There is nothing wrong with prioritizing one type of service over another
(VOIP vs FTP).  It leads to a better quality of service for the end user.
Where this was going sideways earlier was when the big ISP companies were
going to charge Netflix and Hulu directly if they wanted priority on their
backbones.

[WISPA] Exalt Radio repairs

Just had one killed by a strike Friday.  What are the odds I'm driving by
the tower at Midnight when the strike its and my phone gets the text.

[WISPA] Insurance once again

Apparently Liberty Mutual has misplaced their testes and has sent us a
non-renewal notice with reason code being they no longer insure ISPs.  No
losses for a decade.

Any suggestions out there?  We're talking about bulidings, towers,
liability, etc.

[WISPA] What my spies are talking about

Some of my friends at Verizon are talking a major shift in their Fiber
Deployment.
They have decided Fiber to the Home is non practical.  They have adopted a
fiber to the pedestal scheme with the last part of the connectivity being
wireless to the home.  Details on bands used have not been provided, but
that is apparently their new model.  They have sold their copper plant in
Texas to Frontier as a part of this plan.   Interesting times.

cogent including paypal today.  I've heard the DDOS noise, but have never
seen paypal taken down.  Any input?

[WISPA] Odd problem with old PTP400

I've got on old moto ptp400 that has been in service for too long.
Recently ping times through this radio have gone to 200-400ms.  I'm not
seeing the throughput that would cause this link to fill up.

A reboot on both ends drops the pings for a while, then they go back up
within 5 minutes.

Any ideas?

We're 60 feet away from the shack.   The antenna excites the tower to the
point of shocking you if you touch the steel with 40' of the antenna array.

[WISPA] cambium 450 real 90 degree panels

Does anyone have some recommendations for this?  Cambiums 90° antenna is

[WISPA] FM Radio interference

I have an existing tower that has a FM transmitter on it.  I believe they
are just under 10,000 Watts.
Since we have been one that tower, I could never link up Ethernet that runs
up the tower to the equipment on the bottom at 100BT.  I've tried ferrite
rings on both ends, all cables are shielded and grounded.  Always had to go
to 10BT to get a link.

I moved our radios 35 feet away from the bottom their antennas and still
cannot link at 100BT.

The new radios require 1000BT too use them to full advantage.  Ideas?

I'm considering conduit all the way up the tower.  I don't want to put
switches at the top.

We sell our customers routers, both Netgear and Linksys.  We charge $100
and guarantee the router for as long as they are on the service with us.
Linksys seem to have a much higher failure rate than the Netgear units.
Netgear routers do pppoe better and more reliably.

We use the SMART UPS series with AP9617 control / monitor cards.  If you get
the XL (extended run) versions, they usually have an external DC battery
connector that you can add additional batteries to.   We have many of these
in the field with years of run time.

Expect to change batteries every 2.5 years if you want to prevent failures,
or every 3-4 years if failure is acceptable.

We once bought out a company that came with a tower company.  We closed that
down within a couple of months after watching them work.  1/2 of them were
crank or meth heads, the others were just nuts.  None could keep a drivers
license.

I caught one guy hanging upside down on a cranes heavy ball 300 ft up
without safety straps  With OSHA on-site (but not looking thank God).
Fired him over the radio.  I heard he had since been injured somewhere in
Florida.

Like I said before, drug test your tower climbers monthly.  We let another
guy go after he failed a drug test.  Zanax and weed.  You don't need
climbers that are high on anything.

dangerous trying to install a 4 foot parabolic dish.

If you want laundry and repair services also, Unifirst is good.

I dropped them due to cost and the issue with employees forgetting to bring
the uniforms in to be laundered.

Bulk order good shirts / t-shirts and have them silk screened or embroidered
locally.  It's probably the cheapest approach.

Have the employees wear blue jeans every day as the bottom part of their
uniform.

They are pretty far out of band for the two bands you mentioned.  I would
bet that no interference will be noticed.
They would have to have some pretty bad radios to get you with harmonics on
the RF side.  You may experience some Ethernet issues depending on
separation and your shielding, but I would also bet it would be a non issue.

