RE: [WSG] Mobile sites [SEC=UNOFFICIAL]

Hi Grant,

My thoughts on this are (assuming you're rebuilding an existing site):

Check your site statistics/analytics - look at the range of devices accessing
the site and what they're looking at - are there some pieces of content which
aren't being accessed from handheld devices? If you're seeing a consistent
spread of mobile access then, unless your site is going to chew up their
bandwidth, you should be fine with a responsive design. If you're seeing that
only a small subset of your site is getting mobile hits then you could look at
streamlining this into a specific mobile site with its own navigation.

Subject: [WSG] Mobile sites

Hello,

I was wondering whether having a dedicated mobile site represents an
improvement with regard to accessibility and standards, or whether it is
acceptable to have a single site that is adaptable to different screen widths
(e.g. by means of CSS media queries). Of course, setting up a separate mobile
site requires additional work and therefore expense.

I would be grateful for comments.

Thank you and regards,

Grant Bailey

RE: [WSG] Jaws Web Page Font Alignment Problem [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

2012-03-12 Thread Enid Bulman
UNCLASSIFIED

Hi Marvin,

I'm not sure I'd expect the alignment to be read out by Jaws - alignment is
something I would regard as a "presentational" element, one without semantic
value, i.e. it doesn't convey any meaning it just makes the layout look better
for sighted users.

RE: [WSG] Google 'Alexander Calder' theme [SEC=UNOFFICIAL]

Interesting - I don't have access to Chrome at work - but in FireFox it moves
slowly and gracefully and has a drop-shadow (missing in IE8) reflected below
the search box - so they have taken some time to do some rather classy work

Subject: [WSG] Google 'Alexander Calder' theme

Hello,

Today's Google home page theme seems to be a very good example of progressive
enhancement. The mobile graphic is non-interactive in IE7 but looks fine. In
Chrome, however, the graphic swings about in response to mouse movements (as
does its shadow, not present for IE7).

Could anyone advise: (i) what technologies were used for this (canvas, etc.),
and (ii) whether it is possible to save a working copy of the page locally in
order to study its function (I've never had luck doing this with Google themes).

Thank you and regards,

Grant Bailey
