[WISPA] Poor performing customer

2010-03-05 Thread Mark McElvy
I have a customer I set up a couple of months ago, UBNT PS2 running in
B, 30ft mast on roof. It has been running fine till last week.

Customer end is showing -75 with -85 noise, the noise seems weird since
the are in the middle of nowhere and the cpe can only see my tower and
their own router.

Tower end see's them @-85 with -99 noise.

I have a feeling its interference/noise but do not have a Spectrum
analyzer to confirm. Did realize the there is a direct line from client
to my tower to competitors tower. Client to my tower 6 miles and another
6 miles to competitors tower.

This could easily be multipath caused by a change in the ground conditions.
Trees, etc.

I've got customers that get junk service every spring and fall. There are a
few weeks when things just go to hell, then it clears up all on it's own.
Seems to have something to do with how wet the ground is.

They are usually LONG links, 10 miles or more. And there is just nothing
practical that can be done to get enough height to get out of the fresnel
zone issues we have.

You might try moving their antenna up or down, sometimes by as little as 2'
and see if that helps.

I'm assuming you've already tried the obvious and changed channels at the
ap?

Re: [WISPA] Poor performing customer

2010-03-05 Thread MDK
I'll second that. I've had 14 mile out customers go from 'not really
working' to working very well, by moving the antenna about 16 inches. And
no, there was NOTHING anywhere near it. No trees in the path, no
buildings, etc. This was rooftop mount, at the very peak. I was 20
inches off the roof and went to about 3 feet, and it made a world of
difference. I had one that was dead as a doornail at 6 miles, showed
very strong RSSI, but could not pass data. We changed everything,
including the cable, radio, and board. None of that improved it. I
noticed that variable weather seemed to influence it, especially fog.

So, this was under the wide eaves of the house, so I moved the antenna about
3 inches down from the eaves and about 8 inches away from the house.
Result? Sporadic ability to pass packets changed to rock solid, with good
Quality and noise figures and even the Voip phone works great.

The owner couldn't even see that I'd moved the antenna, but it fixed his
issues completely.
