I need a little help.
After reading the recent Linux Journal article, I decided it was time to
check out APRS. Xastir was available in the MEPIS repositories, so
Synaptic was used to install it. Getting it up and running was pretty
easy, but the default map it displays is crude at best.

Perhaps the xastir package I installed included Imagemagick, and having the

Hi Folks--
I had some angst when I first tried to get maps to go
with my xastir setup. Here they are installed in
/usr/local/share/xastir/maps/{map subdirs}
and they show up ok in the map chooser window.
Anyways, it turns out that on my setup, if I
first clicked disable all maps in the top level
Curt,
I am very interested in getting this working, and your time is much
appreciated. I have to go take care of some business now and will get
back to this later this evening. If it appears most useful for me to
learn how to compile xastir, my work is cut out for me. I can probably
get some

Rob,
I disagree.to a point. Doing what you describe would add to immense
overhead to the program for little gain.
Problems and endless questions reflect on the quality of the
documentation. A
gazillion configuration options is a good thing but they all must be
documented;

Ian, I think you confused me with James. I don't know enough about

Steve,
This trick didn't produce any different results, but it did help me to
see that the maps stored on my computer are displaying, and when they
overlay, it makes a mess. So a little light bulb went on. A short term
solution for me would be to get a decent map for my area and store it on
Hello All,
I'm very pleased to have recently installed XASTIR on Cygwin here. (I
installed Cygwin for the purpose of running XASTIR. I went the Cygwin
route because I'm considering dabbling with other Linux apps on Cygwin.)
However I've run into a vexing problem: suddenly if I

Curt,
As I do run Mepis I am making up a step by step list of how to do a full

the end. It will be fairly basic (No Gdal orGpsman or Ax25). I should
have it tomorrow and will send it on to you so you can put it where
Rob,
How recently did you install and which set of installation directions
did you use? If you had an installation previous to the recent
upgrade in Cygwin, I've found that doing that upgrade isn't worth it.
Kill the Cygwin directory (or at least everything but the Home sub

Hi Curt and David, and thank you for venturing to answer my question.

think that the problem is with the installation.
