Re: [WISPA] VoIP Vendor Recommendation

2017-03-13 Thread Joey Craig
We are back online as of this time. Momentum claims they fixed their
problem this morning, (which there was a problem). Still not working on our
end. After plugging one of the VoIP phones into a Comcast circuit, it came
right online. They logged into the the logs on the phone and found that the
gateway was reporting as a routed public IP through our core router to a
customer on our network.

I ran a packet capture at the customers router as well as our core router
(both Mikrotik units) and don't see why this is happening. Since then, we
turned off all routes for this public IP and rebooted both routers, problem
went away. Enabled all routes and watching now for over an hour, everything
is working properly.

Any ideas? May need to post on MT groups instead, but was giving everyone
an update.

[WISPA] Solution to Regulate Video Streaming?

My employer is looking for a solution to monitor, regulate and bill for
video streaming to the customer if he/she goes over a predetermined amount

Let me take this into a greater amount of detail:-

There are 'Public Peering Exchanges', these are either operated by a
ColoFacility Owner or an independent entity.

e.g. Telx (Telx Internet Exchange) (http://tie.telx.com)
Anyone can purchase a 1gig port or a 10gig port connection to the TIE
Peering Fabric.
There is a cost attached for this, and in case of Telx, it is paid to Telx.

Once one is connected to a Peering Fabric such as this on.. then one is free
to peer with anyone who wishes to peer with them at this Peering Fabric.

Netflix, is present at a number of these peering points, and at these
peering points, there is no minimum traffic level requirement from them
==

The other type of peering would be if one was to Build a transport
Connection to the Entity (Netflix e.g.), and have netflix allocate a port on
their router, to have dedicated private peering.

This would need to be negotiated with them, and would very likely carry
minimum traffic level requirement.

I believe this option is great if you are an isp utilizing 10g connections
to the net.

For most of us, connecting via a Public Peering Exchange is the most
economically feasible option.

Regards.

Sorry for the late reply.

We have a 1G connection to the TIE.
Peering with Netflix over a peering exchange does not have any traffic
requirements.

You're going to get a bunch of people bashing the tests, but there's
generally a reason for a low number. It very well could be nothing on your
network, but it's still a problem that needs to be addressed, especially if
that is a common testing point in your area.

A congested peering point could be to blame.

We mostly deal with business customer and guarantee bandwidth to customers.
We validate the bandwidth using IPERF from a Linux server off of our BGP
edge routers down to the customer and IPERF always shows the customer
getting the bandwidth they signed up for. We use QoS to control bandwidth
and make sure to not oversubscribe any one linksmall ratios of 3:1.

Of course eventually at some point the customer runs one of those stupid
bandwidth test on the Internet and the results are woefully inaccurate (not
in our favor)...but of course customers take the results as gospel.
AAA!

It's not our internet connections, we have three 100Mbps BGP links and none
of them run at more then 50% during peak loads.

Has anyone else found those Internet speed test to be woefully inaccurate?
Or is something else going on that I'm missing?

Thanks,
Bret

How can you guarantee ANYTHING beyond your network? You are absolutely in

Subject: [WISPA] Internet Speed test..are they inaccurate with wireless?

Thanks,
Bret

Re: [WISPA] Ubiquiti and thunderstorm issue

2012-07-16 Thread Joey Craig
Has happened to us several times over the past 2 years.

Just figured the static from the lightning messed with the radio. We have
tried doing the firmware recovery procedure, but the problem continued even
on the bench testing. It acted like someone plugged their router in
backwards.

Finally decided to just throw them in the trash figuring lightning damage
was not covered under the warranty. We never investigated it any further.

This has also occurred with NS2 and NSM365.
The network is running really slow to no internet for customers after a
lighting storm rolls thru. Ping an AP on the network and you get 2 reply
then 2 timeouts 2 reply 2 timeouts repeatedly. Looking at the ARP table of
the Mikrotik router for that network and one MAC is registered to a lot of
ip addresses belonging to other equipment on the network (The device also
announces that it owns the gateway also). Locate the device for that mac and
log into that device, (keeping deleting the arp tables entries in order to
get there) and Disable the LAN interface. I ARP stealing stops. Replacing
the radio is the long term fix.
This has happened quite a few times after lightning storms and across all
the different devices made by Ubiquiti. Reloading or upgrading firmware has
no effect. Today we had one on one network and two on a different network.
With two of them it was even harder to fix. Had to MAC access deny the
radios to get service restored on the network.

Are we the only one with this issue? Has some one else had this issue and
found a fix?

All,

If you feel you could benefit from a SOHO router with built in POE, built in
ATA or both, please email me on or off list with your comments and opinions.
What are you currently using for ATA/POE, what percentage of your customers
are voip customers, etc? What ATA do you use now?

Re: [WISPA] Ubiquiti PicoStation M

2012-05-26 Thread Joey Craig
By default, they come set at 40 MHz. You will need to set it to 20 MHz for
your laptop and other equipment to associate to it.

Subject: [WISPA] Ubiquiti PicoStation M

On the advice of my vendor, I got a set of UBNT PicoStation Ms. For testing,
I turned off AirMax, put the radio in Access Point mode and bridge network.
When trying to connect various laptops to the radio, I get immediate
failures. It doesn't matter if I give myself an address on my Wireless
adapter or plug the radio into my network, which has a DHCP server,
connections still fail. I have no security set for the test.

Any suggestions?
