How about a blog tutorial? :-)

If you need clarification, by all means drop me an email or leave a
comment. I'll be happy to answer if there is time. If not, then I'll
let ya know if/when we need to talk about billing. Fair enough?

[WISPA] Blocking chat/IM

2008-12-13 Thread Blair Davis

Hi all.

Today, I have a request from a user to block chat/IM services on their
connection...

Anyone done this for a user? any ideas where to start?

The user has a daughter that is getting into trouble via IM.

While I know there is software that can be place on the daughters
laptop, she is by far more computer knowledgeable than her parents and
would likely be able to disable stuff placed on her system.

help?

Blair

It depends on what they're using to chat with. AFAIK, it is impossible to
block FaceBook and MySpace web based chats without blocking those sites
altogether, as they just use HTTP for their chat protocol.

Assuming the child isn't very technically knowledged you can just drop
the ports that AIM, MSN or Yahoo clients require.

Of course the issue of meebo or web clients will cause some issues -
there are expensive hardware options and reasonable software options.

With a Mikrotik Router (or any linux router that supports L7 filtering),
this is easily done.
