Most ISP's I know of charge $5 per account per month, so that seems to
be an accepted price.

As a follow up. I have decided to charge him $5/month per email as
long as it is prepaid for the length of time he wants to keep it.
Thanks to all for your suggestions. It was very helpful!

Likewise. When we shut down our dial-up in 2002, we kept the mail service going
with the domain our users had for almost 5
years, charging $60 annually, including Postini. We also do a good amount of
backup email services all completely outsourced
from multiple providers.

2008-11-05 Thread John Scrivner
I charge $5 per month for email only. Many use the service. I would not give
this away for free. If we had something we could monetize for ads on our web
based mail then we would probably give email away for free but I do not know
how to do that. Anyone have luck making money from ads on web based mail? I
know Google forbids this being done for anything but their own Gmail based
mail or hosted Gmail for others. I am sure they are making a killing on the
ads they use on their Gmail interface. I use Imail so I am guessing I culd
add ads to web email messages.

Re: [WISPA] cancelled customer email

2008-11-05 Thread Eje Gustafsson
Since we run our own e-mail server the cost is minimal. But we still charge
$5/mo for e-mail only (we offer web mail, imap, pop3, spam filtering (user
controlled) as well virus filtering, web calendar with option for calendar &
contacts syncing with Outlook, Windows Mobile devices and Blackberries).
But since the "fee" is fairly low they have to pay upfront for a minimum of
6 months. We have numerous users that do this when transferring service
(dialups going highspeed and we can not provide highspeed in their area or
people that move, even have some customers that just like us I guess and
getting e-mail only from us even though we have never provided internet
connection for them and they do not live in an area we serve).

OK guys. I've never had this happen before so I'm not usre what to do.
I've got a long time customer that has fallen for the AT&T DSL
giveaway package and is switching. He asked if he could pay a small
monthly rate to keep his email addresses for a few months until he
gets the word out. My first reaction is to tell him to take a flying
leap. After some thought, I want to be reasonable. I've thought about
telling him he can do so with a low end plan. We dont sell email
accounts. How do you handle this?

Re: [WISPA] cancelled customer email

2008-11-05 Thread cam
We offer a e-mail forwarding service, however this can be a problem,
unless you check mail before forward, you will also forward all the spam
to the new provider and this can sometimes lead to getting blocked by the
new host which in turn could screw up your other users.
