Doesn't Juniper change their model numbers and names for different
countries too? It's really hard to compare hardware when the product
numbers change from country to country!

Actually BSD. And I believe JunOS has always been based on BSD. Not a recent
thing.

Just my opinion here. If a network engineer understand the protocols, learning
the vendor's OS is not a big deal. But I get how folks develop a comfort
sticking with 1 vendor.

Junos is not Linux, but is a set of processes that run on top of a FreeBSD
kernel. It's quite similar to IOS-XE in that regard, where the Cisco IOS
process runs from within Linux.

The Junos process 'rpd' is almost an operating system in itself - it has
it's own scheduling and memory management and doesn't use the operating
system for that.

Re: [WISPA] Juniper Network

2012-01-26 Thread Mike Hammett
I've been looking around at network appliance vendors (the people that
make the commercialized hardware that these guys build their platforms
off of) to find some with more power. There are a lot of people out
there making a lot of these things. So far the biggest I've found can do
16x 10GigE and the vendor says the platform is able to move that much,
assuming there isn't a lot of other work going on. He said each
SandyBridge core can do a 10GigE Full Duplex. Dual CPUs with 8 cores
mean that it can do all 10gigE ports.

I had a fun converstation the other day...

The consultant advisor's optinion was the Linux should be replaced
with
Cisco, on the merit that a soultion was needed that was well known, so
investors would feel more comfortable knowing that operating the
network
didn't have to rely on me. Then we discussed to operate the
Cisco, we would
need to hire a $150k per year Cisco engineer, at a cost 4x above the
previous year's operating cost. So I responded questioning the
consultant,
"so you are saying we need build a network that relies on a high
salary
individual other than I? So then if the network breaks, I'd be
helpless, and
I'd be in deep trouble, if the Network engineer quit or asked for
another
raise? The advise didn't sit well with me, and it had nothing to
do with a
technology comparison of the two products types, and I in no way
mean to
downplay the value of Cisco.

My point here is... The most effective router is really the one
that the
user is most familiar with. It doesn't matter how powerful the Cisco,
Juniper and foundry are, if you and your techs dont know how to
operate
them, when you need to on a moments notice. Its really about, which
selection will allow you to more easilly and speedily resolve the
task at
hand.

Its amazing how a $400 Linux Box (such as MIkrotik) can quickly
solve a
problem.

With that said, We've been looking into Juniper lately, I like
that their
new lines are all based on the same Juno OS, which is Linux. :-)

So, my recommendation is... What are you familiar with? Use that.

I'm not familiar with the Juniper model and foundry products
listed to know
if that is a good product to keep or not.

What I will say is, if uysing MIktotik, you want to consider more
than jsut
number of subs. What speed is the Internet backbone the MT would
connect to?
How would you plan to use the Mikrotik, from a protocol feature
perspective?
A MT1100 will easilly push 100mb FDX traffic. But if you plan on
having a
lot of queuing and rules (x200 users), it can be slowed down very
quickly.
In those cases, its worth paying an extra $200-$400, to upgrade to
one of
the faster CPUcore type third party hardware models, such as sold
by Baltic,
Titan, or LinkTechnologies. A Dual core INtel 1.5G-2.4Ghz CPU
model are very
affordble and adds some horsepower for using MT features.

Re: [WISPA] Juniper Network

2012-01-25 Thread Akinlolu C. Ajayi-Obe
I just took over an abandoned network which I have to get up and running in no
time. There's a Juniper J2300, ISG 1000 and some foundry switches. Wondering
whether to trash the equipment and put in an MT RB1100 in? We won't have more
than 200 users at the peak. Need suggestions.

Thanks

We recently had a chat with juniper. "Advanced BGP" is for configuring a route
reflector and confederations. As a border router, I'd say perfect..

[WISPA] Juniper Routers / BGP

2010-11-06 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Rubens,

Are you familiar with the J-6350 Series ?

From the Data Spec Sheets, being able to accept 2Gig Ram, and having 4x
GIG E ports native, Do you know if it can handle Multiple BGP Peers
/Full Tables and be used an Edge BGP Transit Router for ISP/NSP ?

They list a software option called Advanced BGP (JX-BGP-ADV-LTU) any
idea what that is ? and how much would it cost ?

Thanks.

IMO you only go with the M line if you need OC cards.
MX80 would be a better fit if you are all ethernet.

[WISPA] Juniper M20

2010-11-05 Thread Mike Hammett
I am looking at comments or recommendations for a Juniper M20. I was
looking at a PowerRouter 2200 (or equivalent), but someone I'm working
with on this project said a Juniper M20 would be a better choice for the
type of application I'm looking at. Recommendations\comments?

I am looking to put one each in two different carrier hotels, buy some
bandwidth (at least a gig of commit) and haul it back out. BGP full
routes from a handful of carriers, BGP downstream. May need one or more
10 GigE port(s).

On these routers I'm really liking the completely redundant hardware,
but would be more than happy to put MT or ImageStream routers downstream.

I can Google for places to buy from, but recommendations are always nice.

Re: [WISPA] juniper

2009-10-24 Thread Rubens Kuhl
SRX series is the likely the way forward on Juniper CPU-based routers,
capable of running BGP, MPLS etc. If you don't need the security stuff
on SRX, just don't use it or don't pay for the extra features.

2009-10-23 Thread Marco Coelho
When I talk uptime, I mean uptime with no incidents, no unscheduled
reboots, no issues period. I've got Some old grey Cisco routers that
have been running for literally years without a reboot.

The only things I can give this award to are a well built, locked
down, linux box, and a few well configured routers.

It's how you'd want your pace maker to be!

I have to say that uptime usually doesn't mean it's a solid product,
rather it has had sufficient power for that time. I have had Windows
95 running for months and XP for a good 3 years.

Now if I wanted to bash Cisco I would point at the incident this week
with Level3 in Atlanta.

Juniper is a solid product. We've used lots of them in various
situations. Be wary of the GUI front end
I think they were designed by the software engineers only, with no
systems engineering control. The GUI interfaces is about as user
friendly and intuitive as a wife.

No dear, that wasn't me..

That said, my uptime on medium to larger sized Cisco gear is measured
in years. When you are purchasing a 5 to 7 year product the cost is
not the biggest driver.

Well, its been running a week, stable. With a full BGP table.
Where 3.24 plus couldn't run a full bgp table for more then 4 hours,

I understand a week isn't nothing, But since about 3.28 with routing test,
bgp has been as stable as the machine its running on.

Re: [WISPA] juniper

2009-10-23 Thread Joe Fiero
We have 7 IS routers and they have been the only component in our systems to
deliver 100%, 100% of the time. Even survived a siye-killing tower hit by
lightning that took out everything else and fried the Cat-5 coming down the
tower. Components were toasted on both sides of the IS an it was untouched.

[WISPA] juniper

2009-10-23 Thread jp
Anyone use their routers? I'm wondering if they overstate their performance
greatly or if they are conservative in their promises.

I'm considering using one to replace an aging Cisco. The Cisco has been
reliable, but it's running out of steam with 150mbit going through it pretty
steady, and low on memory for more BGP. Mikrotik I love, but I don't trust
their BGP and software feature testing in new software releases for something
this important.

This Juniper is about $3k and has pretty nice specs.
