(Suppose Google pays for employees' home Internet access as a corporate perk, which sounds very much in-character for them. If they can get 2/3 of their employees on this network, and stop having to pay for a few thousand employees' DSL or cable modem connections, that's obviously in their and their shareholders' best interest.) Until there's some evidence to the contrary, Google bids on wifi contract for San Fran isn't any more or less newsworthy than any other company bidding on a contract. P.S. when did it become popular to hate on Google? I must have missed that memo, and I need to be up on all the popular trends because I'm hip and funky and poppin' fresh. I downloaded the client, and was most interested to see the tagline in the About window: Tunc tua res agitur, Paries cum proximus ardet. Which my extensive training in classical Latin interprets as: Then your property is in danger, when the nearest wall is burning. I'd definitely take that as a warning! David, Yes, poppin' fresh...I miss the Pillsbury Doughboy along with the pop-pop-fizz-fizz Alka-selzer bubble boy. I'm hip (didn't like the Frito Bandito). You've told me more than I knew. I assumed it was a VPN but didn't have access to it before it disappeared. However, a pre-configured VPN is just about the simplest solution possible considering the easy-to-crack WEP and WPA problems and the wide variety of older client hardware (such as Orinoco Silver) that has almost no security. The new Network World anthology of Wireless Security had dozens of articles on all the wireless security mechanisms and concludes that only the very most sophisticated AAA systems approach the use of simple VPN. And a VPN is about the only option with a motley collection of clients that need to be secure in a pubic 802.11a/b/g environment. So, I assumed that GOOGLE would provide a client component to do that for users. But, don't know and you've told me a lot more, as I said, than I knew. I wonder what their next move will be. Then imagine where all those sniffed bits go...yep...you guessed it, a database... Then guess where they determine what the most popular search terms really are Scary, eh ?
