Linksys ap and any ol cpe device (even a laptop) should do the trick unless
the buildings are made out of 6' thick concrete. We regularly get more than
50' from the aps.

Depending on throughput needed - two Linksys (WRTGxx) wireless routers
loaded with Linux and small directional antennas ought to do the trick.

CLARIFICATION: I have never tried the WRTGxx routers or the Linux that I
read about on line that people are loading on them. It just came to my
mind

as really cheap and easy to get!! :)

what would you recommend for an internal point to point link, going 50
feet across a backyard?
need: inexpensive; needs to be wireless.
harware budget is no more than: $300.
any thoughts?

Get a pair of Access Points like Deliberant DLB2350 and set them to run
WDS. Also set them to WPA personal security. Set a shared key. Total
cost about $230.00.

If you want to use a little bit more security you can download
FreeRadius for either Linux or Windows XP
and set your security to WPA Enterprise. This uses
radius user and pass as well as encryption. Each user has their own
private encrypted session to the AP with this setup.
Presto!
