I think more browsers would have the swf plugin installed than the quicktime
plugin one.
I would use flash and provide alteratives that launches a real media
file/player and a widows meadia file/player.

I can't say for sure, but my feeling is that it's all versions.

Yes, I agree. Flash is extremely versatile with handling audio files -
and if you have even just a little experience with Flash, you can
easily export a SWF file with an MP3 embedded.
