Comcast made a splash last year in the wholesale world. First, they placed the biggest order of Cisco CRS-1s. Then they interconnected every city they are in with OC256 links over their own fiber. Then they started peering and worked a deal with Equnix direct to sell wholesale transit. They only sell full commit GigE and 10GigE ports, but the price is right and the performance is awesome. This is what happens when a company builds a modern network without legacy concerns AND has a lot of money. BTW, you might have missed that Comcast is actually a pretty major content company. They own E!, Style, Golf Channel, G4, various sports channels, the 76ers, the flyers, and several other content producers I can't think of. While those properties may be content in the traditional sense as opposed to the web sense; Comcast is a big enough deal to leverage this situation as they enter new markets such as wholesale internet. -Matt Well, Comcast typically does not provide their own transit, they buy transit from others. There are reasons for that, for example because they may buy effectively since they do mostly download and provide little content, or to stay focused on their core competency which is not transit. But there is little motive for them to give you a good price, when you are in competition to them. I'd argue anywhere you'd want to pick up a connection from them, where they'd sell it to you, you'd probably have options from other companies for a better price. But not my place to speak for them. They are at all the major carrier hotels including NOTA in Miami. Of course if you are looking for bandwidth at NOTA we can help you out. Interesting. I guess they wised up :-) Their is no doubt they had the cross subsidee to fund it, and volume to support it. So the next question is... is it a good enough offering, that ISPs will trade one Monopoly (RBOC) for the other (Cable)? I can hear the questions now at the sales table... Mr ISP, so you use Comcast transit, hmmm... then how come I'm considering your third party Its not much different then using ATT, Qwest, MCI or other bandwidth. They all sell DSL, etc. Matt service, when Comcast send me a flyer last week for half the price to go direct? I can hear the MTU Landlord negotiations now... My tenants are demanding Comcast, and won't sign the lease till the get it, because they say that it is the best. Should we continue partnering with you, or let Comcast in? What... you said you use Comcast as your primary transit provider also? Mmmm, maybe the tenant is right? I can hear the FCC meetings now Ohh so the Open access strategies are working well to serve WISP's needs. Guess we should give Comcast what they want, Duopoly is A-Ok. .
