I did go into the file/config/font and tried to adjust things somewhat. I got
the fonts to enlarge little bit but for the guy I am trying to help I am not
sure it's enough magnification. The most I was able to get was 17dpi. If I can
get 24 dpi might be better for him. Any thoughts?

That's probably a config file with default settings for xfontsel, not the
executable itself.

Just checking here on this Debian machine, xfontsel is greyed out.
x11-utils is installed
and contains
/etc/X11/app-d

You may need to go into "Synaptic Package Manager" if it does not show
up in "Ubuntu Software Center".
The package that contains "xfontsel" is called *"x11-utils"*.
You install it in the operating system.

It's an old X11 utility. It's on my ubuntu machine and i didn't do
anything special to get it, beyond loading what i needed to build
xastir.
