to move
the opposite direction from what it has in recent years. Some problems
get better, others get worse.

The free market is an amazing thing. If we quit messing with it
artificially through stimulus and over-regulation, things normalize
quite a bit quicker than we might expect.

#1- Labor: There is very little skilled resources here.
#2- Funding: Especially for labor. Normal financing channels are
available but I will not take on too much debt at one time.
#3- Time: There is little extra time to dedicate towards expansion
 versus daily operations.

 Notes-
Employees: Too small to enjoy such a luxury.
Stimulus: I don't believe in it and did not apply.
Technologies: Proprietary equipment are a bit too expensive unless you
buy CPE in 100 packs. Even then, the AP's are still expensive.

Regardless of your tech choice -- Moto, 802.11-based, WiMAX or other, I
am interested to know what are the greatest barriers to growth and why?

 Some possibilities:
Is it funding and if so, are your normal channels for money frozen or
 otherwise gone?
Is it competition? If so, how specifically.
Are you constrained from hiring due to high cost of employee benefits
 (e.g. health insurance)?
Are you stalled waiting for response from your stimulus application?
Are you stalled trying to defend against someone else's stimulus
application that would include your market?
Are the current technologies too expensive or technicall inadequate to
deliver what you need to compete?

Ruckus Wireless. Hands down. Their smart antenna array, price point and
simple configuration/maintenance are unmatched. Plus, this pertains to larger
projects but if their controller goes down all the APs still broadcast! The
only functionality that goes away is support/maintenance but at least everyone
can still get on the internet.

recommend for a reliable AP for use inside a conference room for a business

What do you mean by a Ruckus box? Their APs go from a couple hundred up to
nearly 1k depending on the model. The controller starts just over 1k and goes
up to over 20k.

Re: [WISPA] Good reliable b/g/n inside AP

2010-05-24 Thread Jeff Ehman
I would not compare Ruckus to Ubiquiti and Engenius. That is like comparing a
Bobcat to a full blown Cat bulldozer. Sure they are considered mobile
construction equipment to move large piles of heavy scraps but they serve
completely different applications.

It is better to compare Ruckus to Cisco, Meru, Aruba ect... When looking at
the commercial grade products, Ruckus blows the competition out of the water.
You can put together a low cost solution together with Engenius and Ubiquiti
but support can be a nightmare and you will need to install, maintain and
configure FAR more access points per square foot.

Ruckus is a commercial grade product for commercial applications. When you
look at that price point, Ruckus uses less APs and comes in much lower than the
others.

Ruckus is way more expensive then Engenius or Ubiquiti. I think the
cheapest thing they have is ~$300. Gets pretty steep.

Subject: Re: [WISPA] Leasing Companies

I would recommend Peer to Peer lending options. (Google peer to peer
lending). They will end up being personal loans, and likely lower credit
lines, but there is a much higher chance of walking away with a loan, at a
reasonable rate.

If you meet the financial profile for leasing, Lease Corp of America has
some of the lowest rates. They do a lot of the Moto 1yr type leases. With
LCA it wont be an issue that you are leasing wireless gear, because they
do that all the time.

