[WSG] positioning help, please

http://ricochet.org/new_floradise/plants.html

hey all,

i'm having trouble positioning a background image. on the arrangements page,
the two arrows have a blue border.

the first problem i'm having is that bbedit, safari, firefox and opera (on a
mac) all position it in a different location (#pre-nex).

the desired result is to align with the left margin of the text above it.

i would truly appreciate an explanation of where i'm going wrong.

ron

you must put something like this:
 border:none

 for example
 if image is link, then:

 a img {border: none; }

 or:

 a:link {border:none}

I hope this could be helpful. Try!

thank you mladen. i put the border on to better see the position. it is
positioning that i'm having trouble with.

 Hi,

Try 'position: relative' for #main (the containing div of #pre_nex).

Try using sourceforge.net to locate some file format converters.

And as far as embedding a movie or similar, have you searched
alistapart.com?

And might I suggest http://www.delicious.com/irontombraider?

I have a bunch of different links on there.

Re: [WSG] First Attempt

2008-11-24 Thread Ron Zisman

kate,
thought i'd throw in my two cents.

firstly i was in your position a couple years ago, using dreamweaver.
at a certain point i realized i didn't know what i was doing or what
was going wrong when things didn't view properly. i hadn't heard
anything about box models, didn't know what padding or margins were,
and basically didn't understand anything about html. so i set
dreamweaver aside and took the plunge. fortunately on the css-d list,
someone was kind enough to take me under their wing and hold my
hand... much like you are receiving here. it was a steep climb, yet i
still have a few hairs left on my head. Opera has a good introduction
to web design that might provide an overview. good luck.

I never knew then about testing in different browsers and I really
don't think he did either. One day someone sent a mail to me to

I would not know how to hand code in Notepad but I am impressed by
people that can..who knows I may try it.

Thanks Bruce!

a help I came across 3 years ago was Layout Gala, a series of
layouts by Alessandro Fulciniti.

http://blog.html.it/layoutgala/

I found looking at these in an editor, and making changes such as
adding inner div's taught me a lot.

They have been rock solid across all browsers and op systems.

I'm not saying everyone should make all sites with these, but
saying these and others done by members here are a definite
shortcut to learning, preferred from stating by scrating your head
and looking at a blank screen in an editor lol.

Of course there are many other methods that can and should be
learned, and sites such as maxdesign and positioniseverything, (and
many others in this group!), have a ton of important and vital
information.

To be the best, learn from the best...

did you try:

[WSG] positioning problems

2008-02-01 Thread Ron Zisman

hey all,

i posted this on css-d this morning and couldn't get any takers. both
file validate.

http://www.ricochet.org/ricochet2/company_principal.html

original page (above) validates and goes cross browser fairly well, i
think.
it has some scaling issues on fonts, messing badly with alignment.

at issue was as the gray box expands vertically, it changes the
positions of the arrows which are intended to let people cycle
through the site quickly.
i want the position of the arrows to remain constant, and wanted to
move them under 'Communications Design'

http://www.ricochet.org/ricochet2/company_principal_alt.html

the page validates, works and scales well in firefox, but opera and
safari push the #rightcol to the bottom left corner.

looking for a remedy.

any help?

hey steve,

without going into pros and cons on the target attribute, roger
johansson has an interesting article on the subject with a javascript
solution the degrades to opening in the same window if java is turned

So what argument should I give to my clients not to use

The argument must be why you are using the XHTML Strict DTD, not
about one small component of XHTML Strict.

What is interesting though is that HTML 5 is keeping the target
attribute:
