in old days, it was

gnome-session-save --logout

from a terminal. This you could add as a panel shortcut button if all other 
approaches fail.

 When gnome3 first came out I was unsuccessful at getting it to work with
x2go.  However, I just tried installing gnome-flashback and gave it another