A couple tips on leasing

If you do less than 5 mil a year in revenue, or have less than 10 employee,
chances are your lease will be qualified by personal credit rating.
Most Leasing companies are clueless, and are incapable of making an
intelligent judgement on their own, and instead rely heavilly on standard
Credit Reports.
If your personal Credit Score is less than 700, or personal revolving credit
lines over 50% utilized, dont bother applying for a lease, you'll probably
get denied.. Work to improve credit score first.
The price quote you get for equipment (for example whether 30% below or
above market rate, whether a good or bad deal) will likely have very little
to do with your approval.
Approval is more about documentation. On paper, whether you look like a
low credit risk or not, using default common methods of valuing, without an
expanation needed.
My personal opinion is WISPs are likely better off working with a local
banks or private lenders, where they can meet underwriting decission makers
in person. WISPs appear like far less of a risk, when their business is
explained to the lender. That message will rarely get conveyed adequately to
behind the scene decission makers in traditional large leasing companies.
Avoid applying for a lease, unless you are confident that you will get
accepted, because everytime an inquirey is made on your credit report by a
lender, future lenders will question why you might have been turned down by
them, which brings up concern, and that inquirey will be on your record for
2 years, and nothing you can do about it. Even if you decided to turn down
the loan because you were offered loan shark rates. Leasers know who they
loansharks are, and if they made an inquirey, but you dont have a loan from
them, they now dont know whether you turned them down or they turned you
down. IF a loan shark wont lend to you, why should they? I've found
applying for leases to be a very delicate and unforgiving process. No one
has to convince me on value of leasing, I get it. Obviously, there are
numerous WISP Members that are successful at obtaining Leases. But what I'm
learning is that they are all more or less exactly the same, in regards to
methods they use to qualify/approve applicants. Although they may vary
drastically on how well they manage the loan/client experience or ethically
handle the application process, or what lease terms they'll extend.

Re: [WISPA] Extra jacketed CAT5e

2010-02-04 Thread Jeff Ehman
Double jacket cable comes in both indoor and outdoor. The difference between
the two is the mixed into compound. There are chemicals that make the PE UV
rated. They could both feel the exact same (durable and heavy) but one could
be indoor and crumble in a couple years from sun and one could be outdoor and
last for years. You really have to find a reliable supplier that will provide
information because many just think an aluminum foil shield makes it outdoor.
THIS IS FAR FROM THE CASE.

Just because it is heavy does not mean it will be good in the sun.

Kurt, We bought a box of Belkin outdoor a few years back and it turned

Re: [WISPA] Want to try a Ruckus home AP

2010-02-18 Thread Jeff Ehman
In general, the Ruckus product line is very inexpensive for access points.
Plus, their beamforming technology allows their product to use about 1/2 the
APs as their main competitors (Cisco...). This is accomplished because they
don't use the typical omni antenna that most do. The beamforming searches out
other Ruckus access points and creates a PtP link between them so the
throughput and connection between APs is much greater and they can be further
apart. When an omni is used to create connections between access points, they
have to be placed much closer together. Not to mention the channel bonding
they use for additional throughput.

You still need power to the AP but no need to run Cat5 through a building for
new locations. This takes some engineering and additional products but not
hard at all.

Any location under 4 APs though (should be most) you don't even need the

 the MediaFlex 2835. When I Google shopping'ed this I don't get a single hit
 - Your search - MediaFlex 2835 - did not match any products.. Does one
have to buy straight from Ruckus? There's a form to fill out for finding a
big dog value-added reseller but why wouldn't they just put a list of
their resellers on their site? So they can collect all my contact info and
then have follow up contact? I don't like it when our relationship has to
be on their terms. If I want follow-up presales communication I'll call
them. It almost seems like they don't want to sell them. The more obstacles
they put between me and the buy now button the less likely it is that I'm
 going to buy it.

Subject: [Motorola II] Taking a New Direction, Searching for New Opportunities

This is a short note to all of my Wireless Industry acquaintances and my former
coworkers.

As of Tuesday afternoon, February 23rd, 2010, I have reached an agreement to
terminate my employment contract with Great American Broadband. Great American
Broadband purchased my company in July, 2008. Unfortunately, continued
differences of opinions between corporate and myself have led to much
dissatisfaction for both parties.

One of the reasons, I wanted to remove myself from my Employment Contract was
that I see new opportunities abound with the Broadband Stimulus Package. I
felt the need to open myself up to these new opportunities instead of watching
them pass me by. I built a successful ISP/WISP since 1995 and have/had an
excellent staff. Their hard work allowed me to devote a lot of volunteer time
in co-founding and participating on the WISPA Board. I know I couldn't have
helped make WISPA what it is today without the assistance of my staff in my
business.

Sandi (my wife of 25 years) and I have both decided to leave employment with
GAB. While it is a scary time in our life, I believe a new opportunity or
opportunities will arise rather quickly. I believe that most of my
acquaintances in the industry know that I operate with a high level of
integrity and work ethic. I'm excited to find out whether others recognize and
value my abilities, reputation and commitment to the Broadband Industry.

