2016-03-02 Thread Coehoorn, Joel
I just did some searching, and ALL of those (Crestron, ClickShare, and
WePresent) will only show content that you can load in their app. If you
want to show content from other apps, you're stuck.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Desktop projection to classroom display

2016-03-02 Thread Sullivan, Ryan
At UCSD, we have a customer who recently asked about a Barco Clickshare set up.
The default mode is that it does act as an AP but there is an advanced set up
configuration that allows the AP function to be disabled when the base unit has
a wired connection and the remote buttons can attach to a WPA2-E network.

Section 4.12

No actual experience with the product but it sounds promising.

We have a ClickShare - it works well, but was very pricy. It basically is an AP
(luckily it can do 5GHz so interference wasn’t a problem) that talks to the
dongles. The benefit is the simplicity for Windows and Mac users; we get no
support calls on it. The down side is the cost (4 digits for the device and USB
dongles).

One of our groups just showed up with the Barco ClickShare. I know it's been
discussed here in the past a couple of times, but any idea how it compares with

Just at a first glance I'm not too wild about it since it basically looks like
an AP that gets connected to a projector or display.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Desktop projection to classroom display

2015-11-17 Thread Ronald Loneker
Good Morning -

I think someone mentioned a Creston product but not by name.

We are just starting to deploy Creston AirMedia on campus in several
rooms/labs. Wireless connection works easily for our faculty/staff
wireless security group - we've had to add our student group to the access
point(s) in the classroom to permit them to connect to the AirMedia due to
the way our network is set up. This spring will be a good test because
we'll have classes actively using the rooms. It does work with iPads and
iPhones (iPhones are more limited in terms of what they can do - haven't
tested the iPad fully yet).

I've seen YouTube video being played through the AirMedia and it's not
bad. I'm not sure if I'd play a DVD in a laptop wirelessly connecting to
the AirMedia - that might be too overpowering. Firmware upgrades are being
promised to bring it up to 30 fps video.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Desktop projection to classroom display

2015-11-05 Thread Justin Dover
Bruce,

Actiontec's widi boxes can use 2.4 or 5. If you have a single band wifi
NIC then it will piggy back on whatever you are currently connected as, 2.4
or 5. If you have a dual band card, then it can use the 2nd band for widi
only. Works pretty darn good. Most of our teachers only use the widi now
even though they have the option to hardwire via VGA or HDMI.

talks about how WiDi was designed to avoid overlap with enterprise wireless
network channel usage by avoiding the DFS channels at least, but it still
doesn't prevent random users from setting these things up and inadvertently

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Desktop projection to classroom display

2015-10-29 Thread Justin Dover
It does but not directly. It also depends on the clients WiFi card. If it
is dual channel card then one channel will be for WLAN and one channel will
be for WiDi. But only the devices in the last year or two have dual
channel cards. So most devices piggy back on the WLAN with their single
channel cards. This can be a problem though if a client gets associated
with a different access point in the middle of a WiDi session.

Look into the BlackBox device I posted earlier
(http://www.blackbox.com/Store/Detail.aspx/Wireless-Presentation-System/AVX-HDMI-WI

but about 1/3 to 1/4 the price. We've purchased a couple to trial.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Desktop projection to classroom display

2015-10-28 Thread Oliver, Jeff
And I forgot that there is another version of the air-media that is made by
teqavit.com, in fact they are so similar that their clients work on each
other's devices (and possibly one of them is made by the other?).

Cheers,

Look into the BlackBox device I posted earlier
(http://www.blackbox.com/Store/Detail.aspx/Wireless-Presentation-System/AVX-HDMI-WI
) - it's suspiciously similar to the AirMedia (we have a handful of those),
but about 1/3 to 1/4 the price. We've purchased a couple to trial.

We looked at the barco but it was pricey, we use the crestron air-media which
has the added benefit of not needing wifi. It in fact plugs in wired and you
simply access it via any network route.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Desktop projection to classroom display

2015-10-28 Thread Justin Dover
Check out Actiontec Screenbeams. We use them in 30 of our classrooms and
the wireless video stream is almost perfect. IT does require a good
wireless network because WiDi piggy backs on your wireless routers. We use
them in the classroom to wireless stream to our projectors.

Any info/advice is appreciated.

We have worked with multiple groups on campus to try and meet their needs
with various screen sharing solutions over the years. Over time our
Learning Technology group shifted focus and start looking for a solution
that could meet the majority of users requirements/wants without
reinventing infrastructure. Last time we met them they were working on
vetting a screen sharing solution from Zoom https://zoom.us/ . So far they
seem happy and have asked for no Infrastructure changes. They are still
using it in select test case classrooms for now.

One of our groups just showed up with the Barco ClickShare. I know it's been
discussed here in the past a couple of times, but any idea how it compares with
some of the other solutions mentioned here already?

Just at a first glance I'm not too wild about it since it basically looks like
an AP that gets connected to a projector or display.
