Jacob, usb adapter normally show up at ttyUSB0. You will need to give it
the full path. /dev/ttyUSB0 for example. I am not 100% certain it Mac
does it the same way but I suspect it is similar.

it wasn't ls /dev/cu, it was ls /dev/cu.* (the .* is part of it).
But, based on your ls /dev output, I'd hazard a guess that you don't
have drivers installed for your USB/RS232