I ask for your prayers as Sandi and I journey into this new uncharted
territory. I have never been unemployed and hopefully it won't last long.

One thought I have considered is making a proposal to the WISPA Board to become
the Executive Director for WISPA. I do many of those functions already and
enjoy working with the industry members.

I am no longer a principal member of WISPA with my release from GAB, but I have
joined WISPA as an Associate Member to finish out my term as President. I will
see what direction my new career leads me in the next few months before
deciding to continue on the Board or not.

I'm excited as I know there are better opportunities for myself and my family
than the circumstances I have been involved with the last couple years. I have
always been a self-employed entrepreneur until the GAB purchase. I thrive on
building and developing new business and opportunities and this has led to some
of my unhappiness recently. I say goodbye to my current staff with many
regrets and much pride.

So this is an invitation of sorts. I'm ready to travel, consult, investigate,
write, develop and explore new opportunities. I'm confident in my abilities,
my knowledge and my relationships to be successful whatever unfolds.

Respectfully,

Rick Harnish

Re: [WISPA] how to compete with $15 DSL

2010-03-25 Thread Jeff Ehman
Have you run through the numbers to see if the $15.00 is a sustainable model?
It seems like that is below cost or their break-even is years out. If that is
the case, they will run out of cash at some point or customers will get
terrible service when problems come up because the DSL company can't afford to
hire anyone. It will hurt you for now but if you look at the numbers and see
it isn't sustainable, I wouldn't worry too much.

Right now though, I would buckle down and run a campaign with all employees and
any marketing mean you have to take care of customers! If you take care of
your customers, it will be very tough for the competition to pick them up for a
cheaper price. Or, it will at least delay the process long enough for the DSL
provider to realize they can't sustain those prices...

If you find out it is sustainable, then look at possibly upgrading your network
or doing other revenue generating ideas that the DSL provider isn't. Upgrading
the network is a long process and very costly though. I would make VERY sure
that the DSL provider can keep that $15.00 forever before doing anything with
infrastructure.

Time Warner is a nightmare for a number of reasons...
They are still running docsis 2 for goodness sake.

While Docsis 2 was a great step forward over 1 - running @ 6.4MHz -
allowing for some pretty interesting speeds...
Docsis 3 is a huge step forward however - and would be a great deal
for Time Warner to put into place...

In short - Docsis 2 only allows support for 1 channel - thus a
throughput of 30.72Mbit/s - where as Docsis 3 allows for multiple
channels - and thus allows for each channel to push roughly 38mbps -
so - # of channels x 30Mbit/s is absolutely awesome

Not sure why they are not pushing this - ...

In short - with 4 downstream and 4 upstream channels - Docsis 3 gives
122.88 Mbit/s
with 8 channels down and 4 upstream - Docsis 3 gives 343Mbit/s down
and 122.88 up

Now if Comcast can do it - why cant Time Warner?

The one thing you need to look at though, is if they received funding to

I doubt Nano2s do layer 2 VLAN tagging but I don't have the experience to talk
that in-depth about it. There is probably a backdoor way (like Faisal talked
about) but I would just suggest a layer2/3 device that does it by port behind
the AP. You can find them pretty inexpensively.

I am making the assumption that you want the NANO to be Vlan Aware on

Re: [WISPA] Ubnt vs Moto vs ... your brand

2010-04-14 Thread Jeff Ehman
We have seen a lot of this actually. For small trailer parks or neighborhood
blocks that can't see a tower. Basically, have a Moto SM go to a rooftop that
can reach the AP and then put a NS2 behind it pointing in the direction of a
group of houses that you normally can't see. Put the NS2 in AP mode and reach
an addition 5-10 customers. The cost of a Moto AP may not justify adding a
small 5-10 customers but the NS2 makes a little more sense.

I personally wouldn't recommend this because network management can become a
huge PITA but for smaller SPs every dollar increase matters.
