Yea, so that's showing your grep command was running. If soundmodem
was running there would have been another line.
You'll need to start up Soundmodem separately before starting Xastir.

How do I check if the soundmodem process is running? I just did the apt-get
install soundmodem.
I just installed sound modem because there was some documentation. If there
is documentation on how to set it up, as long as it works, I will get
direwolf.
One of the reasons I ;like soundmodem is beca
Is the soundmodem process running? Xastir won't start it for you. Btw,
though soundmodem still works, it's been abandoned for years. You'll
have much better luck with Direwolf in the long run as it supports
multi-bit error correction and is under active development.

Did the chmod command come back with any errors when you ran it sudo?
The hard fail on the interface means that either something else
already has the port, or that the user/group/permissions on the port
aren't sufficient for you to access it. On my boxes (OpenSuSE) the
chmod 4755 bit works fine,
I am having the interface error when I try to start my interface from the
interface menu:
Device 0 DOWN Serial KISS TNC /dev/soundmodem0
Now I click START
It is still stuck on DOWN, and the terminal outputs:
Interface Error! Error opening interface 0 Hard Fail
I attempted the command:
sudo
