Re: [WISPA] AirFiber Snow issues

2015-01-10 Thread Scott Lambert
We had snow build up on our first AF24 link once. The unit it built-up on was
facing directly into the wind. The snow was very wet and probably more sleet
than snow at times.

I was in another town at the time. I had a weather stripped bed cover on my
truck with Christmas packages inside. When I opened the cover there was a 5
thick wall of snow the full height of the bed between the tailgate and the
packages. The wind was western Nebraska type, very unusual for here.

I had one of the guy grab a hammer and strike the tower from the ground. 2
of snow slid off the face of the AF24. The link came back up. It is a 1.25 mi
link. That was the first winter AF24s were available. We've had rainfade
take the link down a couple of times, but no more snowfade here in Arkansas.

So, yes, it can happen.

How is the spectrum interference in your area in UNII-2e and UNII-3 bands ?
AirFiber does not only come in 24 GHz, can also use 5 GHz.

Re: [WISPA] AirFiber Snow issues

2015-01-09 Thread Josh Reynolds
The ITU method is overly simplified. Many would argue Crane's method was more
accurate.

( For the sheer sake of argument)

We have found bay fog to be far better at disruption than any rains we have
here. Even tidal shifts on open water shots don't mess with our links as much
as bay fog does.

Re: [WISPA] AirFiber Snow issues

2015-01-09 Thread Adair Winter
When it rains here, it can really freaking rain. we get some pretty big
storms. I just don't want to give people false hope. Make sure you have a
back up if it must be up all the time.
we had one outage last 45 minutes due to rain along the path. others were
7-15 minutes. frustrating.
I also have a 12 miles 11Ghz link on 3' dishes running -43 that dropped in
the rain (again, hard rain, all along the path)

Here is my AF24. signal is moving a bit. [image: Inline image 1]

My AirFiber 24's are 3 5 miles here in the northern plains with no issue
with the snow. Someone said snow is transparent and I'd agree, but the rain
sure kicks us once in a while

Re: [WISPA] AirFiber Snow issues

2015-01-09 Thread Josh Reynolds
Snow is RF transparent (virtually).

Melting, wet snow can attenuate the signal at 24ghz pretty well.

Here in Alaska we hardly ever have an AF24 go down, and we are right on the
coast.

It's going to depend on the type of weather you commonly have and the distance
of the link.

Re: [WISPA] AirFiber Snow issues

2015-01-09 Thread Jim Patient
I haven't saw any issues yet with snow on my 3.2 mile af24 link but it
drops and fails over to the back up MT link in heavy rain =.3/hr. I
posted some graphs a while back showing the traffic, signals, and
rainfall rate during a storm.

My AirFiber 24's are 3 5 miles here in the northern plains with no
issue with the snow. Someone said snow is transparent and I'd agree, but
the rain sure kicks us once in a while

Looking at acquiring AirFiber back haul but I am concerned that the
front of the antenna is very flat and that snow would stick to it and
degrade and possibly take down the link?

Has anyone seen this

We will be using them on a 2 mile link and need 99.999 uptime

Re: [WISPA] AirFiber Snow issues

2015-01-09 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Yea !... But I will argue the Murphy's method is even more accurate...

If you Airfiber link drops in rain then .. you have 24ghz Rain Fade..

If your Airfiber link does not drop in rain then you have no 24ghz Rain Fade...

For the sheer sake of argument !

Comparing how my link does when compared with yours in 24ghz is plain silly...

But Comparing complete statements such as my 24ghz Link, which is X miles long,
in Rain Zone or Region (state your region) does (or does not) drop in Rain
would be a more meaningful statement...

Anything else is just shooting the breeze at the water cooler..

:)

The ITU method is overly simplified. Many would argue Crane's method was more
 accurate.

( For the sheer sake of argument)

We have found bay fog to be far better at disruption than any rains we have
here. Even tidal shifts on open water shots don't mess with our links as
 much as bay fog does.
