Re: [WSG] Installing More than one version of IE6

2009-07-04 Thread Ben Buchanan
It will not run on any of the Home editions of Windows; you must
 have Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate.

A good warning, although not 100% true - it's not *supported* on Home
editions... however I used it on XP Home recently and it does run if you
accept all the warnings :)
Admittedly it didn't run terribly fast, but I'm inclined to think that was
just my Eeepc hitting a natural limit of performance (main machine is out of
action, wouldn't normally be using the Eee for all my dev work). Definitely
a case of YMMV here.
So if someone's stuck with a Home edition it's still worth a shot. VPC's
definitely the multi-browser testing solution that I trust the most in terms
of accuracy.
cheers,
Ben

Darrin,

I too used Internet Explorer Collection as suggested by Adam[1]. I did
have to download some windows updates though to get IE8 running. I found
the TredoSoft installer messed up form inputs and blocked selects!

Re: [WSG] Installing More than one version of IE6

2009-07-03 Thread Matijs
For what it's worth.
Microsoft have—for several years now—offered free Windows
XP images with IE6/7/8RC and now IE8 as well in Microsoft Virtual PC format.
Microsoft Virtual PC (the application) is also available for free, making
this the most acurate and low-cost option available. The only drawback is
that these images are time-bombed and only work for about 3-4 months.
However, new ones are usually available as soon as the old ones expire.

You can find the current images here:
http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=21eabb90-958f-4b64-b5f1-73d0a413c8efdisplaylang=en

Additionally, as Microsoft Virtual PC (the application, not the
images) only run on the Windows platform, this is pretty useless for
Linux of Mac users. The good news however is that VirtualBox—which
does run on both Linux and Mac OS
X—natively supports MS VPC images. You'd have to check the EULA that
comes with the IE app Compat images to see if this is allowed.

I believe you are better of installing a Virtual PC machine and testing it
that way. Typically, multiple installer doesn't reflect the actuality (1).
Here is a link to download a virtual PC -

(1) Many developers caution that since the innards of IE have been
tinkered with a bit, there is a possibility that what you see in a
standalone IE does not completely match what a person using that version of
IE as his full install will really see. There are no confirmed reports of
inconsistencies, and the standalone old versions of IE do show the confirmed
bugs of old versions, but it is a possible risk, if a small one.

I definitely agree with this, you just cant be sure that what you're
viewing is accurate. Multiple installer products work ok but you can
never really be sure that you're using the complete engine for that
version.

Here's another option to virtual PC which I use. I haven;t used Virtual
PC in some time so I can;t really give a good comparison.
But if it makes a difference Virtual box has no connection with
Microsoft.

I second VirtualBox (which has just released v3). I use it on physical
OSX, Linux and WinXP machines to provide multiple virtual machines
running different versions of Windows (3.1 through to XP - I don't test
for Vista) and various service pack and browser variations. I also run
(sometimes) virtual Ubuntu servers to be test hosts - wholse networks
inside one closed system ;-)

It's awesome.
