[WSG] hourglass icon appears for a split second when rolling over vertical navigation items in IE 6
Hi All, When rolling out of a nav link or into another, in IE 6 only, for a split second the hourglass icon appears. Also, when moving the mouse into the link, the background colour/image is triggered 1-2px before the mouse arrow (My mouse is over general content) changes into a hand (Hey, my mouse is over a link). I know it's not critical but it is annoying. Has anyone ran into this before? [WSG] Is position:absolute legal in a floated div? relates to a Footer problem in NS7
Hi all, I know NS7 is basically dead but it also generally has complaint rendering. What it did to my page and my subsequent understanding of the problem made me wonder if the others (Ffox, IE and Opera) were just being more forgiving. The issue is that the footer and BW image divs in this page http://www.bats.co.nz/den/ position themselves relative to the body even though the content div has position:relative; After some testing I isolated the float: right; ( to make content 1st in source) and display: inline (which is in there for IE 's double margin bug and will be placed in a IE specific stylesheet in due course) styles as causing the issue. Float: right is the main culprit. Which leads to the topic of this post. 'Is position:absolute legal (or advisable) in a floated div?' Many thanks in advance, Ben Wrighton. ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **
RE: [WSG] Standards based visual design guidelines
I had a quick Google. It is difficult because 'web design' is (often wrongly IMHO) used to describe IA, UI and front-end website development. But these were kinda interesting. http://www.webdesignpractices.com/ http://usability.gov/guidelines/designconsid.html http://www.e-government.govt.nz/docs/web-guidelines-v1/chapter4.html http://www.grantasticdesigns.com/tips.html Hope you find them useful Lisa :) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Herrod, Lisa Sent: Wednesday, 14 September 2005 2:05 p.m. To: 'wsg@webstandardsgroup.org' Subject: RE: [WSG] Standards based visual design guidelines Hi David, yes I've done that. RE: [WSG] Text Size Statistics
How about if we all designated a single page to link to which clearly explains how to change the text size in different browsers? In response to Terrence isn't not being able to read the content constitute a barrier and therefore wouldn't showing users how to make the content readable be removing that barrier. I've noticed that flaming seams to occur on this list on Fridays so can I possibly pre-empt a roasting and request that the constructive informative discussion continues to be just that ;) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Terrence Wood Sent: Friday, 2 September 2005 1:09 p.m. To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Subject: Re: [WSG] Text Size Statistics I'm not sure if it's the designer/developers domain to educate people on how to use their browsers, we should focus more on removing barriers to content. kind regards Terrence Wood. RE: [WSG] IE min-width problem
http://www.svendtofte.com/code/max_width_in_ie/- is a good article on using IE expressionsto control text width. -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of Tania MorrisSent: Wednesday, 10 August 2005 4:20 p.m.To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.orgSubject: [WSG] IE min-width problem Hi Folks, I've been working on a site which has three columns which unfortunately need full height backgrounds, some have rounded corners and... well it's been tricky but it's all working ok... except that due to the fact that IE doesn't accept min-width, it becomes quick ugly in IE when the window is resized... You can look at the beta site at http://dev.papercutmedia.com/perthjazz/ The CSS isn't to messy, but the XHTML does contain a few "spare" divs to enable the various background pics to get the "look" right ( boy am I looking forward to CSS3 with multiple background images for single elements!) and I'm getting the feeling I've looked at it too long and am not seeingsomething obvious... Any pearls of wisdom that can be offered would be graciously recieved. Tania
[WSG] Making a container div the same height as the longest div in it in mozilla browsers.
Hi all, I'm displaying my cell borders using the page container div's background image and border properties. Works in IE and Opera but in all the Mozilla browsers I've tested in (Netscape, Firefox and Mozilla) the container doesn't wrap around the divs. I know it's something to do with all the divs in the container div being floated. If anyone can tell me how to solve it or point me in the direction of the relevant resource I would really appreciate it. The page is at http://www.sittingpretty.co.nz/Demo/ The style sheet is at http://www.sittingpretty.co.nz/Demo/style.css - html and css validate Thanks in advance. Ben P.s - as the URL suggests this is still in beta. The semantics etc. aren't finalised. ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **
[WSG] Is there a tool that converts long hand CSS to shorthand CSS?
Hi all, Has anyone come across an app (preferably free or reasonably priced) that will convert longhand CSS e.g. .style { border-top-width: 1px;border-right-width: 1px;border-bottom-width: 1px;border-left-width: 1px;border-top-style: solid;border-right-style: solid;border-bottom-style: solid;border-left-style: solid;border-top-color: #CC6600;border-right-color: #CC6600;border-bottom-color: #CC6600;border-left-color: #CC6600;} To shorthand CSS e.g. .style {border: 1px solid #CC6600;} Thank you for your time, Respectfully, Ben Wrighton