FM transmitters near 100MHz are like a bullet to the head for Ethernet.

Has anybody worked on allowing streaming video up to lets say 10 Mb total
transfer, then knocking THAT stream down to a slow rate?
This would allow for your average utube streaming of a small video, but kill
anything larger like netflix, hulu, etc.

IP Tables and a dynamic script should be able to do this.

I have written in a more eloquent way to various of my congresspeople,
however, this was more of a quick rant on a yahoo message board.  I am a
true believer in democracy, capitalism, and the free market.  I very
strongly don't believe in socialism.

I don't feel that the majority of those at the wheel at the moment have a
clue as to what they are doing.They're more after sound bites and speech
fodder.

wispa is a good beginning for our industry, but there are some steps that
would really help make some changes and mature this industry..  I'll try to
put some of those down and post them up early next week.

I don't know how many of you were in this business when 9/11 came about.  A
while after that the internet backbone came to a crawl.  I called a friend
of mine that worked for the same people I used to and he told me about all
the monitoring points the gov just installed at the peer points.  It took
them about a month to fix the performance hit they caused (not too sneaky).
Ya gotta love the NSA...  biggest spook agency in the nation, but most
americans don't know they exist.  NRO only beats them by $$.

[WISPA] something to watch out for with genset

Since the weather had turned nasty here in Texas, I thought I'd test out the
Generator to ensure it would do it's job.  It fired up just fine, but one of
the exhaust flaps that keep water out of the exhaust had frozen shut with a
large clump of ice on top to boot (counter weight).  This would have
eventually fouled the plugs on one side had I not checked.  Running for 5
minutes did not clear it.

Yet something else for us to look for.

100BaseT or GiG-E to 10BaseT Half duplex only.

Or low end unmanaged Gig-E to anything else.

Nothing, and I repeat nothing will stop a REAL direct lightning strike
(other than multiple feet of spark gap).

All you can do is best practice and a little bit more for critical circuits.

All this stuff though has been during good weather.  No spikes, just day to
day.

I will burn a virgin power supply in the AM and drink a beer over it.

Is is just me or are others having serious power supply issues the last two
months?

I've lost 6 APC Smart UPS 1500 (5 bad batts, 1 Failed unit).  We change
batteries every two years as a preventative measure.
1 Cisco 12000 Power Supply (never seen one of these fail)
3 Server Power supplies

These have all failed at different locations, power grids, etc.  No pattern.
I'm tired of this nonsense.  I'm going to burn a virgin power supply in the
yard tonight as a sacrifice!
I may even include a Cuban Cigar and some Bourbon.

[WISPA] Climbing High-Angle Emergency Equipment

I thought I'd share a little information.  We have our own tower climbers.
We are often working in remote areas where we provide service.  In one of
those rare moments when I have time to think, I wondered what kinds of
high-angle rescue capabilities the fire departments around us had.

Here's what I found out:  NONE
The closest high-angle rescue units are in at least 1 hour away.  If you
have an injured climber, 1 hour may be too much.

We now have 1000' of 5/8" rescue rope, and a Fisk Descender in house.  We
are also actively working with a couple of the local fire departments to get
them and us properly certified.

Just a thought as many of us work out in the sticks!  You don't want an
untrained person lowering you off a tower with their pickup truck and 1/4"
twine.

[WISPA] PPPoE Termination point -- NOC or Tower

We're at another growth milestone and are evaluating some network changes.
We are planning on doubling our network footprint this next quarter.

Currently, we terminate all PPPoE connections at a main NOC.  This has shown
some limitations as time has gone on.  They are manageable, but it would be
better not having to deal with.

We are looking into installing small servers at each tower and just running
OSPF between that tower and our NOCs.  This would tend to make cpe
connections more robust as packet loss due to interference caused by a
clueless or unscrupulous competitor would not leave the customers linksys
router lost.

What are are the general opinions here on this?

If tower site termination is the norm, what hardware (extended temp range)
are you using at the towers?

Microtik or other software?
